    Description

Responsible parties are conventionally defined as those capable of announcing their legislative goals and then passing them on the strength of their own members’ votes. In this paper, I consider why UK majority parties have closely approximated these conditions for responsibility since the 1880s, while US majority parties have never approximated them closely. I provide the first systematic evidence on when the British opposition began to offer across-the-board opposition to the government’s agenda and when the government became able to pass bills using only its own members’ votes. I also explore the role that leaders’ control of the legislative agenda and their followers’ nominations played in these developments. I attribute US parties’ inability to mimic their British counterparts to different costs of defending bill passage coalitions against “weakest-link” attacks.

    Description

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner. This study estimates the size of the union wage premium in Britain and the United States over the last two decades. The project compared trends in the wage premium between the US and Britain to provide insights into the way unions operate in a period of union decline. For Britain, the analysis was based on data from the British Social Attitudes Surveys (BSA) 1983-2002, the Labour Force Surveys for 1989-2000 (LFS) and the Workplace Employee Relations Survey 1998 (WERS98), which are all held at the UK Data Archive (see web page links below). For the US, the Current Population Surveys 1973-2002 (not held at UKDA) were used. Users should note that this deposit includes data from BSA and WERS98 only, not LFS, and covers Britain only, for the years 1983-2001. No separate documentation has been deposited for this study, but users may find the original documentation for BSA and WERS useful. Links to the documentation for these studies may be found via the UKDA's major studies web pages: British Social Attitudes Workplace Employee Relations For further information on the project, including data sources, compilation and variables, the depositor suggests that users consult the ESRC Society Today web site, using the grant number R000223958. Main Topics: The files include the following information: membwag3: linked employer-employee data from WERS98 where the unit is the employee; tsearn: repeat cross-section data from BSA 1983-2002; wag8998: 1989 and 1998 analysis of the impact of the closed shop and perceptions of union power on the wage premium. Description

In the USA and the UK, many thousands of police suspects are identified by eyewitnesses every year. Unfortunately, many of those suspects are innocent, which becomes evident when they are exonerated by DNA testing, often after having been imprisoned for years. It is, therefore, imperative to use identification procedures that best enable eyewitnesses to discriminate innocent from guilty suspects. Although police investigators in both countries often administer line-up procedures, the details of how line-ups are presented are quite different and an important direct comparison has yet to be conducted. We investigated whether these two line-up procedures differ in terms of (i) discriminability (using receiver operating characteristic analysis) and (ii) reliability (using confidence–accuracy characteristic analysis). A total of 2249 participants watched a video of a crime and were later tested using either a six-person simultaneous photo line-up procedure (USA) or a nine-person sequential video line-up procedure (UK). US line-up procedure yielded significantly higher discriminability and significantly higher reliability. The results do not pinpoint the reason for the observed difference between the two procedures, but they do suggest that there is much room for improvement with the UK line-up.

    Description

Across the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the European Union, gross domestic products (GDP) decreased in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, by 2021, growth rates were positive in all four areas again. The United Kingdom, Germany, and the European Union all experiencing slow economic growth in 2023 amid high inflation, with Germany even seeing an economic recession. GDP and its components GDP refers to the total market value of all goods and services that are produced within a country per year. It is composed of government spending, consumption, business investments and net exports. It is an important indicator to measure the economic strength of a country. Economists rely on a variety of factors when predicting the future performance of the GDP. Inflation rate is one of the economic indicators providing insight into the future behavior of households, which make up a significant proportion of GDP. Projections are based on the past performance of such information. Future considerations Some factors can be more easily predicted than others. For example, projections of the annual inflation rate of the United States are easy to come by. However, the intensity and impact of something like Brexit is difficult to predict. Moreover, the occurrence and impact of events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's war in Ukraine is difficult to foresee. Hence, actual GDP growth may be higher or lower than the original estimates.

    Description

ObjectivesThis study examined differences in perceived discrimination across multiple characteristics in England and the United States (US), in middle- and older-aged adults.MethodsUsing data from the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (N = 8,671) and the US-based Health and Retirement Study (N = 7,927), we assessed cross-national differences in perceived discrimination attributed to disability, financial status, sex, race, sexual orientation, and weight. We also compared how perceived discrimination varied with socioeconomic position (SEP) based on wealth.ResultsPerceived discrimination due to financial status was more common in England (6.65%) than in the US (2.14%) adjusting for age, sex, and wealth [Odds Ratio (OR) = 1.09, 95% CI (1.07; 1.10)]. This affected people of low but not high SEP. Sexual orientation discrimination was more common in England [0.72 vs. 0.15%, OR = 4.61, 95% CI (2.48; 8.57)]. Sex-based perceived discrimination was more prevalent in the US (12.42%) than England (9.07%) adjusting for age and wealth [OR = 0.87, 95% CI (0.86; 0.89)]. Cross-national differences in sex discrimination did not vary with SEP. Racism was the most common type of perceived discrimination reported in both samples (England: 17.84%, US: 19.80%), with no significant cross-national differences after adjustment for sex.DiscussionPerceived discrimination attributed to financial status and sexual orientation were more prevalent in England, while more women perceived sex discrimination in the US. This study suggests that country-specific and socioeconomic factors affect the prevalence of perceived discrimination. This may be relevant when targeting interventions aimed at reducing perceived discrimination.
