Social media users in the United States have a very high awareness of the social media giant. Expectedly, 94 percent of users had heard of the brand in 2025. Although the vast majority of U.S. social networkers knew of Facebook, the likeability of the platform was not so impressive at 68 percent. Nonetheless, usage, loyalty, and buzz around the brand remained relatively high. Facebook, Meta, and the metaverse A strategic rebranding from Facebook to Meta Platforms in late 2021 boded well for the company in Mark Zuckerberg’s attempt to be strongly linked to the metaverse, and to be considered more than just a social media company. According to a survey conducted in the U.S. in early 2022, Meta Platforms is the brand that Americans most associated with the metaverse.

The elderly population refers to the portion of a country's inhabitants who are aged 65 and older. This demographic plays a crucial role in various economic and social analyses, especially when it comes to determining the dependent population. The dependent population consists of those individuals who do not actively participate in the workforce and, as a result, rely on others for essential goods and services. This group primarily includes both the elderly and the youth (typically under 15 years of age).

The concept of the elderly dependency ratio is a significant measure used to understand the burden on the working-age population, which consists of those between the ages of 15 and 64. This ratio is calculated by comparing the number of elderly people to those of working age. A higher elderly dependency ratio indicates a larger proportion of elderly individuals relative to those who are contributing economically, leading to increased demands on social systems such as healthcare, pensions, and other support services.

These demographic shifts have widespread implications for both government policies and private sectors. As the elderly population increases, so too does the pressure on pension systems and healthcare services, necessitating reforms to ensure sustainability. Additionally, the aging population affects broader economic growth and welfare, as fewer people of working age contribute to economic productivity, potentially slowing overall economic expansion.

This indicator, often measured as a percentage of the total population, provides valuable insights into the aging trends within a society and their potential impact on the economy, welfare, and social structures. Understanding these trends is essential for shaping future policies that address the needs of an aging population while maintaining economic stability and growth.

    Description

Dataset supporting the University of Southampton Doctoral Thesis "Enhancing the grocery shopping experience of customers aged 65 and above in the UK by using emerging technologies". This dataset contains an excel file from the self-administered web-based questionnaire that was adopted to obtain a large number of opinions about the findings of the literature reviews and a card sorting method that was done by the researcher. The analysis of the data from the questionnaire aims to provide a better shopping experience to older individuals in future research. Ethical approval was obtained from the University of Southampton research ethics committee before starting the recruitment process (Ethics/ERGO Number: 62401). The questionnaire was designed using Microsoft Forms and the link of the questionnaire was sent between June and August 2021 to the participants through third parties, with the poster containing the main information about the research aim and data management. In addition, posters were placed in different places in Southampton and Winchester where older individuals normally gather, such as grocery stores and supermarkets, cafes and places of worship. The questionnaire covers several points, namely: shopping behaviour, labelling, store layout and products, checkouts, shopping satisfaction, technology use, and demographic information.
