    Description

Between January 2019 and February 2022, utilization of container ship capacity became an issue. In January 2019, about 2.9 percent of the global container fleet capacity was unutilized. In February 2022, this figure grew to 11.6 percent, primarily due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the worldwide supply chain. Delays of container ships and trade imbalances were among the main reasons for the low capacity utilization rate in 2021 and 2022.

Schedule reliability of container carriers dropping Amid the pandemic, the schedule reliability of leading container carriers decreased considerably. While in January 2020, 68.5 percent of container ships reached their destination on time, in January 2022, only 34.4 percent arrived on time. Moreover, the time it took for a shipping container to reach its destination increased. Between January 2020 and January 2022, the number of days for a shipping container to be delivered from China to the United States more than doubled, from about 51 to 107 days.

Soaring container freight rates With less capacity available and demand for container shipping not decreasing, container freight rates have reached record-high levels. While throughout 2019, the global container freight rate index oscillated between 1,262 U.S. dollars and 1,720 U.S. dollars, it started to rise steeply at the end of 2020, reaching its peak in September 2021 at 10,361 U.S. dollars.

As of April 30, 2022, the Danish container shipping company APM-Maersk was operating the most container ships in the world. While having 731 container ships in its fleet, APM-Maersk owned only 339 vessels, the rest was chartered. The company's fleet had a total capacity of roughly 4.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units in 2022.

Standardization of the capacity of containers Global seaborne trade was revolutionized in the 1950s, when the intermodal container became ready for commercialization. Prior to the introduction of standard containers, cargo shipping used to be a lot more expensive, as well as time-consuming. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defined the capacity of intermodal containers, making the twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) a standard measure used in the transportation industry. Today, between 80 and 90 percent of containers shipped around the world are either forty or twenty foot standard length containers.

This table contains figures on transported loading weight of domestic (national) and cross-border (international) goods transport (excluding transport via the Netherlands). Figures are available for all transport modes (maritime transport, inland shipping, road transport, rail transport, air transport and pipeline transport). Data available from: 1998 Status of the figures: All figures up to and including 2012 are definitive, except figures on inland navigation for the years 2007-2009. Data on 2013 up to and including 2023 are of a preliminary nature. Since data were compiled based on various statistics, in which there may have been slight adjustments, the figures may show minor deviations from the results published previously. Figures on goods transport on Dutch roads by foreign vehicles are based on Eurostat data. Figures over the 4th quarter of 2020 on foreign road transporters from the United Kingdom have been estimated based on the data over the first three quarters. Figures on maritime transport up to and including 2010 are based on gross-gross weight. As of 2011, this is gross weight, i.e. excluding the tare weight of the transport unit (e.g. containers). As of 3 April 2024 the figures on pipeline transport from 2013 onwards have been adjusted. A new observation and processing method on pipeline transport has started resulting in adjusted figures on cross-border pipeline transport from 2013 to 2022, and data on domestic pipeline transport has been added. For the years 1998 to 2012, international pipeline transport data is based on the old processing method and can only be used as an indication of the transport. On 2 October 2024 the provisional figures for 2023 are added and the figures from 2013 up to 2022 have been revised if aplicable for the seperate transport modes. Changes as of 4 October 2024: The provisional figures on pipeline transport for 2023 have been revised. When will new figures be published? New figures will become available in the third quarter following the end of the previous calendar year.

    Description

The delivery time for shipping containers from China to Europe nearly doubled between January 2020 and January 2022. While it took about 60 days for a shipping container to be delivered from China to Europe in January 2020, due to disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the delivery time increased to 108 days in January 2022. In March 2022, shipping containers from China to Europe took some 116 days.

    Current disruptions in maritime freight

Maritime logistics have been dealing with the negative impacts of the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, China's zero-Covid policy and the following lockdowns in the major port cities worsened the congestion in Chinese ports. From February to April 2022, the number of container vessels waiting outside Chinese ports almost doubled, reaching 260 to 506 ships. Therewithal, Dockworker's strikes for high wages in Northern European Ports deepen existing logistical bottlenecks in ocean freight between China and Europe.

    Soaring freight prices

From January 2019 to February 2022, global container fleet capacity losses were dramatic. Unutilized fleet capacity escalated from 2.8% to 11.6% within two years. Even though carrier companies have been trying to increase the number of containers sent to the ocean, this did not solve the low capacity utilization due to port congestion. The lack of adequate dockers causes the containers to be stuck at the ports, which delays transferring them back to their origin. As a result of a limited number of available containers and duck workers, the cost of shipping containerized freight from China to Europe soared immensely from 1,100 points to 4,700 points between January 2019 to August 2022.

While throughout 2019, the global container freight rate index oscillated between 1,262 U.S. dollars and 1,720 U.S. dollars, it started to rise steeply at the end of 2020, reaching its peak in September 2021 at 10,361 U.S. dollars.
