The statistic shows the 30 largest countries in the world by area. Russia is the largest country by far, with a total area of about 17 million square kilometers.
Population of Russia
Despite its large area, Russia - nowadays the largest country in the world - has a relatively small total population. However, its population is still rather large in numbers in comparison to those of other countries. In mid-2014, it was ranked ninth on a list of countries with the largest population, a ranking led by China with a population of over 1.37 billion people. In 2015, the estimated total population of Russia amounted to around 146 million people. The aforementioned low population density in Russia is a result of its vast landmass; in 2014, there were only around 8.78 inhabitants per square kilometer living in the country. Most of the Russian population lives in the nation’s capital and largest city, Moscow: In 2015, over 12 million people lived in the metropolis.

We developed a model for analyzing multi-year demographic data for long-lived animals and used data from a population of Agassiz’s desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) at the Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area in the western Mojave Desert of California, USA, as a case study. The study area was 7.77 square kilometers and included two locations: inside and outside the fenced boundary. The wildlife-permeable, protective fence was designed to prevent entry from vehicle users and sheep grazing. We collected mark-recapture data from 1,123 tortoises during 7 annual surveys consisting of two censuses each over a 34-year period. We used a Bayesian modeling framework to develop a multistate Jolly-Seber model because of its ability to handle unobserved (latent) states and modified this model to incorporate the additional data from non-survey years. For this model we incorporated 3 size-age states (juvenile, immature, adult), sex (female, male), two location states (inside and outside the ...

Urban areas covered around 63,400 square miles of the United States as of 2017. Despite only constituting a relatively small portion of the country, urban areas are home to the vast majority of U.S. residents. Urbanization is expected to continue to increase over time, taking land from other types of land use.

GLORIA data for the Gulf of Alaska Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) were acquired during five cruises over a four year period. The first cruise conducted in 1986 (F-1-86-GA) surveyed an area of the north-central mosaic area and covered an area of approximately 40,000 square kilometers (sq km). The second two cruises (F-8-88-AA, F-9-88-WG) were conducted in 1988. One of the 1988 cruises (F-8-88-AA) focused on a survey of the Aleutian Arc. The eastern most portion of that survey extended outside of the Aleutian Arc survey area and covered an area of approximately 52,000 square kilometers (sq km) of seafloor on the western edge of the Gulf of Alaska. The final two cruises (F-6-89-GA, F-7-89-EG) were completed in 1989. As in earlier EEZ reconnaissance surveys, the USGS utilized the GLORIA (Geological LOng-Range Inclined Asdic) sidescan-sonar system to complete the geologic mapping. The collected GLORIA data were processed and digitally mosaicked to produce continuous imagery of the seafloor. Thirty digital mosaics with a 50-meter pixel resolution were completed for the region.

In 2023, Washington, D.C. had the highest population density in the United States, with 11,130.69 people per square mile. As a whole, there were about 94.83 residents per square mile in the U.S., and Alaska was the state with the lowest population density, with 1.29 residents per square mile. The problem of population density Simply put, population density is the population of a country divided by the area of the country. While this can be an interesting measure of how many people live in a country and how large the country is, it does not account for the degree of urbanization, or the share of people who live in urban centers. For example, Russia is the largest country in the world and has a comparatively low population, so its population density is very low. However, much of the country is uninhabited, so cities in Russia are much more densely populated than the rest of the country. Urbanization in the United States While the United States is not very densely populated compared to other countries, its population density has increased significantly over the past few decades. The degree of urbanization has also increased, and well over half of the population lives in urban centers.
Generated by one of the python scripts in the T:\GIS\Scripts folder. This csv file lists the approximate area of each school district in units of square kilometers, US survey acres, and square (US statute) miles. Note that there are two possible values for square miles due to the fact that there are two definitions of the foot--the US survey foot and the "international foot" which was standardized by international agreement in 1959. The data stores the shape_area column in square meters, and the two conversion factors are 2,589,998 square meters to a (US statute) square mile based on the US survey foot, and 2,589,988.11036 square meters to a square mile based on the international foot. This can lead to a small, but possibly significant, difference (roughly .0004% or 4 parts per million) depending on which factor is chosen. The python script that generates this file currently uses the US survey foot conversion factor for both the acres and sq. miles calculation. This decision was arrived at after some study, and is based in part on the fact that the older survey foot is still commonly used for land surveying in the United States. As this was generated directly from the Districts shapefile, the values given should be treated as approximations. This data is not the result of an on-the-ground survey, and should not be used for any critical business, engineering, or legal purpose.
