This data collection provides detailed tabulations of 100-percent data items from the 1990 Census of Population and Housing. These tabulations are presented for states, counties, places with 1,000 or more persons, county subdivisions with 1,000 or more persons (selected states), county subdivisions with fewer than 1,000 persons in Metropolitan Statistical Areas/Consolidated MSAs (MSAs/CMSAs) (selected states), and state and county portions of Native American and Alaskan Native areas. Population items include age, race, sex, marital status, Hispanic origin, household type, and household relationship. Housing items include occupancy/vacancy status, tenure, units in structure, contract rent, meals included in rent, value, and number of rooms in housing unit. Crosstabulations include variables such as single year of age by sex, tenure by age of householder, age by group quarters, aggregate value by units in structure, and tenure by number of nonrelatives. The dataset contains both "A" and "B" records. "A" records are provided for each summary level in a geographic area, and are repeated for each geographic component. "B" records repeat the same data for each summary level/geographic component combination, but are tabulated for each of 34 categories of race and Hispanic origin.

Summary Tape File 4B contains sample data weighted to represent the total United States population. The collection also contains 100-percent counts and unweighted sample counts for total persons and total housing units. Additional population and housing variables include items such as age, ancestry, disability, citizenship, education, income, marital status, race, sex, travel time to work, hours worked, rent, persons in household, acreage of property, tenure, value of housing unit, number of vehicles, and monthly owner costs. Data are provided for states (and the District of Columbia) and their county subareas. Within STF 4B, data for each state are represented in one "A" record file and 49 "B" record files. The "A" records contain 123 population tables and 80 housing tables. These include five population tables and one housing table showing 37 categories of race and five population tables and one housing table with 26 categories of Hispanic origin. Data are included for all persons for each summary level and geographic component level within a unit of geography. More detailed data are presented in 178 population and 85 housing tables in the "B" records. The "B" records include a separate file for all persons and up to 48 separate race and Hispanic-origin files.

The 1990 census used a single long-form questionnaire completed by one-half of persons in places with a population under 2,500, one-sixth of persons in other tracts and block numbering areas with fewer than 2,000 housing units, and one-eighth of all other areas. Overall, about one-sixth of housing units completed a long form.

This data set represents 1990 population density by block group as a 100-m grid using data from the 1990 Census of Population and Housing (Public Law 94-171 redistricting data). Grid cell values represent population density in people per square kilometer multiplied by 10 so that the data could be stored as integer.

The MARS file contains modified race and age data based on the 1990 Census. Both race and age are tabulated by sex and Hispanic origin for several layers of geography. The race data were modified to make reporting categories comparable to those used by state and local agencies. The 1990 Census included 9,804,847 persons who checked the "other race" category and were therefore not included in one of the 15 racial categories listed on the Census form. "Other race" is usually not an acceptable reporting category for state and local agencies. Therefore, the Census Bureau assigned each "other race" person to the specified race reported by another person geographically close with an identical response to the Hispanic-origin question. Hispanic origin was taken into account because over 95 percent of the "other race" persons were of Hispanic origin. (Hispanic-origin persons may be of any race.) The assignment of race to Hispanic-origin persons did not affect the Hispanic-origin category that they checked (i.e, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, etc.). Age data were modified because respondents tended to report age as of the date they completed the 1990 questionnaire, instead of age as of the April 1, 1990 Census date. In addition, there may have been a tendency for respondents to round up their age if they were close to having a birthday. Age data for individuals in households were modified by adjusting the reported birth-year data by race and sex for each of the 1990 Census's 449 district offices to correspond with the national level quarterly distribution of births available from the National Center for Health Statistics. The data for persons in group quarters were adjusted similarly, but on a state basis. The age adjustment affects approximately 100 million people. In this file their adjusted age is one year different from that reported in the 1990 Census.

The Census Bureau has created a special subset file from the 1990 Census of Population and Housing data designed to meet the needs of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and affirmative action planning. It contains detailed 1990 Census data dealing with occupation and educational attainment for the civilian labor force, various racial groups, and the Hispanic population. The file consists of four tabulations of the United States civilian labor force. They present EEO data similar to those in the CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1990 [UNITED STATES]: EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY (EEO) FILE (ICPSR 9929), but are expanded to include occupation data by education level, industry group, and earnings. Total population and unemployment data are also available. They are referred to as Tables P1-P4. Table P1 lists occupation by education by sex by race and Hispanic origin. Table P2 lists occupation by earnings by sex by race and Hispanic origin. Table P3 lists occupation by industry by sex by race and Hispanic origin. Table P4 lists population and unemployment by sex by race and Hispanic origin. The collection includes four United States files and 51 separate files, one for each state and Washington, DC. Each state file contains statistics for the state, each county, Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSAs), and places with a population of 50,000 or more.

Abstract (en): This data collection contains FIPS codes for state, county, county subdivision, and place, along with the 1990 Census tract number for each side of the street for the urban cores of 550 counties in the United States. Street names, including prefix and/or suffix direction (north, southeast, etc.) and street type (avenue, lane, etc.) are provided, as well as the address range for that portion of the street located within a particular Census tract and the corresponding Census tract number. The FIPS county subdivision and place codes can be used to determine the correct Census tract number when streets with identical names and ranges exist in different parts of the same county. Contiguous block segments that have consecutive address ranges along a street and that have the same geographic codes (state, county, Census tract, county subdivision, and place) have been collapsed together and are represented by a single record with a single address range. 2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 551 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads. (1) Due to the number of files in this collection, parts have been eliminated here. For a complete list of individual part names designated by state and county, consult the ICPSR Website. (2) There are two types of records in this collection, distinguished by the first character of each record. A "0" indicates a street name/address range record that can be used to find the Census tract number and other geographic codes from a street name and address number. A "2" indicates a geographic code/name record that can be used to find the name of the state, county, county subdivision, and/or place from the FIPS code. The "0" records contain 18 variables and the "2" records contain 10 variables.

This CD consists of the TIGER/Line Census Files, 1990. The type of File is geographic. The 1990 Census TIGER/Line file is an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the Census Bureau's TIGER data base. The Census Bureau is releasing the 1990 Census TIGER/Line files to provide data users with the final 1990 census boundaries (including voting districts) and to support the 1990 Census Data Products Program. The 1990 Census TIGER/Line file provides digital data for all 1 990 census map features and boundaries, the associated 1990 census final tabulation geographic area codes (such as 1990 census block numbers), and the codes for the January 1, 1990 legal and statistical areas on both sides of each line segment of every mapped feature. This is a point coverage of the 1990 Census of Population and Housing for the conterminous United States. (Alaska and Hawaii are available separately). The coverage contains the location of population points retrieved at the block group summary level and shows the total number of persons and housing units enumerated in the "100 percent processing" component of the decennial census. The data was extracted from CD-ROMs containing Public Law 94-171 counts. These are counts that States use in redistricting.

This extraction of data from the 1990 decennial Census files (CENSUS OF POPULATION AND HOUSING, 1990 UNITED STATES: SUMMARY TAPE FILES 3A AND 3B (ICPSR 9694, 9693)) was designed to provide a set of contextual variables to be matched to any survey dataset that has been coded for the geographic location of respondents. Over 120 variables were selected from original Census sources, and more than 100 variables were derived from those component variables. The variables characterize geographic areas in terms of ethnicity, family structures, income, education, labor force activity, and housing. The geographic areas chosen range from neighborhoods (tracts, Block Numbering Areas (BNAs), and Enumeration Districts (EDs)), through intermediate levels of geography (Minor Civil Divisions and Census County Divisions (MCDs/CCDs), census places, and ZIP codes), through large economic areas (counties, Metropolitan Statistical Areas, State Economic Areas (SEAs), and specially created Labor Market Areas (LMAs)), and beyond to large regions (Economic Sub-Regions (ESRs) and states). To the maximum extent possible, the investigator selected Census variables that seemed relevant to problems associated with poverty and income determination and that were present in comparable form in the 1970 and 1980 Census datasets. The U.S. Census Grids (Summary File 3), 1990 data set contains grids of demographic and socioeconomic data from the year 1990 U.S. census in ASCII and GeoTIFF formats. The grids have a resolution of 30 arc-seconds (0.0083 decimal degrees), or approximately 1 square km. The gridded variables are based on census block geography from Census 1990 TIGER/Line Files and census variables (population, households, and housing variables). This data set is produced by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).

Abstract (en): The Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) 1-Percent Sample contains household and person records for a sample of housing units that received the "long form" of the 1990 Census questionnaire. Data items include the full range of population and housing information collected in the 1990 Census, including 500 occupation categories, age by single years up to 90, and wages in dollars up to $140,000. Each person identified in the sample has an associated household record, containing information on household characteristics such as type of household and family income. In addition, the following files have been added to the collection: Ancestry Code List, Place of Birth Code List, Industry Code List, Language Code List, Occupation Code List, and Race Code List (Parts 86-91). Also, the codebook is now available as a PDF file. (1) Although all records are 231 characters in length, each file is hierarchical in structure, containing a housing unit record followed by a variable number of person records. Both record types contain approximately 120 variables. Two improvements over the 1980 PUMS files have been incorporated. First, the housing unit serial number is identified on both the housing unit record and on the person record, allowing the file to be processed as a rectangular file. In addition, each person record is assigned an individual weight, allowing users to more closely approximate published reports. Unlike previous years, the 1990 PUMS 1-Percent and 5-Percent Samples have not been released in separate geographic series (known as "A," "B," etc. records). Instead, each sample has its own set of geographies, known as "Public Use Microdata Areas" (PUMAs), established by the Census Bureau with assistance from each State Data Center. The PUMAs in the 1-Percent Sample are based on a distinction between metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. Metropolitan areas encompass whole central cities, Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (PMSAs), Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), or groups thereof, except where the city or metropolitan area contains more than 200,000 inhabitants. In that case, the city or metropolitan area is divided into several PUMAs. Nonmetropolitan PUMAs are based on areas or groups of areas outside the central city, PMSA, or MSA. PUMAs in this 1-Percent Sample may cross state lines. (2) The codebook is provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet.

This documentation has been created by ICPSR for the restricted version of Census 1990 distributed by the Bureau of the Census. The restricted data is based on questions from the long form questionnaire, and was collected from one in six households in the United States. Topics covered include income, ancestry, citizenship status, home values, commute time to work, occupation, education, veteran status, language ability, migration, place of birth, and many others. The documentation available here provides files summaries, variable information, and facilitates sorting of the data by race or by a wide variety of geographical units.
