    Description

The 2022 cartographic boundary shapefiles are simplified representations of selected geographic areas from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). These boundary files are specifically designed for small-scale thematic mapping. When possible, generalization is performed with the intent to maintain the hierarchical relationships among geographies and to maintain the alignment of geographies within a file set for a given year. Geographic areas may not align with the same areas from another year. Some geographies are available as nation-based files while others are available only as state-based files. Divisions are groupings of states within a census geographic region, established by the Census Bureau for the presentation of census data. The current nine divisions (East North Central, East South Central, Middle Atlantic, Mountain, New England, Pacific, South Atlantic, West North Central, and West South Central) are intended to represent relatively homogeneous areas that are subdivisions of the four census geographic regions.

This data set delineates the boundaries of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service geographic Regions. The dataset was created as a geographic representation of the Regional administrative boundaries of the US Fish and Wildlife Service at a very coarse scale. The boundaries were created using the ArcGIS shoreline dataset from approximately 1995. This dataset should not be used for legal purposes or at small scales and does not accurately denote the shorelines of the united states. The Regional Boundaries data set is managed by the FWS Headquarters Information Resources and Technology Management, Branch of Geospatial Data Management. The complete data and metadata can be accessed here: https://catalog.data.gov/dataset/us-fish-and-wildlife-service-regional-boundaries. U.S. Census BlocksThis feature layer, utilizing National Geospatial Data Asset (NGDA) data from the U.S. Census Bureau (USCB), displays Census Blocks in the United States. A brief description of Census Blocks, per USCB, is that "Census blocks are statistical areas bounded by visible features such as roads, streams, and railroad tracks, and by nonvisible boundaries such as property lines, city, township, school district, county limits and short line-of-sight extensions of roads." Also, "the smallest level of geography you can get basic demographic data for, such as total population by age, sex, and race."Census Block 1007Data currency: This cached Esri federal service is checked weekly for updates from its enterprise federal source (Census Blocks) and will support mapping, analysis, data exports and OGC API – Feature access.NGDAID: 69 (Series Information for 2020 Census Block State-based TIGER/Line Shapefiles, Current)OGC API Features Link: (U.S. Census Blocks - OGC Features) copy this link to embed it in OGC Compliant viewersFor more information, please visit: What are census blocksFor feedback please contact: Esri_US_Federal_Data@esri.comNGDA Data SetThis data set is part of the NGDA Governmental Units, and Administrative and Statistical Boundaries Theme Community. Per the Federal Geospatial Data Committee (FGDC), this theme is defined as the "boundaries that delineate geographic areas for uses such as governance and the general provision of services (e.g., states, American Indian reservations, counties, cities, towns, etc.), administration and/or for a specific purpose (e.g., congressional districts, school districts, fire districts, Alaska Native Regional Corporations, etc.), and/or provision of statistical data (census tracts, census blocks, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas, etc.). Boundaries for these various types of geographic areas are either defined through a documented legal description or through criteria and guidelines. Other boundaries may include international limits, those of federal land ownership, the extent of administrative regions for various federal agencies, as well as the jurisdictional offshore limits of U.S. sovereignty. Boundaries associated solely with natural resources and/or cultural entities are excluded from this theme and are included in the appropriate subject themes."For other NGDA Content: Esri Federal Datasets

    Description

This CT Planning Regions layer consists of individual polygons representing each of the 9 planning regions that make up the state of Connecticut.

This feature layer is directly derived from the CTDOT Municipalities feature layer geometry, created by CT Department of Transportation. The municipalities are dissolved into their associated regional Councils of Governments.

This feature layer includes US Census Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) codes that are associated with each municipality. This was included based on information from Connecticut County to County Subdivision Crosswalk from the US Census.

Connecticut’s 9 planning regions provide a geographic framework within which municipalities can jointly address common interests and coordinate such interests with state plans and programs. CGS Section 16a-4a authorizes the Secretary of the Office of Policy and Management (OPM) to designate or redesignate the boundaries of logical planning regions. CGS Section 4-124j authorizes the member municipalities of each planning region to establish a formal regional governance structure known as a council of governments (COG).

These regions have been recognized as county-equivalents and supersede the eight legacy counties in the state.

    Description

Ecoregions denote areas of general similarity in ecosystems and in the type, quality, and quantity of environmental resources. They are designed to serve as a spatial framework for the research, assessment, management, and monitoring of ecosystems and ecosystem components. These general purpose regions are critical for structuring and implementing ecosystem management strategies across federal agencies, state agencies, and nongovernment organizations that are responsible for different types of resources within the same geographical areas. The approach used to compile this map is based on the premise that ecological regions can be identified through the analysis of patterns of biotic and abiotic phenomena, including geology, physiography, vegetation, climate, soils, land use, wildlife, and hydrology. The relative importance of each characteristic varies from one ecological region to another. A Roman numeral hierarchical scheme has been adopted for different levels for ecological regions. Level I is the coarsest level, dividing North America into 15 ecological regions. Level II divides the continent into 50 regions (Commission for Environmental Cooperation Working Group, 1997). At Level III, the continental United States contains 104 regions whereas the conterminous United States has 85 (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2005). Level IV ecoregions are further subdivisions of Level III ecoregions. Methods used to define the ecoregions are explained in Omernik (1995, 2004), Omernik and others (2000), and Gallant and others (1989). Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources downloaded first the Kentucky Data set https://www.epa.gov/eco-research/ecoregion-download-files-state-region-4#pane-15 , but saw that the boundary did match well the Kentucky state boundary maintained by KY Geonet. We then downloaded the national data set obtained from https://www.epa.gov/eco-research/level-iii-and-iv-ecoregions-continental-united-statesand intersected to the KY DGI state boundary, For those slivers assigned to unexpected ecoregions (55d Pre-Wisconsinan Drift Plains, 67h Southern Sandstone Ridges, 71m Northern Shawnee Hills, 71n Southern Shawnee Hills, 73c St. Francis Lowlands) we merged to the geographically nearest polygon so that the ecoregions found in this dataset match that in the poster Ecoregions of Kentucky.

    Description

Digital ecosystem information portraying the location and boundaries of the ecosystems. The Service originally chose the U.S. Geological Survey's Hydrologic Unit Map as the foundation for delineating ecosystem unit boundaries on a national scale. Since that time, boundaries in some of the regions have been moved to the closest county boundaries to simplify management responsibilities. The current unit boundaries reflect this combination.Data Set Contact: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Natural Resource Program Center, GIS Team Lead, richard_easterbrook@fws.gov
