The North American Roads dataset was compiled on October 27, 2020 from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). This dataset contains geospatial information regarding major roadways in North America. The data set covers the 48 contiguous United States plus the District of Columbia, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. The nominal scale of the data set is 1:100,000. The data within the North American Roads layer is a compilation of data from Natural Resources Canada, USDOT’s Federal Highway Administration, and the Mexican Transportation Institute. North American Roads is a digital single-line representation of major roads and highways for Canada, the United States, and Mexico with consistent definitions by road class, jurisdiction, lane counts, speed limits and surface type.
The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Primary roads are generally divided, limited-access highways within the interstate highway system or under State management, and are distinguished by the presence of interchanges. This resource contains statewide networks of roadways, railroads, bridges, and low-water crossings, for Texas only.
Roadways detail: The Transportation Planning and Programming (TPP) Division of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) maintains a spatial dataset of roadway polylines for planning and asset inventory purposes, as well as for visualization and general mapping. M values are stored in the lines as DFOs (Distance From Origin), and provide the framework for managing roadway assets using linear referencing. This dataset covers the state of Texas and includes on-systems routes (those that TxDOT maintains), such as interstate highways, U.S. highways, state highways, and farm and ranch roads, as well as off-system routes, such as county roads and local streets. Date valid as of: 12/31/2014. Publish Date: 05/01/2015. Update Frequency: Quarterly.
Bridges detail: As with the roadways, both on-system and off-system bridges are maintained in separate datasets (54,844 total bridges, 36,007 on-system and 18,837 off-system). Bridges have numerous useful attributes, see coding guide [1] for documentation. One such attribute identifies structures that cross water: the second digit of Item 42 “Type of Service”. If the second digit is between 5 and 9 (inclusive) then the structure is over water. The bridges datasets are valid as of December 2016.
The roadways and bridges datasets contained here were obtained directly from TxDOT through personal correspondence. An additional transportation data resource is the Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS) [3]. The railroads and low-water crossings were obtained through TNRIS.
November 2023 updates: in the years since this data archive was first published, TxDOT has developed an open data portal for downloading their roadway inventory and other datasets. Also, in 2023 TNRIS was renamed as the Texas Geographic Information Office (TxGIO). Their datahub [3] is continually evolving, but still has the tnris.org domain for now. We are not updating any of the basemap data in the contents list below, which was current at the time of Hurricane Harvey.

Last Update: 08/29/2024The statewide roads dataset is a multi-purpose statewide roads dataset for cartography and range based-address location. This dataset is also used as the base geometry for deriving the GIS-representation of UDOT's highway linear referencing system (LRS). A network analysis dataset for route-finding can also be derived from this dataset. This dataset utilizes a data model based on Next-Generation 911 standards and the Federal Highway Administration's All Roads Network Of Linear-referenced Data (ARNOLD) reporting requirements for state DOTs. UGRC adopted this data model on September 13th, 2017.The statewide roads dataset is maintained by UGRC in partnership with local governments, the Utah 911 Committee, and UDOT. This dataset is updated monthly with Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, Washington and Weber represented every month, along with additional counties based on an annual update schedule. UGRC obtains the data from the authoritative data source (typically county agencies), projects the data and attributes into the current data model, spatially assigns polygon-based fields based on the appropriate SGID boundary, and then standardizes the attribute values to ensure statewide consistency. UGRC also generates a UNIQUE_ID field based on the segment's location in the US National Grid, with the street name then tacked on. The UNIQUE_ID field is static and is UGRC's current, ad hoc solution to a persistent global id. Geologic mapping, in support of the USGS Omaha-Kansas City Geologic Mapping Project, shows the spatial distribution of artificial-fill, alluvial, eolian, and glacial deposits and bedrock in and near Omaha, Nebraska. Artificial fill deposits are mapped chiefly beneath commercial structures, segments of interstate highways and other major highways, railroad tracks, airport runways, and military facilities, and in landfills and earth fills. Alluvial deposits are mapped beneath flood plains, in stream terraces, and on hill slopes. They include flood-plain and stream-channel alluvium, sheetwash alluvium, and undivided sheetwash alluvium and stream alluvium. Wind-deposited loess forms sheets that mantle inter-stream areas and late Wisconsin terrace alluvium. Peoria Loess is younger of the two loess sheets and covers much of the inter-stream area in the map area. Loveland Loess is older and is exposed in a few small areas in the eastern part of the map area. Glacial deposits are chiefly heterogeneous, ice-deposited, clayey material (till) and minor interstratified stream-deposited sand and gravel. Except for small outcrops, glacial deposits are covered by eolian and alluvial deposits throughout most of the map area. Bedrock is locally exposed in natural exposures along the major streams and in quarries. It consists of Dakota Sandstone and chiefly limestone and shale of the Lansing and Kansas City Groups. Sand and gravel in flood plain and stream-channel alluvium in the Platte River valley are used mainly for concrete aggregate. Limestone of the Lansing and Kansas City Groups is used for road-surfacing material, rip rap, and fill material.
