DDOT's Urban Forestry Division (UFD) is the primary steward of Washington DC's ~200,000 public trees and has a mission of keeping this resource healthy, safe, & growing! Trees in the city are critical to our well-being. Among many other benefits, these trees improve our air and water quality, cool our neighborhoods, and provide critical habitat for birds, bees, and...people, too! To help the public understand and connect with the forest that surrounds them, UFD has created this interactive portal. Scroll down to explore information describing the history, value, and management of the urban forest in Washington, DC.

Rural lands are those areas outside of urban growth areas (UGAs). As the Growth Management Act (GMA) requires a “Rural Element” that includes lands “not designated for urban growth, agriculture, forest, or mineral resources” (RCW 36.70A.070(5)). The GMA requires the county to include a rural element in its comprehensive plan. The county’s rural element consists of the rural land use policies in this subsection of the Land Use chapter as well as other rural-related policies addressing utilities, transportation, housing, open space, parks and recreation, economic development, and natural resources, each discussed in separate sections of the county’s comprehensive plan.

    Description

The Geographic Information System (GIS) industry is experiencing robust growth, projected to maintain a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10.80% from 2025 to 2033. This expansion is driven by increasing adoption across diverse sectors, including agriculture, utilities, mining, construction, transportation, and oil and gas. The rising need for precise location-based data for efficient operations, optimized resource management, and informed decision-making fuels this market growth. Advancements in hardware, such as high-resolution sensors and drones, coupled with sophisticated software capabilities like advanced spatial analytics and cloud-based GIS solutions, are key contributors. Furthermore, the proliferation of location-based services (LBS) and the growing adoption of telematics and navigation systems are expanding the applications of GIS technology. While data security concerns and the need for skilled professionals present some challenges, the overall market outlook remains positive. The segmentation of the GIS market reveals a strong demand across various components (hardware and software) and functionalities (mapping, surveying, telematics and navigation, and location-based services). North America currently holds a significant market share due to early adoption and technological advancements, but regions like Asia are exhibiting rapid growth fueled by infrastructure development and increasing digitalization. Leading companies like Bentley Systems, Esri, Trimble, and Hexagon AB are at the forefront of innovation, continuously developing and implementing advanced GIS solutions to meet the evolving needs of different industries. Description

Unincorporated Urban Growth Areas (UGA) as defined by the Growth Management Act (GMA). The annual update is conducted by collecting UGA polygons directly from each of Washington's 39 counties. As of 2025, there are 27 counties with UGAs.All UGA polygons are normalized against the Department of Revenue's (DOR) "City Boundaries" layer (shared to the Washington Geoportal a.k.a. the GIS Open Data site: geo.wa.gov). The City Boundaries layer was processed into this UGA layer such that any overlapping area of UGA polygons (from authoritative individual counties) was erased. Since DOR polygons and county-sourced UGA polygons do not have perfect topology, many slivers resulted after the erase operation. These are attempted to be irradicated by these processing steps. "Multipart To Singlepart" Esri tool; exploded all polygons to be individualSlivers were mathematically identified using a 4 acre area threshold and a 0.3 "thinness ratio" threshold as described by Esri's "Polygon Sliver" tool. These slivers are merged into the neighboring features using Esri's "Eliminate" tool.Polygons that are less than 5,000 sq. ft. and not part of a DOR city (CITY_NM = Null) were also merged via the "Eliminate" tool. (many very small slivers were manually found yet mathematically did not meet the thinness ratio threshold)The final 8 polygons less than 25 sq. ft. were manually deleted (also slivers but were not lined up against another feature and missed by the "Eliminate" tool runs)Dissolved all features back to multipart using all fieldsAll UGAs polygons remaining are unincorporated areas beyond the city limits. Any polygon with CITY_NM populated originated from the DOR "City Boundaries" layer. The DOR's City Boundaries are updated quarterly by DOR. For the purposes of this UGA layer, the city boundaries was downloaded one time (4/24/2025) and will not be updated quarterly. Therefore, if precise city limits are required by any user of UGA boundaries, please refer to the city boundaries layer and conduct any geoprocessing needed. The DOR's "City Boundaries" layer is available here:https://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=69fcb668dc8d49ea8010b6e33e42a13aData is updated in conjunction with the annual statewide parcel layer update. Latest update completed April 2025.

    Description

The Kalochori Accelerometric Network (KAN) operates since 2014 in the urban area of Kalochori, 7 km west of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece, as part of a multi-sensor monitoring scheme developed during the INDES-MUSA project (http://www.indes-musa.gr/en/). KAN is composed of seven accelerometric stations; three ground stations installed in distinct urban zones (i.e. residential, industrial and tanks zone), three stations on top of a selected structure within each urban zone and one free-field station away from the built environment. All the stations are documented with installation and operating features, available characteristics of the housing structures and geotechnical data at the stations sites. The data linked to this DOI refer to seventy eight (78) earthquakes that have been recorded by KAN between 01/16/2014 and 12/31/2016. More specifically, the uploaded dataset includes KAN stations monographs, filtered and unfiltered acceleration recordings and metadata of the recorded earthquakes. An online demonstration of the Kalochori Accelerometric Network and dissemination of the above data is provided through the INDES-MUSA Web-GIS platform http://apollo.itsak.gr/apollo-portal/ApolloPro.aspx.

The Urban Area Boundary Files portray the urban area boundaries for which census data are disseminated. They are available for download in two types: cartographic and digital. Cartographic boundary files depict the geographic areas using only the shorelines of the major land mass of Canada and its coastal islands. Digital boundary files depict the full extent of the geographic areas, including the coastal water area. The files provide a framework for mapping and spatial analysis using commercially available geographic information systems (GIS) or other mapping software.

    Description

The Census Bureau released revised delineations for urban areas on December 29, 2022. The new criteria (contained in this Federal Register Notice) is based primarily on housing unit density measured at the census block level. The minimum qualifying threshold for inclusion as an urban area is an area that contains at least 2,000 housing units or has a population of at least 5,000 persons. It also eliminates the classification of areas as “urban clusters/urbanized areas”. This represents a change from 2010, where urban areas were defined as areas consisting of 50,000 people or more and urban clusters consisted of at least 2,500 people but less than 50,000 people with at least 1,500 people living outside of group quarters. Due to the new population thresholds for urban areas, 36 urban clusters in California are no longer considered urban areas, leaving California with 193 urban areas after the new criteria was implemented.

The State of California experienced an increase of 1,885,884 in the total urban population, or 5.3%. However, the total urban area population as a percentage of the California total population went down from 95% to 94.2%. For more information about the mapped data, download the Excel spreadsheet here.

Please note that some of the 2020 urban areas have different names or additional place names as a result of the inclusion of housing unit counts as secondary naming criteria.

Please note there are four urban areas that cross state boundaries in Arizona and Nevada. For 2010, only the parts within California are displayed on the map; however, the population and housing estimates represent the entirety of the urban areas. For 2020, the population and housing unit estimates pertains to the areas within California only.

Data for this web application was derived from the 2010 and 2020 Censuses (2010 and 2020 Census Blocks, 2020 Urban Areas, and Counties) and the 2016-2020 American Community Survey (2010 -Urban Areas) and can be found at data.census.gov.
