    Description

    projected population total, broken down by age and sex, for 2030, 2040, and 2050. They are benchmarked on the 2020 Decennial Census Count data from the U.S. Census Bureau to reflect the effect of the latest demographic trends on the future population. These projections were produced and released by the Cooper Center on July 1, 2024.

    The Cooper Center projections research is widely used and well received; this data has been cited by a diverse range of organizations including many federal agencies, state legislatures, businesses, non-profits, think-tanks, academic institutions, and the media. The last vintage of projections for 2020 were found to be highly accurate when evaluated and compared to the actual Census Count data.

    Description

    The Population online databases contain data from the US Census Bureau. The Census Estimates online database contains county-level population counts for years 1970 - 2000. The data comprise the April 1st Census counts for years 1970, 1980, 1990 and 2000, the July 1st intercensal estimates for years 1971-1979 and 1981-1989, and the July 1st postcensal estimates for years 1991-1999. The Census Projections online database contains population projections for years 2004-2030 by year, state, age, race and sex, produced by the Census Bureau in 2005. The data are produced by the United States Department of Commerce, U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division.

    Description

    This dataset consist of annual (2020-2100) county-level population projections for the United States (U.S.) for Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) 3 and 5. The original decadal state-level data is used as an input to the gridded population data model to downscale the state-level projections for each SSP to a 1 km grid. The 1 km data is then aggregated to the county-level using the 2020 TIGER/Line county shapefiles from the U.S. Census Bureau. The two data files are shared as .csv files with the following structure: Rows = Data for individual counties which are identified using their Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) code. The FIPS code is stored in the first column. Columns = Each year from 2020-2100 is an individual column. For easier reference, the state name associated with each row is stored in the last column. Values in each cell are the downscaled estimated population for that county-year combination. Values are fractional due to the weighting scheme used in the downscaling. The paper and model source code cited in the "Related Works" section describes the initial source of the population projections.

    Each year, the Forecasting and Trends Office (FTO) publishes population estimates and future year projections. The population estimates can be used for a variety of planning studies including statewide and regional transportation plan updates, subarea and corridor studies, and funding allocations for various planning agencies.The 2020 population estimates reported are based on the US Census Bureau 2020 Decennial Census. The 2021 population estimates are based on the population estimates developed by the Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) at the University of Florida.     About this dataset

    Context

    The dataset tabulates the Newman population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Newman across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    About this dataset

    Context

Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2024, population of Nebraska increased by 292,186. In this period, the peak population was 2.01 million in the year 2024.     Description

    The U.S. Census Bureau releases annual estimates of population by counties and municipalities as part of the Population Estimates Program (PEP). This is an estimate of population on July 1 of each year. Adjustments to previous estimate years are made with each release, dating back to the year of the last decennial census. Decennial figures for April 1 of the most recent decennial year will not get updated, but the July 1 estimate for that same year can adjust with each PEP release. The U.S. Census Bureau produces these estimates based on administrative records. At the municipal level, the PEP reports only population totals. At the county level, PEP data gives estimates for age, sex, race, and ethnicity. PEP releases come out in the spring following the latest estimate year. The demographic estimates of the PEP are used as control totals for the American Community Survey results released later that year.

    About this dataset

    Context

    The dataset tabulates the United States population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of United States across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

    In 2022, the population of United States was 333,287,557, a 0.38% increase year-by-year from 2021. Previously, in 2021, United States population was 332,031,554, an increase of 0.16% compared to a population of 331,511,512 in 2020. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2022, population of United States increased by 51,125,146. In this period, the peak population was 333,287,557 in the year 2022.     METHODOLOGY NOTES (across all datasets for this indicator)
    All historical data reported for Census geographies (metropolitan areas, county, city and tract) use current legal boundaries and names. A Priority Development Area (PDA) is a locally-designated area with frequent transit service, where a jurisdiction has decided to concentrate most of its housing and jobs growth for development in the foreseeable future. PDA boundaries are current as of December 2022.

    Population estimates for Bay Area counties and cities are from the California Department of Finance, which are as of January 1st of each year. Population estimates for non-Bay Area regions are from the U.S. Census Bureau. Decennial Census years reflect population as of April 1st of each year whereas population estimates for intercensal estimates are as of July 1st of each year. Population estimates for Bay Area tracts are from the decennial Census (1970-2020) and the American Community Survey (2011-2021 5-year rolling average). Estimates of population density for tracts use gross acres as the denominator.

    Population estimates for Bay Area tracts and PDAs are from the decennial Census (1970-2020) and the American Community Survey (2011-2021 5-year rolling average). Population estimates for PDAs are allocated from tract-level Census population counts using an area ratio. For example, if a quarter of a Census tract lies with in a PDA, a quarter of its population will be allocated to that PDA. Estimates of population density for PDAs use gross acres as the denominator. Note that the population densities between PDAs reported in previous iterations of Vital Signs are mostly not comparable due to minor differences and an updated set of PDAs (previous iterations reported Plan Bay Area 2040 PDAs, whereas current iterations report Plan Bay Area 2050 PDAs).

In between censuses, the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program produces and disseminates the official estimates of the population for the nation, states, counties, cities, and towns and estimates of housing units and the group quarters population for states and counties..Information about the American Community Survey (ACS) can be found on the ACS website. Description

projected population total, broken down by age and sex, for 2030, 2040, and 2050. They are benchmarked on the 2020 Decennial Census Count data from the U.S. Census Bureau to reflect the effect of the latest demographic trends on the future population. These projections were produced and released by the Cooper Center on July 1, 2024.

The Cooper Center projections research is widely used and well received; this data has been cited by a diverse range of organizations including many federal agencies, state legislatures, businesses, non-profits, think-tanks, academic institutions, and the media. The last vintage of projections for 2020 were found to be highly accurate when evaluated and compared to the actual Census Count data.
