    Description

    The National Forest Climate Change Maps project was developed by the Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS) and the Office of Sustainability and Climate to meet the needs of national forest managers for information on projected climate changes at a scale relevant to decision making processes, including forest plans. The maps use state-of-the-art science and are available for every national forest in the contiguous United States with relevant data coverage. Currently, the map sets include variables related to precipitation, air temperature, snow (including snow residence time and April 1 snow water equivalent), and stream flow.

    Snow residence time (in days) and April 1 snow water equivalent (in mm) were modeled using the spatial analog models of Luce et al., 2014 (https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2013WR014844); see also Lute and Luce, 2017 (https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2017WR020752). These models are built on precipitation and snow data from Snowpack Telemetry (SNOTEL) stations across the western United States and temperature data from the TopoWx dataset (https://rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/joc.4127).

    A map service depicting Forest Service existing vegetation polygons for Region 5.This Existing Vegetation (EVeg) polygon feature class is a CALVEG (Classification and Assessment with LANDSAT of Visible Ecological Groupings) map product from a scale of 1:24,000 to 1:100,000. The geographic extent entails the northeastern portion of CALVEG Zone 6, Central Coast. Source imagery for this layer ranges from the year 1998 to 2015.     Description

    A depiction of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Region 6 (Pacific Northwest Region of the National Forest System) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) holdings colored by the year the data was acquired. LiDAR is an active remote sensing system that can be used to measure vegetation height across wide areas. This is not an exhaustive depiction of all LiDAR in Oregon and Washington, but instead includes only those acquisitions that fall partially or entirely within national forest boundaries. The LiDAR data coverage depicted in this map is updated regularly by USFS Region 6 staff.

    Description

    An area encompassing all the National Forest System lands administered by an administrative unit. The area encompasses private lands, other governmental agency lands, and may contain National Forest System lands within the proclaimed boundaries of another administrative unit. All National Forest System lands fall within one and only one Administrative Forest Area.

    This data is intended for read-only use. These data were prepared to describe Forest Service administrative area boundaries. The purpose of the data is to provide display, identification, and analysis tools for determining current boundary information for Forest Service managers, GIS Specialists, and others.

    The Forest Service has multiple types of boundaries represented by different feature classes (layers): Administrative, Ownership and Proclaimed. 1) ADMINISTRATIVE boundaries (e.g. AdministrativeForest and RangerDistrict feature classes) encompass National Forest System lands managed by an administrative unit. These are dynamic layers that should not be considered "legal" boundaries as they are simply intended to identify the specific organizational units that administer areas. As lands are acquired and disposed, the administrative boundaries are adjusted to expand or shrink accordingly. Please note that ranger districts are sub units of National Forests. An administrative forest boundary can contain one or more Proclaimed National Forests, National Grasslands, Purchase Units, Research and Experimental Areas, Land Utilization Projects and various "Other" Areas. If needed, OWNERSHIP boundaries (e.g. BasicOwnership and SurfaceOwnership feature classes) should be reviewed along with these datasets to determine parcels that are federally managed within the administrative boundaries. 2) OWNERSHIP boundaries (e.g. BasicOwnership and SurfaceOwnership feature classes) represent parcels that are tied to legal transactions of ownership. These are parcels of Federal land managed by the USDA Forest Service. Please note that the BasicOwnership layer is simply a dissolved version of the SurfaceOwnership layer. 3) PROCLAIMED boundaries (e.g. ProclaimedForest and ProclaimedForest_Grassland) encompass areas of National Forest System land that is set aside and reserved from public domain by executive order or proclamation. Please note that the ProclaimedForest layer contains only proclaimed forests while ProclaimedForest_Grassland layer contains both proclaimed forests and proclaimed grasslands. For boundaries that reflect current National Forest System lands managed by an administrative unit, see the ADMINISTRATIVE boundaries (AdministrativeForest and RangerDistrict feature classes). USFS boundaries are often referenced in national datasets maintained by other federal agencies.     Description

    This is a collection of bare-Earth digital elevation models covering selected U.S. Forest Service and adjoining lands in the Southwest Region, encompassing Arizona and New Mexico. The data are presented in a time-enabled format, allowing the end-user to view available data year-by-year, or all available years at once, within a GIS system. The data encompass varying years, varying resolutions, and varying geographic extents, dependent upon available data as provided by the region. Bare-Earth DEMs, also commonly called Digital Terrain Models (DTM), represent the ground topography after removal of persistent objects such as vegetation and buildings, and therefore show the natural terrain.The data contains an attribute table. Notable attributes that may be of interest to an end-user are:lowps: the pixel size of the source raster, given in meters.highps: the pixel size of the top-most pyramid for the raster, given in meters.beginyear: the first year of data acquisition for an individual dataset.endyear: the final year of data acquisition for an individual dataset.dataset_name: the name of the individual dataset within the collection.metadata: A URL link to a file on IIPP's Portal containing metadata pertaining to an individual dataset within the image service.resolution: The pixel size of the source raster, given in meters.Terrain-related imagery are primarily derived from Lidar, stereoscopic aerial imagery, or Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar datasets. Consequently, these derivatives inherit the limitations and uncertainties of the parent sensor and platform and the processing techniques used to produce the imagery. The terrain images are orthographic; they have been georeferenced and displacement due to sensor orientation and topography have been removed, producing data that combines the characteristics of an image with the geometric qualities of a map. The orthographic images show ground features in their proper positions, without the distortion characteristic of unrectified aerial or satellite imagery. Digital orthoimages produced and used within the Forest Service are developed from imagery acquired through various national and regional image acquisition programs.     Description

    The datasets used in the creation of the predicted Habitat Suitability models includes the CWHR range maps of Californias regularly-occurring vertebrates which were digitized as GIS layers to support the predictions of the CWHR System software. These vector datasets of CWHR range maps are one component of California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (CWHR), a comprehensive information system and predictive model for Californias wildlife. The CWHR System was developed to support habitat conservation and management, land use planning, impact assessment, education, and research involving terrestrial vertebrates in California. CWHR contains information on life history, management status, geographic distribution, and habitat relationships for wildlife species known to occur regularly in California. Range maps represent the maximum, current geographic extent of each species within California. They were originally delineated at a scale of 1:5,000,000 by species-level experts and have gradually been revised at a scale of 1:1,000,000. The webpage provides links to download CWHR data and user documents such as a look up table of available range maps including species code, species name, and range map revision history; a full set of CWHR GIS data; .pdf files of each range map or species life history accounts; and a User Guide.The models also used the CALFIRE-FRAP compiled "best available" land cover data known as Fveg. This compilation dataset was created as a single data layer, to support the various analyses required for the Forest and Rangeland Assessment, a legislatively mandated function. These data are being updated to support on-going analyses and to prepare for the next FRAP assessment in 2015. An accurate depiction of the spatial distribution of habitat types within California is required for a variety of legislatively-mandated government functions. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protections CALFIRE Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP), in cooperation with California Department of Fish and Wildlife VegCamp program and extensive use of USDA Forest Service Region 5 Remote Sensing Laboratory (RSL) data, has compiled the "best available" land cover data available for California into a single comprehensive statewide data set. The data span a period from approximately 1990 to 2014. Typically the most current, detailed and consistent data were collected for various regions of the state. Decision rules were developed that controlled which layers were given priority in areas of overlap. Cross-walks were used to compile the various sources into the common classification scheme, the California Wildlife Habitat Relationships (CWHR) system.CWHR range data was used together with the FVEG vegetation maps and CWHR habitat suitability ranks to create Predicted Habitat Suitability maps for species. The Predicted Habitat Suitability maps show the mean habitat suitability score for the species, as defined in CWHR. CWHR defines habitat suitability as NO SUITABILITY (0), LOW (0.33), MEDIUM (0.66), or HIGH (1) for reproduction, cover, and feeding for each species in each habitat stage (habitat type, size, and density combination). The mean is the average of the reproduction, cover, and feeding scores, and can be interpreted as LOW (less than 0.34), MEDIUM (0.34-0.66), and HIGH (greater than 0.66) suitability. Note that habitat suitability ranks were developed based on habitat patch sizes >40 acres in size, and are best interpreted for habitat patches >200 acres in size. The CWHR Predicted Habitat Suitability rasters are named according to the 4 digit alpha-numeric species CWHR ID code. The CWHR Species Lookup Table contains a record for each species including its CWHR ID, scientific name, common name, and range map revision history (available for download at https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Data/CWHR).

    This is a collection of Canopy Height rasters covering selected U.S. Forest Service and adjoining lands in the Southwest Region, encompassing Arizona and New Mexico. The data are presented in a time-enabled format, allowing the end-user to view available data year-by-year, or all available years at once, within a GIS system. The data encompass varying years, varying resolutions, and varying geographic extents, dependent upon available data as provided by the region. The data represents the height of vegetation above ground, measured in meters.The data contains an attribute table. Notable attributes that may be of interest to an end-user are:lowps: the pixel size of the source raster, given in meters.highps: the pixel size of the top-most pyramid for the raster, given in meters.beginyear: the first year of data acquisition for an individual dataset.endyear: the final year of data acquisition for an individual dataset.dataset_name: the name of the individual dataset within the collection.metadata: A URL link to a file on IIPP's Portal containing metadata pertaining to an individual dataset within the image service.resolution: The pixel size of the source raster, given in meters.Canopy Height data are primarily derived from Lidar datasets. Consequently, these derivatives inherit the limitations and uncertainties of the parent sensor and platform and the processing techniques used to produce the imagery. The images are orthographic; they have been georeferenced and displacement due to sensor orientation and topography have been removed, producing data that combines the characteristics of an image with the geometric qualities of a map. The orthographic images show ground features in their proper positions, without the distortion characteristic of unrectified aerial or satellite imagery. Digital orthoimages produced and used within the Forest Service are developed from imagery acquired through various national and regional image acquisition programs.     The National Forest Climate Change Maps project was developed by the Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS) and the Office of Sustainability and Climate to meet the needs of national forest managers for information on projected climate changes at a scale relevant to decision making processes, including forest plans. The maps use state-of-the-art science and are available for every national forest in the contiguous United States with relevant data coverage. Currently, the map sets include variables related to precipitation, air temperature, snow (including snow residence time and April 1 snow water equivalent), and stream flow.

    Historical (1975-2005) and future (2071-2090) precipitation and temperature data for the contiguous United States are ensemble mean values across 20 global climate models from the CMIP5 experiment (https://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/abs/10.1175/BAMS-D-11-00094.1), downscaled to a 4 km grid. For more information on the downscaling method and to access the data, please see Abatzoglou and Brown, 2012 (https://rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/joc.2312) and the Northwest Knowledge Network (https://climate.northwestknowledge.net/MACA/). Preferred /Common Name of the National Forest Units - The common names of the national forest and grassland match the preferred name column that is present in the common names decision table maintained by the FS Office of Communication. 3. Hyperlinks to FS WWW Home page - This column contains the national forest and their respective FS WWW URL information. This URL could be used on any interactive map applications to link users directly to a forest's home page. Data Source - This dataset is derived from the following FS ALP (Automated Lands Program) Land Status Records System authoritative data sources: 1. Administrative Forest Boundaries 2. Proclaimed Forest Boundaries 3. Ranger District Boundaries 4. National Grassland Areas. The common names decision table maintained by the FS Office of Communication contains the common name and its respective Land Status Records System authoritative data source to be used for building the spatial polygon. The spatial polygons for every feature in this dataset comes from one or more authoritative data sources listed above. Web map for use with the R2 Mobile App. Focuses on the the Rocky Mountain Region (R2) of the USDA Forest Service. Depicts National Forest and Grasslands both as boundaries and with points, and state boundaries. When zoomed out, there are single points for each administrative unit, while when zoomed in closer to a larger scale, there is a point for each National Forest and for each National Grassland within the Rocky Mountain Region.
