    In March 2025, inflation amounted to 2.4 percent, while wages grew by 4.3 percent. The inflation rate has not exceeded the rate of wage growth since January 2023. Inflation in 2022 The high rates of inflation in 2022 meant that the real terms value of American wages took a hit. Many Americans report feelings of concern over the economy and a worsening of their financial situation. The inflation situation in the United States is one that was experienced globally in 2022, mainly due to COVID-19 related supply chain constraints and disruption due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The monthly inflation rate for the U.S. reached a 40-year high in June 2022 at 9.1 percent, and annual inflation for 2022 reached eight percent. Without appropriate wage increases, Americans will continue to see a decline in their purchasing power. Wages in the U.S. Despite the level of wage growth reaching 6.7 percent in the summer of 2022, it has not been enough to curb the impact of even higher inflation rates. The federally mandated minimum wage in the United States has not increased since 2009, meaning that individuals working minimum wage jobs have taken a real terms pay cut for the last twelve years. There are discrepancies between states - the minimum wage in California can be as high as 15.50 U.S. dollars per hour, while a business in Oklahoma may be as low as two U.S. dollars per hour. However, even the higher wage rates in states like California and Washington may be lacking - one analysis found that if minimum wage had kept up with productivity, the minimum hourly wage in the U.S. should have been 22.88 dollars per hour in 2021. Additionally, the impact of decreased purchasing power due to inflation will impact different parts of society in different ways with stark contrast in average wages due to both gender and race.

    Description

    The estimated median household income and estimated median family income are two separate measures: every family is a household, but not every household is a family. According to the U.S. Census Bureau definitions of the terms, a family “includes a householder and one or more people living in the same household who are related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption,”[1] while a household “includes all the people who occupy a housing unit,” including households of just one person[2]. When evaluated together, the estimated median household income and estimated median family income provide a thorough picture of household-level economics in Champaign County.

    Both estimated median household income and estimated median family income were higher in 2023 than in 2005. The changes in estimated median household income and estimated median family income between 2022 and 2023 were not statistically significant. Estimated median family income is consistently higher than estimated median household income, largely due to the definitions of each term, and the types of household that are measured and are not measured in each category.

    Median income data was sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS) 1-Year Estimates, which are released annually.

    As with any datasets that are estimates rather than exact counts, it is important to take into account the margins of error (listed in the column beside each figure) when drawing conclusions from the data.

    Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, instead of providing the standard 1-year data products, the Census Bureau released experimental estimates from the 1-year data. This includes a limited number of data tables for the nation, states, and the District of Columbia. The Census Bureau states that the 2020 ACS 1-year experimental tables use an experimental estimation methodology and should not be compared with other ACS data. For these reasons, and because data is not available for Champaign County, no data for 2020 is included in this Indicator.

    For interested data users, the 2020 ACS 1-Year Experimental data release includes datasets on Median Household Income in the Past 12 Months (in 2020 Inflation-Adjusted Dollars) and Median Family Income in the Past 12 Months (in 2020 Inflation-Adjusted Dollars).

    This statistic shows the median household income in the United States from 1990 to 2023 in 2023 U.S. dollars. The median household income was 80,610 U.S. dollars in 2023, an increase from the previous year. Household incomeThe median household income depicts the income of households, including the income of the householder and all other individuals aged 15 years or over living in the household. Income includes wages and salaries, unemployment insurance, disability payments, child support payments received, regular rental receipts, as well as any personal business, investment, or other kinds of income received routinely. The median household income in the United States varies from state to state. In 2020, the median household income was 86,725 U.S. dollars in Massachusetts, while the median household income in Mississippi was approximately 44,966 U.S. dollars at that time. Household income is also used to determine the poverty line in the United States. In 2021, about 11.6 percent of the U.S. population was living in poverty. The child poverty rate, which represents people under the age of 18 living in poverty, has been growing steadily over the first decade since the turn of the century, from 16.2 percent of the children living below the poverty line in year 2000 to 22 percent in 2010. In 2021, it had lowered to 15.3 percent. The state with the widest gap between the rich and the poor was New York, with a Gini coefficient score of 0.51 in 2019. The Gini coefficient is calculated by looking at average income rates. A score of zero would reflect perfect income equality and a score of one indicates a society where one person would have all the money and all other people have nothing.

Table ACS_B19001H_HSEHLDINCOMEWHITENOTHISP contains both the Estimate value in the E item for the census topic and an adjacent M item which defines the Margin of Error for the value. The Margin of Error (MOE) is the plus/minus range for the item estimate value, where the range between the Estimate minus the Margin of Error and the Estimate plus the Margin of Error defines the 90% confidence interval of the item value. Many of the Margin of Error values are significant relative to the size of the Estimate value. This table contains 17 item(s) extracted from a larger sequence table.     About this dataset

    Context

    The dataset presents median household incomes for various household sizes in La Cañada Flintridge, CA, as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau. The dataset highlights the variation in median household income with the size of the family unit, offering valuable insights into economic trends and disparities within different household sizes, aiding in data analysis and decision-making.

    Key observations

    • Of the 7 household sizes (1 person to 7-or-more person households) reported by the census bureau, La Cañada Flintridge did not include 6-person households. Across the different household sizes in La Cañada Flintridge the mean income is $213,497, and the standard deviation is $75,043. The coefficient of variation (CV) is 35.15%. This high CV indicates high relative variability, suggesting that the incomes vary significantly across different sizes of households. Please note that the U.S. Census Bureau uses $250,001 as a JAM value to report incomes of $250,000 or more. In the case of La Cañada Flintridge, there were 2 household sizes where the JAM values were used. Thus, the numbers for the mean and standard deviation may not be entirely accurate and have a higher possibility of errors. However, to obtain an approximate estimate, we have used a value of $250,001 as the income for calculations, as reported in the datasets by the U.S. Census Bureau.

    About this dataset

    Context

    The dataset presents median income data over a decade or more for males and females categorized by Total, Full-Time Year-Round (FT), and Part-Time (PT) employment in Real County. It showcases annual income, providing insights into gender-specific income distributions and the disparities between full-time and part-time work. The dataset can be utilized to gain insights into gender-based pay disparity trends and explore the variations in income for male and female individuals.

    Key observations: Insights from 2023

    Based on our analysis ACS 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates, we present the following observations: - All workers, aged 15 years and older: In Real County, the median income for all workers aged 15 years and older, regardless of work hours, was $21,010 for males and $22,836 for females.

    Contrary to expectations, women in Real County, women, regardless of work hours, earn a higher income than men, earning 1.09 dollars for every dollar earned by men. This analysis indicates a significant shift in income dynamics favoring females.

    - Full-time workers, aged 15 years and older: In Real County, for full-time, year-round workers aged 15 years and older, while the Census reported a median income of $38,125 for males, while data for females was unavailable due to an insufficient number of sample observations.

    As there was no available median income data for females, conducting a comprehensive assessment of gender-based pay disparity in Real County was not feasible.

    When available, the data consists of estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. All incomes have been adjusting for inflation and are presented in 2023-inflation-adjusted dollars.

    • Full-time, year-round: A full-time, year-round worker is a person who worked full time (35 or more hours per week) and 50 or more weeks during the previous calendar year.

Across the different household sizes in Edina the mean income is $194,368, and the standard deviation is $89,171. The coefficient of variation (CV) is 45.88%. This high CV indicates high relative variability, suggesting that the incomes vary significantly across different sizes of households. Please note that the U.S. Census Bureau uses $250,001 as a JAM value to report incomes of $250,000 or more. In the case of Edina, there were 2 household sizes where the JAM values were used.
