    Description

The Southwestern Region is 20.6 million acres. There are six national forests in Arizona, five national forests and a national grassland in New Mexico, and one national grassland each in Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle. The region ranges in elevation from 1,600 feet above sea level and an annual rain fall of 8 inches in Arizona's lower Sonoran Desert to 13,171-foot high Wheeler Peak and over 35 inches of precipitation a year in northern New Mexico. Geographic Information Systems or GIS are computer systems, software and data used to analyze and display spatial or locational data about surface features. One of the strengths of GIS is the capability to overlay or compare multiple feature layers. A user can then analyze the relationship between the layers. Data, reports and maps produced through GIS are used by managers and resource specialists to make decisions about land management activities on National Forests. The National Forests of the Southwestern Region maintain and utilize GIS data for various features on the ground. Some of these datasets are made available for download through this page. Description

The Cropland Data Layer (CDL), hosted on CropScape, provides a raster, geo-referenced, crop-specific land cover map for the continental United States. The CDL also includes a crop mask layer and planting frequency layers, as well as boundary, water and road layers. The Boundary Layer options provided are County, Agricultural Statistics Districts (ASD), State, and Region. The data is created annually using moderate resolution satellite imagery and extensive agricultural ground truth. Users can select a geographic area of interest or import one, then access acreage statistics for a specific year or view the change from one year to another. The data can be exported or added to the CDL. The information is useful for issues related to agricultural sustainability, biodiversity, and land cover monitoring, especially due to extreme weather events. Description

This data set is a digital soil survey and generally is the most detailed level of soil geographic data developed by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. The information was prepared by digitizing maps, by compiling information onto a planimetric correct base and digitizing, or by revising digitized maps using remotely sensed and other information. This data set consists of georeferenced digital map data and computerized attribute data. The map data are in a soil survey area extent format and include a detailed, field verified inventory of soils and miscellaneous areas that normally occur in a repeatable pattern on the landscape and that can be cartographically shown at the scale mapped. A special soil features layer (point and line features) is optional. This layer displays the location of features too small to delineate at the mapping scale, but they are large enough and contrasting enough to significantly influence use and management. The soil map units are linked to attributes in the National Soil Information System relational database, which gives the proportionate extent of the component soils and their properties. Data was downloaded Oct 2023 from U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service. Last Updated 2023.

Burn severity layers are thematic images depicting severity as unburned to low, low, moderate, high, and increased greenness (increased post-fire vegetation response). The layer may also have a sixth class representing a mask for clouds, shadows, large water bodies, or other features on the landscape that erroneously affect the severity classification. This data has been prepared as part of the Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity (MTBS) project. Due to the lack of comprehensive fire reporting information and quality Landsat imagery, burn severity for all targeted MTBS fires are not available. Additionally, the availability of burn severity data for fires occurring in the current and previous calendar year is variable since these data are currently in production and released on an intermittent basis by the MTBS project. NAIP imagery is acquired annually with the total coverage being determined by available funds from FSA and funding partners, considering FSA priorities. The NAIP acquires digital ortho imagery during the agricultural growing seasons in the contiguous U.S (lower 48 states). The NAIP provides 1-meter or 60cm ground sample distance (GSD) ortho imagery or optional (with partner buy-up) 1/2-meter GSD ortho imagery, with a horizontal accuracy of +/- 4 meters to true ground. The data deliverables consist of DOQQ tiles and Compressed County Mosaics formatted to the UTM coordinate system using the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). The NAIP imagery may contain as much as 10% cloud cover per tile. NAIP imagery is generally acquired in projects covering full states, and is typically available for distribution within 60 days of the end of a flying season. It is intended to provide current information of agricultural conditions in support of USDA farm programs. It is also used by federal cost share partners to meet their mission needs. The 2017 Planned Acquisition Map shown here may change depending on funding. For more information about possibly becoming a NAIP funding partner, please contact APFO, Bridget Barlow at bridget.barlow@slc.usda.gov

    Description

This data set contains 4-band natural color and false color infrared (CIR) imagery from the National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP). NAIP acquires digital ortho imagery during the agricultural growing seasons in the continental U.S. A primary goal of the NAIP program is to enable availability of ortho imagery within one year of acquisition.

The source files are 60-centimeter (approx. 2-foot) ground sample distance (GSD) ortho imagery rectified to within +/- 4 meters to reference digital ortho quarter quads (DOQQ's) from the National Digital Ortho Program (NDOP) or from the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP). The tiling format of NAIP imagery is based on a 3.75' x 3.75' quarter quadrangle with a 300 pixel buffer on all four sides. NAIP imagery is formatted to the UTM coordinate system using the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83). NAIP imagery may contain as much as 10% cloud cover per tile.

The county mosaic files downloadable from the USDA NRCS Geospatial Data Gateway (natural color and color infrared) were generated by compressing NAIP imagery that covers the county extent. MrSID compression was used. Target value for the compression ratio is 40:1.

The Minnesota Geospatial Information Office (MnGeo) created this metadata record to describe the entire NAIP 2021 dataset, using information from FSA metadata. Each county file available from the USDA NRCS Geospatial Data Gateway is accompanied by the original FSA metadata for that county.

    Description

Data are intended for use in rural areas and therefore do not include land cover in cities and towns. Land cover classes (tree cover, other land cover, or water) were mapped using an object-based image analysis approach and supervised classification. These data are designed for conducting geospatial analyses and for producing cartographic products. In particular, these data are intended to depict the location of tree cover in the county. The mapping procedures were developed specifically for agricultural landscapes that are dominated by annual crops, rangeland, and pasture and where tree cover is often found in narrow configurations, such as windbreaks and riparian corridors. Because much of the tree cover in agricultural areas of the United States occurs in windbreaks and narrow riparian corridors, many geospatial datasets derived from coarser-resolution satellite data (such as Landsat), do not capture these landscape features. This dataset is intended to address this particular data gap. These data can be downloaded by county at the Forest Service Research Data Archive.
