The Management and Expectations Survey (MES) is a voluntary survey of British firms launched in 2017 to gather information on the use of structured management practices for the reporting period of 2016. The MES sample was a subset of the sample for the Annual Business Survey (ABS) (UK Data Archive SN 7451) for the 2016 reporting period, to allow the datasets to be linked. Researchers must still access the ABS as normal through the users’ chosen data access platform. This survey builds upon a previous ONS pilot survey examining management practices, the Management Practices Survey (MPS) (UK Data Archive SN 8182). Compared to the MPS, the MES has wider industry scope, including non‐manufacturing production and services industries; a larger sample size; an increase in the number of questions on management practices from 8 to 12; questions concerning managers and non‐managers separately.

The survey is designed to produce data that can be compared with a subset of the data collected in: the MPS, the US Census Bureau’s Management and Organizational Practices Survey (USMOPS) and the German Management and Organizational Practices Survey (GMOPS). The MES is more closely aligned (with regards to management practice questions) to the USMOPS and GMOPS than the MPS.

This table contains data at regional level on the number of persons employed on agricultural holdings, the corresponding annual work units (AWUs) and the number of holdings with workers.

The figures in this table are derived from the agricultural census. Data collection for the agricultural census is part of a combined data collection for a.o. agricultural policy use and enforcement of the manure law.

Regional breakdown is based on the main location of the holding. Due to this region where activities (crops, animals) are allocated may differ from the location where these activities actually occur.

The agricultural census is also used as the basis for the European Farm Structure Survey (FSS). Data from the agricultural census do not fully coincide with the FSS. In the FSS years (2000, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2010) additional information was collected to meet the requirements of the FSS.

Data on labour force refer to the period April to March of the year preceding the agricultural census.

In 2022, equidae are not part of the Agricultural Census. This affects the farm type and the total number of farms in the Agricultural Census. Farms with horses, ponies and donkeys that were previously classified as ‘specialist grazing livestock' could be classified, according to their dominant activity, as another farm type in 2022.

From 2018 onwards the number of calves for fattening, pigs for fattening, chicken and turkey are adjusted in the case of temporary breaks in the production cycle (e.g. sanitary cleaning). The agricultural census is a structural survey, in which adjustment for temporary breaks in the production cycle is a.o. relevant for the calculation of the economic size of the holding, and its farm type. In the livestock surveys the number of animals on the reference day is relevant, therefore no adjustment for temporary breaks in the production cycle are made. This means that the number of animals in the tables of the agricultural census may differ from those in the livestock tables (see ‘links to relevant tables and relevant articles’).

From 2017 onwards, animal numbers are increasingly derived from I&R registers (Identification and Registration of animals), instead of by means of the combined data collection. The I&R registers are the responsibility of RVO (Netherlands Enterprise Agency). Since 2017, cattle numbers are derived from I&R cattle, and from 2018 sheep, goats and poultry are also derived from the relevant I&R registers. The registration of cattle, sheep and goats takes place directly at RVO. Poultry data is collected via the designated database Poultry Information System Poultry (KIP) from Avined. Avined is a branch organization for the egg and poultry meat sectors. Avined passes the data on to the central database of RVO. Due to the transition to the use of I&R registers, a change in classification will occur for sheep and goats from 2018 onwards.

Since 2016, information of the Dutch Business Register is used to define the agricultural census. Registration in the Business Register with an agricultural standard industrial classification code, related to NACE/ISIC, (in Dutch SBI: ‘Standard Business Classification’) is leading to determine whether there is an agricultural holding. This aligns the agricultural census as closely as possible to the statistical regulations of Eurostat and the implementation of the definition of 'active farmer' as described in the common agricultural policy.

The definition of the agricultural census based on information from the Dutch Business Register mainly affects the number of holdings, a clear deviation of the trend occurs. The impact on areas (except for other land and rough grazing) and the number of animals (except for sheep, and horses and ponies) is limited. This is mainly due to the holdings that are excluded as a result of the new delimitation of agricultural holdings (such as equestrian centres, city farms and organisations in nature management).

In 2011 there were changes in geographic assignment of holdings with a foreign main seat. This may influence regional figures, mainly in border regions.

Until 2010 the economic size of agricultural holdings was expressed in Dutch size units (in Dutch NGE: 'Dutch Size Unit'). From 2010 onwards this has become Standard Output (SO). This means that the threshold for holding in the agricultural census has changed from 3 NGE to 3000 euro SO. For comparable time series the figures for 2000 up to and including 2009 have been recalculated, based on SO coefficients and SO typology. The latest update was in 2016.

When will new figures be published? According to regular planning provisional figures for the current year are published in November and the definite figures will follow in March of the following year.

Each year, the Greater Manchester Travel Diary Survey (TRADS) collects detailed transport and travel information from every member (aged five or older) of 2,000 Greater Manchester households. Respondents provide details about all the trips they make in a 24-hour period. TRADS focuses on the specifics of the trips and the characteristics of the people making them, rather than attitudes to, and satisfaction with, travel. The survey sample is designed to be representative of each Greater Manchester (GM) district based on resident demographics. The survey runs throughout the year, from the beginning of February to the end of the following January. The only days when surveys aren’t conducted are Christmas Day and any days following a bank holiday. The data collected from 2,000 GM households equates to more than 4,500 residents and around 10,000 trips. The key information captured by the survey includes trip origins and destinations, travel times, travel methods, and journey purposes. Surveying is carried out face-to-face by experienced interviewers. The response rate was 58% for both 2017-19 and 2024. The survey’s annual sample - a random probability sample stratified by district - provides confidence intervals of +/- 1% to 2% at the GM household level, and +/- 7% to 8% at the district household level. Before the pandemic, trip estimates were based on data collected over three years, providing confidence intervals of +/- 1% at the GM household level, and +/- 3% to 4% at the district household level. However, since 2020, travel habits have been too unstable for this approach, so estimates from 2021 onwards are based on single-year data. The survey data is weighted/expanded to the GM population based on each district’s population by age, gender, and Acorn Category. The weights are small, with high weighting efficiency. Between 2019 and 2022, the weighting methodology was updated to better account for population growth. In 2019, data was expanded to the Census 2011 population levels, while 2024 data is expanded to the 2023 mid-year population estimates. This change has most notably impacted districts with significant population growth, such as Manchester and Salford, where the estimated number of trips has increased despite a decrease in the average trip rate per person. In 2023, the questionnaire was updated to include new travel modes (eg distinguishing between electric and combustion engine car drivers) and new demographic questions (eg sexual orientation, gender identity). These updates remain in place for 2024. Changes were also made in 2023 to better capture commute and business trips, reflecting the working habits of GM residents, resulting in more commute trips and fewer business trips being recorded. For the 2024 survey, business trips and commute trips were combined into one 'Business and Commuting' category, due to very few business trips being recorded overall. The report includes data estimates for 2019 and 2024. While overall estimates at the district household level have confidence intervals of +/- 7% to 8%, caution is advised when interpreting sub-group estimates (eg commute trips, short trips, age, hour, and purpose) due to larger confidence intervals. Before the pandemic, TRADS estimates closely aligned with key variables and other data sources (eg census data, ticket sales, Google Environment Insight Explorer). And generally, TRADS trip estimates show remarkable year-on-year stability, even for smaller modes and journey purposes. For example, the number of taxi trips has consistently been around 100,000 daily since 2017. Note: totals in tables may not sum precisely due to rounding to the nearest 1,000. China Total R&D Personnel: Full-Time Equivalent data is updated yearly, averaging 1,619,313.700 FTE from Dec 1991 (Median) to 2022, with 32 observations. The data reached an all-time high of 6,353,569.500 FTE in 2022 and a record low of 670,500.000 FTE in 1991. The national breakdown by source of funds does not fully match with the classification defined in the Frascati Manual. The R&D financed by the government, business enterprises, and by the rest of the world can be retrieved but part of the expenditure has no specific source of financing, i.e. self-raised funding (in particular for independent research institutions), the funds from the higher education sector and left-over government grants from previous years.

The government and higher education sectors cover all fields of NSE and SSH while the business enterprise sector only covers the fields of NSE. There are only few organisations in the private non-profit sector, hence no R&D survey has been carried out in this sector and the data are not available.

From 2009, researcher data are collected according to the Frascati Manual definition of researcher. Beforehand, this was only the case for independent research institutions, while for the other sectors data were collected according to the UNESCO concept of “scientist and engineer”.

In 2009, the survey coverage in the business and the government sectors has been expanded.

Before 2000, all of the personnel data and 95% of the expenditure data in the business enterprise sector are for large and medium-sized enterprises only. Since 2000 however, the survey covers almost all industries and all enterprises above a certain threshold. In 2000 and 2004, a census of all enterprises was held, while in the intermediate years data for small enterprises are estimated.

Due to the reform of the S&T system some government institutions have become enterprises, and their R&D data have been reflected in the Business Enterprise sector since 2000.
