    Description

    Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL) is undertaking the construction of a Metro Rail in Kerala, India.The project involves the construction of a 37.3km metro line and is planned to be implemented in phases.The first phase involves the laying of a 25.6km metro line from Jawaharlal Nehru stadium to Aluva. It includes the construction of 22 railway stations and pedestrian ways.The second phase involves the construction of an 11.7km elevated rail network connecting 11 stations on a stretch from Jawaharlal Nehru stadium to the Infopark via Kakkanad, elevated rail lines and platforms.The second phase extension includes the construction of a metro line from Petta to Thripoonithura.The project also includes the construction of associated facilities, reconstruction of the Chambakkara bridge, and the installation of electrical equipment, signaling systems, safety and security systems, and the laying of railway tracks.In December 2010, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was appointed by the Government of Kerala, to commence the preliminary and preparatory works for the project.In July 2012, KMRL received approval from Central Public Investment Board and Union Cabinet for the project. The central government and state government will provide US$183 million and US$323 million respectively and US$42 million will be collected from state tax while the government will borrow US$395 million from external means. The project has secured funding of US$27 million from the state government.In May 2013, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between KMRL and DMRC. As per the MoU, KMRL will own the project and DMRC will act as executing agency.In April 2013, Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) was appointed as a construction contractor. The scope of the contract includes the construction of elevated viaduct and 12 stations for the first phase of the project. In June 2013, the construction works were commenced on the first phase of the project.Soma Enterprises, Era and Ranken (JV) have been appointed as construction contractors to undertake the construction of elevated viaduct and five stations. DB International has been appointed as a safety engineer for the first phase.In July 2013, DMRC issued an international invitation to tender for a contract to supply 25 three-car metro trains with a deadline for submission of tenders as October 3, 2013, for the first phase of the project.KMRL hired RITES Ltd to undertake a feasibility study from Kakkanad, the IT hub of the city, to Angamaly international airport under the second phase of the project.In September 2013, the state government provided US$36.7 million for the project from state government's basic infrastructure development fund.In November 2013, Canara Bank agreed to provide US$189 million loan for the project. On November 16, 2013, the Agence Francaise De Development (AFD), a French funding agency, approved US$243 million for the project.In January 2014, AFD team held final rounds of talks with the KMRL and loan agreement.In August 2014, Alstom was awarded a contract for the supply of coaches and rolling stock for the first phase project; however, they are yet to be provided with the manufacturing clearance by DMRC.In December 2014, Jakson Group secured MEP contract for the project. On January 21, 2015, KMRL board cleared the proposal for availing an additional term loan of US$75 million from the Ernakulam District Cooperative Bank for funding the land acquisition requirements of the project. On January 22, 2015, Alstom was awarded US$76 million electrifications, signaling, and telecom contract for the project.On May 20, 2015, the second phase of the project secured approval from the Government of Kerala.On July 5, 2016, KMRL signed Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Hero Solar Energy (P) Ltd.On July 14, 2016, DMRC invited tenders for the construction of road over the bridge with a submission deadline on August 22, 2016.A consortium of Cherian Varkey Construction Company (CVCC) and Vijay Nirman Constructions (VNC) has been appointed as construction contractor for Maharaja's College and Ernakulam south stretch.The Agence Francaise De Development (AFD), a French funding agency, expected to provide US$337 million for the second phase, whereas US$312 million to support the construction works and the remaining US$25 million for improving stations and setting up a command and control centre for a unified transport authority for the urban area.On April 27, 2017, DMRC invited tenders for the construction of two lane road over the bridge across Chambakkara canal along with metro viaduct in Alwaye-Petta line with a submission deadline on May 26, 2017.On May 17, 2017, The Kerala government has given approvals for the extension of the second phase.On June 17, 2017, Construction activities were completed on the first phase of 13-km long stretch spans across Aluva and Palarivattom and officially opened.On September 2, 2017, construction works on Maharaja's College and Ernakulam south stretch commenced.
