List of United States Postal Service (USPS) Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) Codes found within or partially within the borders of the City of Detroit.Implemented in 1963, ZIP Codes were created by the USPS to improve the efficient delivery of mail. The first digit in the code designates a broad geographic area in the United States. The following two digits pinpoint population concentrations and sectional centers accessible to common transportation networks. The final two digits designate small Post Offices or postal zones. For more information on ZIP Codes, refer to The United States Postal Service: An American History.ZIP Codes are one component of a mailing address and are not themselves suitable for mapping. For areal representations of City of Detroit ZIP Codes, please refer to our City of Detroit ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) dataset.More information on the difference between ZIP Codes and ZCTAs can be found on the US Census Bureau's website.

ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs)ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are generalized areal representations of United States Postal Service (USPS) ZIP Code service areas. The USPS ZIP Codes identify the individual post office or metropolitan area delivery station associated with mailing addresses. USPS ZIP Codes are not areal features but a collection of mail delivery routes. The term ZCTA was created to differentiate between this entity and true USPS ZIP Codes. ZCTA is a trademark of the U.S. Census Bureau; ZIP Code is a trademark of the U.S. Postal Service. How ZCTAs are CreatedThe Census Bureau first examined all of the addresses within each census block to define the list of ZIP Codes by block. Next, the most frequently occurring ZIP Code within each block was assigned to the entire census block as a preliminary ZCTA code. After all of the census blocks with addresses were assigned a preliminary ZCTA code, blocks were aggregated by code to create larger areas. The Census Bureau assigned blocks that contained addresses, but did not have a single most frequently occurring ZIP Code to the ZCTA with which the blocks had the longest shared boundary. If the area of an unassigned enclave was less than two square miles, it was assigned to the surrounding ZCTA. The Census Bureau used block group boundaries to identify and group unassigned blocks. These unassigned blocks were merged into an adjacent ZCTA based on the length of shared boundary. For the Census 2000 ZCTAs the Census Bureau created ZCTAs that ended in "XX" to represent large areas of land without ZIP Codes or "HH" to represent large areas of water without ZIP Codes. For the 2010 Census, large water bodies and large unpopulated land areas do not have ZCTAs.ZCTAs were created using residential and nonresidential ZIP Codes that are available in the Census Bureau’s MAF/TIGER database. ZIP Codes assigned to businesses only or single delivery point address will not necessarily appear as ZCTAs.In most instances the ZCTA code is the same as the ZIP Code for an area.In creating ZCTAs, the Census Bureau took the most frequently occurring ZIP Code in an area for the ZCTA code. Some addresses will end up with a ZCTA code different from their ZIP Code. Some ZIP Codes represent very few addresses (sometimes only one) and therefore will not appear in the ZCTA universe.Key Differences between Census 2000 and 2010 Census ZCTAsCensus 2000Includes the U.S. and Puerto RicoCover the full extent of the nation - "wall-to-wall" coverage3-digit and 5-digit ZCTA's available"XX" suffix used to represent large land areas such as national parks"HH" suffix used to represent large water bodies2010 CensusIncludes the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the Island AreasDo not cover the full extent of the nation - "holes" exist5-digit ZCTA's only"XX" retired - Large land areas such as national parks do not have ZCTA coverage"HH" retired - Large water bodies do not have ZCTA coverage

    Abstract

A crosswalk dataset matching US ZIP codes to corresponding census tracts

    Documentation

The denominators used to calculate the address ratios are the ZIP code totals. When a ZIP is split by any of the other geographies, that ZIP code is duplicated in the crosswalk file.

**Example: **ZIP code 03870 is split by two different Census tracts, 33015066000 and 33015071000, which appear in the tract column. The ratio of residential addresses in the first ZIP-Tract record to the total number of residential addresses in the ZIP code is .0042 (.42%). The remaining residential addresses in that ZIP (99.58%) fall into the second ZIP-Tract record.

So, for example, if one wanted to allocate data from ZIP code 03870 to each Census tract located in that ZIP code, one would multiply the number of observations in the ZIP code by the residential ratio for each tract associated with that ZIP code.

https://redivis.com/fileUploads/4ecb405e-f533-4a5b-8286-11e56bb93368%3E" alt="">(Note that the sum of each ratio column for each distinct ZIP code may not always equal 1.00 (or 100%) due to rounding issues.)

    Census tract definition

A census tract, census area, census district or meshblock is a geographic region defined for the purpose of taking a census. Sometimes these coincide with the limits of cities, towns or other administrative areas and several tracts commonly exist within a county. In unincorporated areas of the United States these are often arbitrary, except for coinciding with political lines.

    Description

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are approximate area representations of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) ZIP Code service areas that the Census Bureau creates to present statistical data for each decennial census. The Census Bureau delineates ZCTA boundaries for the United States, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands once each decade following the decennial census. Data users should not use ZCTAs to identify the official USPS ZIP Code for mail delivery. The USPS makes periodic changes to ZIP Codes to support more efficient mail delivery. The Census Bureau uses tabulation blocks as the basis for defining each ZCTA. Tabulation blocks are assigned to a ZCTA based on the most frequently occurring ZIP Code for the addresses contained within that block. The most frequently occurring ZIP Code also becomes the five-digit numeric code of the ZCTA. These codes may contain leading zeros. Blocks that do not contain addresses but are surrounded by a single ZCTA (enclaves) are assigned to the surrounding ZCTA. Because the Census Bureau only uses the most frequently occurring ZIP Code to assign blocks, a ZCTA may not exist for every USPS ZIP Code. Some ZIP Codes may not have a matching ZCTA because too few addresses were associated with the specific ZIP Code or the ZIP Code was not the most frequently occurring ZIP Code within any of the blocks where it exists. The ZCTA boundaries in this release are those delineated following the 2020 Census.

    Description

This layer represents ZIP Code outlines for the state of North Carolina. The counties are stored as polygons.

A ZIP Code is a five digit numeric code that identifies a collection of mailing addresses within the United States and its territories to simplify the distribution of mail by the United States Postal Service (USPS).

A ZIP Code is a delivery sort sequence and the USPS does not associate an area with each ZIP Code. Said another way, ZIP Codes are lists of addresses for delivering the mail. They are not areas. However, many ZIP Codes have delivery areas, and some ZIP Codes are for buildings or campuses that have defined borders. Boundaries can also be created by grouping small areas (defined by the U.S. Bureau of the Census for their nationwide street map) based on the dominant ZIP Code of the addresses in each small area, but this is an approximation because carrier routes may overlap and portions of the country have no deliverable addresses. The ZIP Code areas often do not adhere to boundaries of cities, towns, counties, or states.

    County definition

In the United States, a county is an administrative or political subdivision of a state that consists of a geographic region with specific boundaries and usually some level of governmental authority. The term "county" is used in 48 U.S. states, while Louisiana and Alaska have functionally equivalent subdivisions called parishes and boroughs, respectively.

    Description

US Postal Service Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) Codes are used throughout the United States to improve mail delivery. There are 479 unique 5-digit ZIP Codes in Oregon all starting with 97. All ZIP Codes are assigned and managed exclusively by the US Postal Service. There are three main categories of ZIP Codes - 1) Standard, 2) PO Box Only, 3) Unique for large commercial and government customers.

Each ZIP Code is assigned a preferred city name by the US Postal Service. NOTE - these city names may not correspond with the city limits or other jurisdiction boundaries of incorporated cities. There are other acceptable city names listed that may be used for mailing addresses for some ZIP Codes. There are also other city names to avoid using for mailing addresses. To verify the preferred, acceptable, or city names to avoid enter the ZIP Code in this tool from the US Postal Service - https://tools.usps.com/zip-code-lookup.htm?citybyzipcode

This is not a product of the US Postal Service. It was compiled by checking all numbers from 97000 - 97999 with the ZIP Code Lookup tool.

Most Standard and some PO Box Only ZIP Codes may also be listed as Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZTCA). NOTE - The ZTCA is only an approximation of a ZIP Code area based on the predominate ZIP Code of all housing units in each Census block. ZIP Codes actually follow lines of travel along letter carrier routes and are not polygons as shown by the ZTCA.

For postal codes and place name for which no corresponding toponym in the main geonames database could be found an average lat/lng of 'neighbouring' postal codes is calculated. Please let us know if you find any errors in the data set. ThanksFor Canada we have only the first letters of the full postal codes (for copyright reasons)For Ireland we have only the first letters of the full postal codes (for copyright reasons)For Malta we have only the first letters of the full postal codes (for copyright reasons)The Argentina data file contains 4-digit postal codes which were replaced with a new system in 1999.For Brazil only major postal codes are available (only the codes ending with -000 and the major code per municipality). For India the lat/lng accuracy is not yet comparable to other countries.Update frequency: 1 month

    Description

This dataset combines annual files from 2005 to 2017 published by the IRS. ZIP Code data show selected income and tax items classified by State, ZIP Code, and size of adjusted gross income. Data are based on individual income tax returns filed with the IRS. The data include items, such as:

Number of returns, which approximates the number of householdsNumber of personal exemptions, which approximates the populationAdjusted gross income (AGI)Wages and salariesDividends before exclusionInterest received Enrichment and notes:- the original data sheets (a column per variable, a line per year, zipcode and AGI group) have been transposed to get a record per year, zipcode, AGI group and variable- the data for Wyoming in 2006 was removed because AGI classes were not correctly defined, making the resulting data unfit for analysis.- the AGI groups have seen their definitions change: the variable "AGI Class" was used until 2008, with various intervals of AGI; "AGI Stub" replaced it in 2009. We provided the literal intervals (eg. "$50,000 under $75,000") as "AGI Group" in each case to help the analysis.- the codes for each tax item have been joined with a dataset of variables to provide full names.- some tax items are available since 2005, others since more recent years, depending on their introduction date (available in the dataset of variables); as a consequence, the time range of the plots or graphs may vary.- the unit for amounts and AGIs is a thousand dollars.
