Explore the capital cities around the world and the U.S. capital city collection, as captured from the International Space Station. This collection contains thousands of images of capital cities worldwide, with a separate option of viewing United States state capitals. Extreme variation in the sizes of capital cities has resulted in different lenses being needed to capture cities and some of the surrounding countryside. Detailed images showing smaller parts of many larger, well-known cities can be searched for separately, using the name of the city.
USGS Structures from The National Map consists of data to include the name, function, location, and other core information and characteristics of selected manmade facilities. The types of structures collected are largely determined by the needs of disaster planning and emergency response, and homeland security organizations. Structures currently being collected are: School, Technical/Trade School, College/University, Fire Station/EMS Station, Law Enforcement/Police Station, Prison/Correctional Facility, State Capitol, Hospital/Medical Center, Ambulance Service, Cemetery, Post Office, Campground, Trailhead, and Visitor/Information Center. Structures data are designed to be used in general mapping and in the analysis of structure related activities using geographic information system technology. The National Map structures data is commonly combined with other data themes, such as boundaries, elevation, hydrography, and transportation, to produce general reference base maps. The National Map download client allows free downloads of public domain structures data in either Esri File Geodatabase or Shapefile formats. For additional information on the structures data model, go to https://www.usgs.gov/core-science-systems/ngp/tnm-corps/structures. See https://apps.nationalmap.gov/help/ for assistance with The National Map viewer, download client, services, or metadata. Data Refreshed January, 2025
The city base map provided as OGC Web Map Service is created automatically from the contents of the Official Property Register Information System (ALKIS) and the overview maps maintained in the City Measurement Office. This card is updated every 2-3 months. The card is available for scales 1:500 to 1:400,000. This WMS is available in versions 1.1.1 and 1.3.0.
This point shapefile contains the locations of state capitals in Brazil in 1900. These data were created using a custom World Polyconic Projection. This layer is part of the Evolução da divisão territorial do Brasil 1872 - 2010 dataset, a collection of data representing the evolution of Brazilian states, municipalities and cities. This dataset is intended for researchers, students, and policy makers for reference and mapping purposes, and may be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analysis with other spatial data.Read More

The "Major Cities" layer is derived from the "World Cities" dataset provided by ArcGIS Data and Maps group as part of the global data layers made available for public use. "Major cities" layer specifically contains National and Provincial capitals that have the highest population within their respective country. Cities were filtered based on the STATUS (“National capital”, “National and provincial capital”, “Provincial capital”, “National capital and provincial capital enclave”, and “Other”). Majority of these cities within larger countries have been filtered at the highest levels of POP_CLASS (“5,000,000 and greater” and “1,000,000 to 4,999,999”). However, China for example, was filtered with cities over 11 million people due to many highly populated cities. Population approximations are sourced from US Census and UN Data. The U.S. cross-border securities portfolio is used as a case study to document the extent of distortions in traditional residence-based portfolio statistics. With cross-border holdings of $12 trillion in stocks and bonds as of end-2017, the United States in aggregate is the single largest cross-border investor. Authors exploit the underlying security-level data on U.S. cross-border portfolio holdings collected as part of the Treasury International Capital (TIC) system. Using security-level identifiers as well as modern text matching techniques, authors map these holdings, security by security, to the country of exposure for each firm as assigned by commercial products designed for international investors, thus converting these holdings to a nationality basis. For common stock equity holdings, authors rely primarily on the constituent information for Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) country-focused equity indexes, supplemented with information on the primary _location of operations for firms that are not included in the MSCI indexes. For bonds, authors also rely on information about the ultimate parent company obtained from Moody's Investors Service, and, for asset-backed securities, about the underlying assets to map holdings of corporate bonds to a nationality basis. Each data file contains the market value by country of US holdings of long-term securities that are considered foreign on a residence basis as published in the Treasury International Capital data, and their corresponding values on a nationality basis, for end-December of each year.

The soil benchmark is the average position value of the soil in euro/m². The soil benchmark card is adopted annually by the Stuttgart Review Committee on the reporting date 31.12. This WMS is available in versions 1.1.1 and 1.3.0.

The Digital Geologic Map of George Washington Memorial Parkway and parks in the National Capital Area, Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia is composed of GIS data layers complete with ArcMap 9.3 layer (.LYR) files, two ancillary GIS tables, a Map PDF document with ancillary map text, figures and tables, a FGDC metadata record and a 9.3 ArcMap (.MXD) Document that displays the digital map in 9.3 ArcGIS. The data were completed as a component of the Geologic Resources Inventory (GRI) program, a National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) funded program that is administered by the NPS Geologic Resources Division (GRD). Source geologic maps and data used to complete this GRI digital dataset were provided by the following: U.S. Geological Survey and Maryland Geological Survey. Detailed information concerning the sources used and their contribution the GRI product are listed in the Source Citation sections(s) of this metadata record (gwmp_metadata.txt; available at http://nrdata.nps.gov/gwmp/nrdata/geology/gis/gwmp_metadata.xml). All GIS and ancillary tables were produced as per the NPS GRI Geology-GIS Geodatabase Data Model v. 2.1. (available at: http://science.nature.nps.gov/im/inventory/geology/GeologyGISDataModel.cfm). The GIS data is available as a 9.3 personal geodatabase (gwmp_geology.mdb), and as shapefile (.SHP) and DBASEIV (.DBF) table files. The GIS data projection is NAD83, UTM Zone 18N. That data is within the area of interest of George Washington Memorial Parkway, Rock Creek Park, National Capital Parks-East, Greenbelt Park and Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.
