The American Community Survey (ACS) is an ongoing statistical survey that samples a small percentage of the population every year -- giving communities the information they need to plan investments and services. The 5-year public use microdata sample (PUMS) for 2012-2016 is a subset of the 2012-2012 ACS sample. It contains the same sample as the combined PUMS 1-year files for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. This data collection provides a person-level subset of 133,781 respondents whose occupations were coded as arts-related in the 2011-2015 ACS PUMS. The 2012-2016 PUMS is the seventh 5-year file published by the ACS. This data collection contains five years of data for the population from households and the group quarters (GQ) population. The GQ population and population from households are all weighted to agree with the ACS counts which are an average over the five year period (2012-2016). The ACS sample was selected from all counties across the nation. The ACS provides social, housing, and economic characteristics for demographic groups covering a broad spectrum of geographic areas in the United States. A peer reviewed paper published in Economic Geography, Vol 46. The paper describes the process of developing a holistic model for urban planning in Detroit. In one classification of models the simulation to be described would be considered a demographic model whose primary objectives are instructional. The model developed here may be used for forecasting, but was not constructed for this specific purpose, and it is a demographic model since it describes only population growth, with particular emphasis on the geographical distribution of this growth.

Abstract (en): This study contains teaching materials developed over a period of years for a four-week workshop, Longitudinal Analysis of Historical Demographic Data (LAHDD), offered through the ICPSR Summer Program in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013, with one-day alumni workshops in 2010, 2012, and 2014. Instructors in the workshops are listed below. Funding was provided by The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, grants R25-HD040525 and R25-HD-049479, the ICPSR Summer Program and the ICPSR Director. The course was designed to teach students the theories, methods, and practices of historical demography and to give them first-hand experience working with historical data. This training is valuable not only to those interested in the analysis historical data. The techniques of historical demography rest on methodological insights that can be applied to many problems in population studies and other social sciences. While historical demography remains a flourishing research area with publications in key journals like Demography, Population Studies, and Population, practitioners were dispersed, and training was not available at any of the population research centers in the U.S. or elsewhere. One hundred and ten participants from around the globe took part in the workshops, and have gone on to establish courses of their own or teach in other workshops. We offer these materials here in the hopes that others will find them useful in developing courses on historical demography and/or longitudinal data analysis. The workshop was organized in three tracks: A brief tour of historical demography, event-history analysis, and data management for longitudinal data using Stata and Microsoft Access. The data management track includes 13 exercises designed for hands-on learning and reinforcement. Included in this project are the syllabii and reading lists for the three tracks, datasets used in the exercises, documents setting out each exercise, a file with the expected results, and for many of the exercises, an explanation. A computerized data set of demographic, economic and social data for 227 countries of the world. Information presented includes population, health, nutrition, mortality, fertility, family planning and contraceptive use, literacy, housing, and economic activity data. Tabular data are broken down by such variables as age, sex, and urban/rural residence. Data are organized as a series of statistical tables identified by country and table number. Each record consists of the data values associated with a single row of a given table. There are 105 tables with data for 208 countries. The second file is a note file, containing text of notes associated with various tables. These notes provide information such as definitions of categories (i.e. urban/rural) and how various values were calculated. The IDB was created in the U.S. Census Bureau''s International Programs Center (IPC) to help IPC staff meet the needs of organizations that sponsor IPC research. The IDB provides quick access to specialized information, with emphasis on demographic measures, for individual countries or groups of countries. The IDB combines data from country sources (typically censuses and surveys) with IPC estimates and projections to provide information dating back as far as 1950 and as far ahead as 2050. Because the IDB is maintained as a research tool for IPC sponsor requirements, the amount of information available may vary by country. As funding and research activity permit, the IPC updates and expands the data base content. Pleistocene climate cycles are well known to have shaped contemporary species distributions and genetic diversity. Northward range expansions in response to deglaciation following the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; ~21,000 years ago) have been surmised to lead to population size expansions in terrestrial taxa and changes in seasonal migratory behaviour. Recent findings, however, suggest that some northern temperate populations may have been more stable than expected through the LGM. We modelled the demographic history of twenty co-distributed boreal-breeding bird species of North America from full mitochondrial gene sets and species-specific molecular rates. We used these demographic reconstructions to test how species with different migratory strategies were affected by glacial cycles. Our results suggest that effective population sizes increased in response to deglaciation during the middle Wisconsin period (~45,000 years ago) whereas genetic diversity was maintained throughout the LGM despite shifts in geographic range. We conclude that earlier glacial cycles prior to the LGM have most strongly shaped contemporary genetic diversity in these high-latitude species. We did not find differences in historic population dynamics between species differing in migratory behaviour, contributing to growing evidence that major switches in migratory strategy during the Last Glacial Maximum are unnecessary to explain contemporary migratory patterns.
This survey provides data on labor force activity for the week prior to the survey. Comprehensive data are available on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 15 years old and over. Personal characteristics such as age, sex, race, marital status, veteran status, household relationships, educational background, and Hispanic origin are also provided. Questions unique to this supplement pertain to citizenship, voting status, and registration status and were asked of respondents aged 18 or older. Data on telephone availability are also included.
A panel data set for use in cross-cultural analyses of aging, health, and well-being between the U.S. and Japan. The questionnaires were designed to be partially comparable to many surveys of the aged, including Americans'' Changing Lives; 1984 National Health Interview Survey Supplement on Aging; Health and Retirement Study (HRS), and Well-Being Among the Aged: Personal Control and Self-Esteem (WBA). NSJE questionnaire topics include: * Demographics (age, sex, marital status, education, employment) * Social Integration (interpersonal contacts, social supports) * Health Limitations on daily life and activities * Health Conditions * Health Status (ratings of present health) * Level of physical activity * Subjective Well-Being and Mental Health Status (life satisfaction, morale), * Psychological Indicators (life events, locus of control, self-esteem) * Financial situation (financial status) * Memory (measures of cognitive functioning) * Interviewer observations (assessments of respondents) The NSJE was based on a national sample of 2,200 noninstitutionalized elderly aged 60+ in Japan. This cohort has been interviewed once every 3 years since 1987. To ensure that the data are representative of the 60+ population, the samples in 1990 and 1996 were refreshed to add individuals aged 60-62. In 1999, a new cohort of Japanese adults aged 70+ was added to the surviving members of previous cohorts to form a database of 3,990 respondents 63+, of which some 3,000 were 70+. Currently a 6-wave longitudinal database (1987, 1990, 1993, 1996, 1999, & 2002) is in place; wave 7 began in 2006. Detecting recent demographic changes is a crucial component of species conservation and management, as many natural populations face declines due to anthropogenic habitat alteration and climate change. Genetic methods allow researchers to detect changes in effective population size (Ne) from sampling at a single timepoint. However, in species with long lifespans, there is a lag between the start of a decline in a population and the resulting decrease in genetic diversity. This lag slows the rate at which diversity is lost, and therefore makes it difficult to detect recent declines using genetic data. However, the genomes of old individuals can provide a window into the past, and can be compared to those of younger individuals, a contrast that may help reveal recent demographic declines. To test whether comparing the genomes of young and old individuals can help infer recent demographic bottlenecks, we use forward-time, individual-based simulations with varying mean individual lifespans and extents of generational overlap. We find that age information can be used to aid in the detection of demographic declines when the decline has been severe. When average lifespan is long, comparing young and old individuals from a single timepoint has greater power to detect a recent (within the last 50 years) bottleneck event than comparing individuals sampled at different points in time. Our results demonstrate how longevity and generational overlap can be both a hindrance and a boon to detecting recent demographic declines from population genomic data. Methods All data for this publication were generated via evolutionary simulations in SLiM. Here, we archive all scripts necesarily to generate, analyze, and visualize the results presented in Clark et al. 2024. First, we performed simulations in SLiM using a perennial and annual model for a variety of average lifespans (for the perennial model), and bottleneck severities. The output of these simulations is (1) a .tree file contain the geneological history of the population, from which we will extract information about genetic diversity, (2) individual-based metadata for all individuls alive during the simulation sampling time: the generation number, individual pedigree id and the individual's age, (3) Census population size information about the population at each generation in the sampling period. Second, we used tskit, msprime, and pyslim to load and process .tree files as tree sequences. We then loop through focal sampling points in the tree sequence, and sampling individuals to perform age and temporal comparisons. Genetic diversity data from the sampled bins is exported as .txt files. Finally, genetic diversity data is loaded in R, permutation tests are performed to test for significant differences in genetic diversity between bins, and figures are created.
A dataset of a longitudinal study of over 3,000 Mexican-Americans aged 65 or over living in five southwestern states. The objective is to describe the physical and mental health of the study group and link them to key social variables (e.g., social support, health behavior, acculturation, migration). To the extent possible, the study was modeled after the existing EPESE studies, especially the Duke EPESE, which included a large sample if African-Americans. Unlike the other EPESE studies that were restricted to small geographic areas, the Hispanic EPESE aimed at obtaining a representative sample of community-dwelling Mexican-American elderly residing in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and California. Approximately 85% of Mexican-American elderly reside in these states and data were obtained that are generalizable to roughly 500,000 older people. The final sample of 3,050 subjects at baseline is comparable to those of the other EPESE studies. Data Availability: Waves I to IV are available through the National Archive of Computerized Data on Aging (NACDA), ICPSR. Also available through NACDA is the ����??Resource Book of the Hispanic Established Populations for the Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly����?? which offers a thorough review of the data and its applications. All subjects aged 75 or older were interviewed for Wave V and 902 new subjects were added. Hemoglobin A1c test kits were provided to subjects who self-reported diabetes. Approximately 270 of the kits were returned for analyses. Wave V data are being validated and reviewed. A tentative timeline for the archiving of Wave V data is November 2006. These data files contain extensive information about the social and political character of the United States, including a breakdown of population by state, race, nationality, number of families, size of the family, births, deaths, marriages, occupation, religion, and general economic conditions. Though not complete over the full time span of this study, statistics are available on such diverse subjects as total numbers of newspapers and periodicals, total capital invested in manufacturing, total numbers of educational institutions, total number of churches, taxation by state, and land surface area in square miles.

This data collection, focusing on the welfare and public support system, contains information from the SURVEY OF INCOME AND EDUCATION, 1976 (ICPSR 7634), conducted during the months of April through July of 1976 by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The survey served as a supplement to the yearly Current Population Survey and was conducted to obtain reliable state-by-state data on the numbers of children in local areas with family incomes below the federal poverty level. The information was used to facilitate Title 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The survey includes questions used in the Current Population Survey and also contains additional exclusive questions covering school enrollment, disability, health insurance, bilingualism, food stamp recipiency, assets, and housing costs. The National Chicano Research Network created this extract by including only those cases for people who received either of the following types of support: food stamps in 1975 or 1976, public housing, government rent subsidy, railroad retirement, United States government SSI, aid to families with dependent children, other public assistance, Medicaid, veteran's assistance, neighborhood health center, free or low-cost clinic, other public source, or any public assistance or welfare the previous month. The 110 variables used from SURVEY OF INCOME AND EDUCATION, 1976: RECTANGULAR FILE (ICPSR 7919) were mostly demographic, income-related, and employment-related variables. The data were provided by the National Chicano Research Network, which was located at the Survey Research Center of the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan.

The Demographic Profile Summary File contains 23 tables derived from the responses to the 2010 Census questionnaire, including tabulations of the population by age and sex, race, and Hispanic or Latino origin; household population by household relationship; group quarters population by sex and group quarters type; households by type; and housing units by occupancy and tenure. The Census Bureau computed the tables for multiple levels of observation (called "summary levels" in the Census Bureau's nomenclature), including, but not limited to, regions, divisions, states, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas, counties, county subdivisions, places, congressional districts, state legislative districts, school districts, American Indian Areas, Alaska Native Areas, Hawaiian Home Lands, ZIP code tabulation areas, and census tracts. Additionally, for some summary areas the tables are iterated for "geographic components," e.g., the urban and rural portions of metropolitan statistical areas and the portions of states inside and outside metropolitan statistical areas. With one variable per table cell and additional variables with geographic information, the Demographic Profile Summary File comprises 106 data files, two per state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the National File. ICPSR supplies this data collection in 54 ZIP archives. There is a separate archive for each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the National File, and an archive with a Microsoft Access database shell and instructions on how to use the shell.

This is an extract of the decennial Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) released by the Bureau of the Census. Because the complete PUMS files contain several hundred thousand records, ICPSR has constructed this subset to allow for easier and less costly analysis. The collection of data at ten year increments allows the user to follow various age cohorts through the life-cycle. Data include information on the household and its occupants such as size and value of dwelling, utility costs, number of people in the household, and their relationship to the respondent. More detailed information was collected on the respondent, the head of household, and the spouse, if present. Variables include education, marital status, occupation and income.

The Profiles of General Demographic Characteristics data are released as individual files for each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, as well as for all 50 states combined (Part 61) and for the entire United States (Part 60). The files contain the 100-percent data, which is the information compiled from questions asked of all people and about every housing unit. The population items include sex, age, race, Hispanic or Latino, household relationship, household type, group quarters population, housing occupancy, and housing tenure. The profiles include a total of 71 population and 25 housing data items.
