    Description

This study empirically investigates how brands’ responses to competitors’ advertising actions change over the business cycle. Marketing data was made available by Prometheus, a brand performance tracker developed by Kantar Worldpanel. They cover marketing activity of 153 brands (including 15 private labels) manufactured by 27 different suppliers in six categories (bath gel, bottled water, dairy, laundry detergent, milk, and soft drink) sold in the Spanish CPG market. The data are available for 130 four-week periods from 2001 to 2010. Apart from advertising and promotion variables, for each brand, the dataset includes a survey-based metric on brand awareness over time, expressed as the percentage of respondents who indicated they know the brand, and data on brand price, or the price paid per unit (e.g., kilos, liters) by consumers in each period. This data is supplemented with data on the economic activity in Spain from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) - composite leading indicators available at: https://www.oecd.org/en/data/datasets/oecd-composite-leading-indicators-clis.html. This replication package contains scripts to replicate the results of a study that quantifies the advertising activity of the brands in Spain. The proprietary brand data from Kantar Worldpanel are not included in the data package because the company does not allow this.

    Description

Firms are increasingly transitioning advertising budgets to Internet display campaigns, but this transition poses new challenges. These campaigns use numerous potential metrics for success (e.g., reach or click rate), and because each website represents a separate advertising opportunity, this is also an inherently high-dimensional problem. Further, advertisers often have constraints they wish to place on their campaign, such as targeting specific sub-populations or websites. These challenges require a method flexible enough to accommodate thousands of websites, as well as numerous metrics and campaign constraints. Motivated by this application, we consider the general constrained high-dimensional problem, where the parameters satisfy linear constraints. We develop the Penalized and Constrained optimization method (PaC) to compute the solution path for high-dimensional, linearly constrained criteria. PaC is extremely general; in addition to internet advertising, we show it encompasses many other potential applications, such as portfolio estimation, monotone curve estimation, and the generalized lasso. Computing the PaC coefficient path poses technical challenges, but we develop an efficient algorithm over a grid of tuning parameters. Through extensive simulations, we show PaC performs well. Finally, we apply PaC to a proprietary dataset in an exemplar Internet advertising case study and demonstrate its superiority over existing methods in this practical setting. Supplementary materials for this article, including a standardized description of the materials available for reproducing the work, are available as an online supplement.

    Description

This dataset contains information about 22,915 unique banner ad images appearing on Chinese- and English-language web pages in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The dataset is mined from 1,384,355 archived web page snapshots downloaded from the Wayback Machine, representing 77,747 unique HTTP URLs. The URLs are collected from six printed Internet directory books published in mainland China and the United States between 1999 and 2001, as part of a larger research project on Chinese-language web archiving.

For each banner ad image, the dataset provides standard image metadata such as file format and dimension. The dataset also provides the original URLs of the web pages where the banner ad image was found, timestamps of the archived web page snapshots containing the image, archived URLs of the image file, and, if available, archived URLs of web pages to which the ad image is linked. Additionally, the dataset provides text data obtained from the banner ad images using optical character recognition (OCR). We expect the dataset to be useful for researchers across a variety of disciplines and fields such as visual culture, history, media studies, and business and marketing.

    Description

The statistical data generated through the administration of the Federal milk order program is recognized widely as one of the benefits of this program. These data provide comprehensive and accurate information on milk supplies, utilization, and sales, as well as class prices established under the orders and prices paid to dairy farmers (producers). The sources of this data are monthly reports of receipts and utilization, producer payroll reports, and reports of nonpool handlers filed by milk processors (handlers) subject to the provisions of the various milk orders. The local market administrator (MA) uses these reports to determine pool obligations under the order and to verify proper payments to producers. Auditors employed by the MA review handler records to assure the accuracy of reported information. Reporting errors are corrected; if necessary, pool obligations are revised.

After the pool obligations have been determined the local market administrator summarizes the individual handler reports and submits a series of order summary reports to the Market Information Branch (MIB) in Dairy Programs. The MIB summarizes the individual order data and disseminates this information via monthly, bimonthly, and annual releases or publications. Since milk marketing order statistics are based on reports filed by the population of possible reporting firms and not a sample, these statistics are comprehensive. Also, since these individual firm reports are subject to audit and verification, these statistics are accurate.

The Federal milk order statistics database contains historical information, beginning in January 2000, generated by the administration of the Federal milk order program. Most of the information in the database has been published previously by the Market Information Branch in Dairy Programs either on its web site or in the Dairy Market News Report. New users are encouraged to use the "User Guide" to learn how to navigate the search screens. If you are interested in a description of the Federal milk order statistics program, or want current data, in ready made table form, use the "Current Information" link.

    Description

Title: ROAS Optimization Problem for Maximizing Advertising Return

Abstract: This dataset has been created to analyze and optimize the Return on Advertising Spend (ROAS) in digital marketing campaigns. The data has been collected from an e-commerce platform's advertising activities based on various targeted keywords. It includes essential metrics such as advertising budgets, impressions, click-through rates, sales volumes, and revenue. The primary objective is to identify the most efficient advertising spending strategies using optimization techniques to maximize returns within a given budget.

Dataset Contents: The dataset is divided into six groups, each containing the following variables:

Keywords: The targeted search terms used in the advertising campaign. Advertising Spend: The budget allocated to a specific keyword (USD). Num. of Impressions: The number of times the ad was displayed. Num. of Clicks: The number of times the ad was clicked. Hit Rate (%): The conversion rate of the advertisement. Sales Volume: The total number of sales generated from the ad. Revenue: The total revenue generated from the advertisement (USD). ROAS (Return on Advertising Spend): Revenue divided by advertising spend. Proposed CPM (Proposed Cost Per Mille): The cost per thousand impressions suggested by optimization algorithms. Actual CPM (Actual Cost Per Mille): The realized cost per thousand impressions. Selected CPM (Final Cost Per Mille): The chosen cost per thousand impressions after optimization. Potential Use Cases: This dataset can be utilized for:

Digital Marketing Optimization: Developing budget management strategies to maximize ROAS. Machine Learning & Optimization: Applying metaheuristic algorithms to determine the most effective ad spending strategy. E-Commerce Performance Analysis: Evaluating the effectiveness of advertising campaigns in driving sales. Financial Planning: Measuring the return on investment for digital marketing expenditures. Target Users: This dataset is beneficial for academic researchers, digital marketers, data analysts, and engineers working on optimization problems.

    Description

The MATCHED dataset is a novel multimodal collection of escort advertisements curated to support research in Authorship Attribution (AA) and related tasks. It comprises 27,619 unique text descriptions and 55,115 images (in jpg format) sourced from Backpage escort ads across seven major U.S. cities–Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Chicago, San Fransisco, and New York. These cities are further categorized into four geographical regions—South, Midwest, West, and Northeast—offering a structured dataset that enables both in-distribution and out-of-distribution (OOD) evaluations. Each ad in the dataset contains metadata that links text and visual components, providing a rich resource for studying multimodal patterns, vendor identification, and verification tasks. The dataset is uniquely suited for multimodal authorship attribution, vendor linking, stylometric analysis, and understanding the interplay between textual and visual patterns in advertisements. All text descriptions are carefully processed to redact any explicit references to phone numbers, email addresses, advertisement IDs, age-related information, or other contact details that could be used to identify individuals or vendors. The structured metadata allows researchers to explore how multimodal features contribute to uncovering latent patterns in stylometry and vendor behaviors. A demi-data file showcasing the format and structure of our MATCHED dataset is attached with the entry. Given the sensitivity of the subject matter, the actual dataset resides securely on Maastricht University's servers. Only the metadata will be publicly released on Dataverse to ensure ethical use. Researchers interested in accessing the full dataset must sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and a Data Transfer Agreement with Prof. Dr. Gijs Van Dijck from Maastricht University. Access will only be granted under strict restrictions, and recipients must adhere to the ethical guidelines established by the university's committee. These guidelines emphasize the responsible use of the dataset to prevent misuse and to safeguard the privacy and dignity of all individuals involved.
