    In 2024, the majority of American consumers drink coffee every day. About 73 percent of consumers report drinking coffee daily, while only 3.8 percent report drinking coffee just once a week. Additionally, 16.1 percent of consumers drink coffee a few times a week. The coffee market in the U.S. Domestic coffee consumption in the United States amounts to over 26.3 million 60-kilogram bags. There has been a steady increase in coffee consumption over the last decade. Many Americans buy their coffee at a coffee shop and café chain store. The vast majority of coffee shops and café chains in the U.S. are owned by either Starbucks or Dunkin'. There are 16,466 Starbucks stores in the U.S., compared to 9,580 Dunkin' stores. The next largest café chain, Dutch Bros Coffee, operates fewer than 1,000 locations. In terms of sales of coffee through supermarkets, drug stores, gas stations, and convenience stores, the leading single-cup coffee brand in the U.S. is Keurig Green Mountain, with a market share of about 23.3 percent. JM Smucker’s Dunkin' brand has a market share of approximately 18.6 percent. Coffee consumption by generation in the U.S. There are notable differences in coffee preferences among various generations. While Starbucks is the favorite coffee brand among Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z consumers, Baby boomers tend to prefer Dunkin'.     For the 52 weeks ended April 20, 2025, private label was the first ranked single-cup coffee brand in the United States, capturing 21 percent of the market. It was ahead of Keurig, with a share of 20 percent. Single-cup coffee industry In 2020, 40 percent of consumers in the United States owned a single-cup coffee brewing system. Coffee shop chains such as Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts have started to produce their own single-cup coffee capsules to compete with Keurig and private label brands. Single-cup coffee generated retail sales of up to 3.88 billion U.S. dollars in the United States in 2017. Starbucks and Folgers have a single-cup coffee penetration rate of 31.6 and 26.3 percent, respectively, in American households. Founded in 1981, Keurig Green Mountain has over 400 different varieties of coffee and other beverages. The brand sells coffee beans and ground coffee in bags and fractional packs, most notably in Keurig K-Cup single-serve pods. In 2015, the brand sold its single-serve cup packs at an average price of 0.33 U.S. dollars.

The brand seems to America’s overall favorite, as it also leads the decaffeinated ground coffee category with ***million dollars in sales. Brand history Folgers originally began as J.A. Folger & Co, a company founded in 1872 when James Folger bought out his partner in the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills. After decades of successful family ownership, the company was acquired by Procter & Gamble in 1963 and then again by The J.M. Smucker Company in 2008. Ground coffee dominanceGround coffee, the category where Folgers is king, represents the biggest retail coffee market in the United States, worth over **billion dollars. Within this category, Folgers controls just over a quarter of the market. A recent survey confirms the sales figures, with nearly ** percent of respondents stating that they used Folgers brand coffee in their homes.
