Data for the market share and on-time performance sections of this project come from publicly available U.S. Department of Transportation airline data which can be found here. Every single domestic flight that is taken in the United States is recorded and made available to the public. While available to the public this data is very large and it is not easy to download.

The first step in downloading the data was to individually download it based on the individual year and month. With this manually intensive process and large datafiles a specific time frame was set from January 2018 to July 2022 (the most recent data available at the time of publication) which is close to five years. This timeframe was chosen because it includes data before the Covid-19 pandemic, during the Covid-19 pandemic, and the vaccine era of the Covid-19 pandemic.

After each of the individual files were downloaded it required manually filtering the top ten selected airlines using Excel. Once this process was completed the files were combined into one large dataset using R.

This raw dataset was pulled from the Airline On-Time Statistics and Delay Causes dashboard on the Bureau of Transportation Statistics website with a date range of June 2003 to January 2025 for all carriers and all airports.

A flight is considered delayed when it arrived 15 or more minutes than the schedule. Delayed minutes are calculated for delayed flights only. When multiple causes are assigned to one delayed flight, each cause is prorated based on delayed minutes it is responsible for. The displayed numbers are rounded and may not add up to the total.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics releases seasonally adjusted air traffic data based on monthly reports from commercial U.S. air carriers.

This dataset contains monthly air traffic passenger statistics for major U.S. airports from 1999 to 2025. It includes data on domestic and international passengers, categorized by terminal, airline, and destination. Useful for aviation trends, forecasting, and transportation analysis.

The Reporting Carrier On-Time Performance Dataset contains information on approximately 200 million domestic US flights reported to the United States Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The dataset contains basic information about 2 million flights (such as date, time, departure airport, arrival airport) and, if applicable, the amount of time the flight was delayed and information about the reason for the delay. This dataset can be used to predict the likelihood of a flight arriving on time.
