    Description

Summary File 4 (SF 4) from the United States 2000 Census contains the sample data, which is the information compiled from the questions asked of a sample of all people and housing units. Population items include basic population totals: urban and rural, households and families, marital status, grandparents as caregivers, language and ability to speak English, ancestry, place of birth, citizenship status, year of entry, migration, place of work, journey to work (commuting), school enrollment and educational attainment, veteran status, disability, employment status, industry, occupation, class of worker, income, and poverty status. Housing items include basic housing totals: urban and rural, number of rooms, number of bedrooms, year moved into unit, household size and occupants per room, units in structure, year structure built, heating fuel, telephone service, plumbing and kitchen facilities, vehicles available, value of home, monthly rent, and shelter costs. In Summary File 4, the sample data are presented in 213 population tables (matrices) and 110 housing tables, identified with "PCT" and "HCT" respectively. Each table is iterated for 336 population groups: the total population, 132 race groups, 78 American Indian and Alaska Native tribe categories (reflecting 39 individual tribes), 39 Hispanic or Latino groups, and 86 ancestry groups. The presentation of SF4 tables for any of the 336 population groups is subject to a population threshold. That is, if there are fewer than 100 people (100-percent count) in a specific population group in a specific geographic area, and there are fewer than 50 unweighted cases, their population and housing characteristics data are not available for that geographic area in SF4. For the ancestry iterations, only the 50 unweighted cases test can be performed. See Appendix H: Characteristic Iterations, for a complete list of characteristic iterations.

    Description

During America's colonial period, the trans-Appalachian west, though largely terra incognita to people living on the eastern seaboard and occupied by significant numbers of native peoples, lay open to initial forays by hunters, explorers, surveyors, and settlers. The earliest overland travel routes to traverse western Virginia lands, country that eventually became the Commonwealth of Kentucky, were established between the 1750s and 1780. The primary trails that provided access for emigrants moving into Kentucky and the Northwest Territory's Ohio Valley have been of long-standing historic importance. They include the southeastern gateway where concurrent gaps truncate Cumberland and Pine Mountain; the Indians' Warrior's Path (partially adopted by white pioneers) to the great Bluegrass Shawnee town at Eskippakithiki ; Daniel Boone's Trace to Fort Boonesborough; and the Wilderness Road to Fort Harrod (Harrodsburg) and the Falls of the Ohio at Louisville. In 1800, Kentucky's population had reached some 220,000. A large proportion of these individuals-or their ancestors-white and black, free and slave, moved into the state via one or more of these three originary routes (Speed, 1886 [1971], p. 7) Pioneer roads-including the highly publicized and much romanticized trans-west trails to Santa Fe and Oregon-were avenues of migration to developing western frontiers and thus are iconic linear places around which historical fact and contemporary fiction coalesce. Such first generation roads have been associated with the American version of the frontier myth wherein a hero investigates the unknown pristine wilderness, asserts control over it, and appropriates its resources from small groups of savages. Settlers follow the hero's original route and arrogate the new lands (Stoeltje, 1987, p. 239). Given their primacy, some roads, with the passage of time, became stimuli to notions of collective heritage and romanticized concepts of frontier life that are often associated with stalwart frontier folk-Daniel Boone being foremost among them. In Kentucky, contemporary residents depict their heritage in "reenactments," shrines, roadside historic site markers, historic preservation priorities, and state and national historic sites and parks. The state's historical society has erected some 35 roadside markers commemorating pioneer roads, and the state's road-related parks include Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, and Levi Jackson, Fort Boonesborough, and Old Fort Harrod state parks. Our principle objective was to map at the largest practicable scale Kentucky's three primary eighteenth-century frontier trails-the Warrior's Path, Boone's Trace, and the Wilderness Road-and the sites associated with pioneer settlement linked by these roads. We wished to consolidate information from those historical sources that permitted plotting locations accurately. Eighteenth-century explorers' maps and reports, surveyors' notes, travelers' diaries, and other information sources about the western frontier were often locationally incomplete, imprecise, or distorted by present standards. Information from such sources may be adequate to suggest highly generalized route alignments but of limited value for drafting contemporary large scale trail maps. While acknowledging the idiosyncrasies inherent in historical records, we sought to glean from them precise point and route locations and, where warranted and possible, aggregate those locations into an accurate base map. We wished to do this consistently and unambiguously because subtle distinctions in the exact location of historic routes and related settlement sites can affect the nature of the questions one is prompted to pose and the reliability of the conclusions that one can draw about pioneer knowledge, preferences, and behaviors (Elliott and Talbert, 2002, pp. 145-162). A full bibliography is listed on the companion Kentucky Frontier Trails poster, or available upon request.Metadata and a download link for the map product (314mb PDF) can be found on the Kentucky Geoportal.Copies of the printed map product can be obtained by contacting Jeff Levy at the University of Kentucky, Department of Geography: jeff.levy@uky.edu, (859) 323-0618

    Description

Several years ago, the Eastern Kentucky University Herbarium (EKY) merged with the Berea College Ralph L. Thompson Herbarium (BEREA) to form a unified collection at Eastern Kentucky University. Both collections are maintained separately in the same physical facilities. As of late 2021, the combined accessioned herbarium collection exceeded 110,000 specimens, and was actively growing. Almost all of the holdings are of vascular plants. This herbarium is by far the largest, most diverse and most active in Kentucky. Significant collections from many people and sources are included in EKY; most of the collections in BEREA are of Ralph Thompson. Significant strengths include Kentucky plants, woody taxa, the Southern Appalachians and Kentucky’s Red River Gorge, though there are significant holdings from a much wider area.

The Karst Occurrence GIS polygon coverages for Kentucky were compiled from a digital version of the 1:500:000-scale geologic map of Kentucky (Noger, M.C., 1988). Because of the 1:500,000 scale of the source map, these coverages should NOT be used for evaluating karst geologic hazards or hydrogeology at scales larger than 1:500,000. The classification of the potential for karst development was based on the field experience of the authors and other data. A number of isolated carbonate units were newly digitized for these coverages. For more information about Karst Topography in Kentucky, please visit https://www.uky.edu/KGS/karst/For more information about these coverages, please contact Randall L. Paylor or James C. Currens at the Kentucky Geological Survey, 228 Mining and Minerals Building, University of Kentucky, 40506-0107. (859)257-5500.Sinkhole Data:These data represent digital GIS sinkhole coverage for all of Kentucky. The highest elevation, closed, topographic contour of each mapped sinkhole was digitized as a GIS polygon. The second highest elevation contour was also digitized where very large, shallow, karst valleys were so expansive that the area covered by the polygon obscured patterns in sinkhole distribution. These karst valleys are mostly confined to the Western Pennyroyal. The spacing of contour intervals on the topographic maps of the state vary in from 40 foot to 10 foot. No attempt was made to use a constant elevation, standardize the outline to a uniform contour interval, or record the elevation of the digitized contour. Digitization was done onscreen using digital raster graphic files of the 7 ½ minute topographic contours, registered and projected to the Kentucky State Plane coordinate system.

    Description

The resolution offered by genomic data sets coupled with recently developed spatially informed analyses are allowing researchers to quantify population structure at increasingly fine temporal and spatial scales. However, both empirical research and conservation measures have been limited by questions regarding the impacts of data set size, data quality thresholds, and the time scale at which barriers to gene flow become detectable. Here, we used restriction site associated DNA sequencing to generate a 2,140 SNP data set for the copperhead snake (Agkistrodon contortrix) and address the population genomic impacts of recent and widespread landscape modification across an approximately 1000 km2 region of eastern Kentucky, USA. Nonspatial population-based assignment and clustering methods supported little to no population structure. However, using individual-based spatial autocorrelation approaches we found evidence for genetic structuring which closely follows the path of a historically important highway which experienced high traffic volumes from ca. 1920 to 1970 before losing most traffic to a newly constructed alternate route. We found no similar spatial genomic signatures associated with more recently constructed highways or surface mining activity, though a time lag effect may be responsible for the lack of any emergent spatial genetic patterns. Subsampling of our SNP data set suggested that similar results could be obtained with as few as 250 SNPs, and a range of thresholds for missing data exhibited limited impacts on the spatial patterns we detected. While we were not able to estimate relative effects of land uses or precise time lags, our findings highlight the importance of temporal factors in landscape genetics approaches, and suggest the potential advantages of genomic data sets and fine-scale, spatially informed approaches for quantifying subtle genetic patterns in temporally complex landscapes.

    Description

One-minute Carter Coordinate Grid. The Carter coordinate system is a grid, based on latitude and longitude, used to locate oil and gas wells in Kentucky. The system was developed by the Carter Oil Company to mimic the township and range location system in areas that had not been surveyed. The State is divided into a regular grid with each cell (or quad) being five minutes of latitude by five minutes of longitude. These quads are assigned letters (equivalent of the township) beginning with A in the south and increasing through Z and AA to GG northward. The quads are assigned numbers (equivalent of the range) beginning with zero (0) in the west and increasing to 92 in the east. Each five-minute by five-minute quad is further subdivided into 25 one-minute by one-minute sections. Within the one-minute section, the location is pinpointed by specifying the distance from an adacent pair of one-minute section boundaries to the well. The Carter coordinate is written by specifying a pair of footages from the one-minute section boundaries and the reference boundary (north, south, east, or west) for each, the one-minute section number, the five-minutes quad letter, and the five-minute quad number. A Carter coordinate and topographic index map of Kentucky is available from Publication Sales at the Kentucky Geological Survey.Data Download: https://kgs.uky.edu/kgsweb/download/state/CARTER1.ZIP
