    Coffee consumption in the United States amounted to over 26.3 million 60-kilogram bags in the 2022/2023 fiscal year. This is a slight decrease from the total U.S. coffee consumption in the previous fiscal year.

    Coffee production The coffee plant has its origins in Ethiopia and is now grown all over the world. Most of the world’s coffee is cultivated in South America, followed by Asia and Oceania. In 2021, over 77 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee were produced in South America. The majority of South America’s coffee production is attributed to Brazil. In the 2020/2021 fiscal year, global coffee production reached 175 million 60-kilogram bags.

    Coffee brewing in the United States Americans love their coffee and have dozens of different methods and gadgets for brewing and preparing coffee. A 2020 survey of U.S. consumers found that the most commonly used coffee preparation methods were drip coffee makers and single cup brewers. However, drip coffee makers have become less popular over time. In 2010, 77 percent of coffee drinkers used drip coffee makers, while in 2020 this share had dropped to 41 percent.

Arabica vs. Robusta In the commercial coffee industry, there are two main types of coffee species: Arabica and Robusta. Coffee beans of the Arabica variety are slightly larger, produce a smooth and aromatic taste, and are the most commonly produced coffee bean variety: in 2023/24, just over 97 million bags (60 kilograms each) of Arabica coffee were produced worldwide. Robusta beans are generally smaller and rounder, cheaper to cultivate, and taste quite bitter. Just over 74 million bags of this coffee type were produced during the same marketing year.

Additionally, 16.1 percent of consumers drink coffee a few times a week. The coffee market in the U.S. Domestic coffee consumption in the United States amounts to over 26.3 million 60-kilogram bags. There has been a steady increase in coffee consumption over the last decade. Many Americans buy their coffee at a coffee shop and café chain store. The vast majority of coffee shops and café chains in the U.S. are owned by either Starbucks or Dunkin'. There are 16,466 Starbucks stores in the U.S., compared to 9,580 Dunkin' stores. The next largest café chain, Dutch Bros Coffee, operates fewer than 1,000 locations. In terms of sales of coffee through supermarkets, drug stores, gas stations, and convenience stores, the leading single-cup coffee brand in the U.S. is Keurig Green Mountain, with a market share of about 23.3 percent. JM Smucker’s Dunkin' brand has a market share of approximately 18.6 percent. Coffee consumption by generation in the U.S. There are notable differences in coffee preferences among various generations. While Starbucks is the favorite coffee brand among Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z consumers, Baby boomers tend to prefer Dunkin'. Moreover, approximately 77 percent of baby boomers and 69 percent of Gen X report making coffee at home every day, compared to only 57 percent of millennials and 40 percent of Gen Z. The preferred brewing method also varies by generation. Gen X and millennials favor using Keurig machines and coffee pods, while baby boomers prefer coffee pot machines, and Gen Z gravitates toward ground coffee.

Coffee consumption in the United States amounted to over 26.3 million 60-kilogram bags in the 2022/2023 fiscal year. This is a slight decrease from the total U.S. coffee consumption in the previous fiscal year.

Coffee production The coffee plant has its origins in Ethiopia and is now grown all over the world. Most of the world’s coffee is cultivated in South America, followed by Asia and Oceania. In 2021, over 77 million 60-kilogram bags of coffee were produced in South America. The majority of South America’s coffee production is attributed to Brazil. In the 2020/2021 fiscal year, global coffee production reached 175 million 60-kilogram bags.

Coffee brewing in the United States Americans love their coffee and have dozens of different methods and gadgets for brewing and preparing coffee. A 2020 survey of U.S. consumers found that the most commonly used coffee preparation methods were drip coffee makers and single cup brewers. However, drip coffee makers have become less popular over time. In 2010, 77 percent of coffee drinkers used drip coffee makers, while in 2020 this share had dropped to 41 percent.
