    Description

    Data set that contains information on archaeological remains of the pre historic settlement of the Letolo valley on Savaii on Samoa. It is built in ArcMap from ESRI and is based on previously unpublished surveys made by the Peace Corps Volonteer Gregory Jackmond in 1976-78, and in a lesser degree on excavations made by Helene Martinsson Wallin and Paul Wallin. The settlement was in use from at least 1000 AD to about 1700- 1800. Since abandonment it has been covered by thick jungle. However by the time of the survey by Jackmond (1976-78) it was grazed by cattle and the remains was visible. The survey is at file at Auckland War Memorial Museum and has hitherto been unpublished. A copy of the survey has been accessed by Olof Håkansson through Martinsson Wallin and Wallin and as part of a Masters Thesis in Archeology at Uppsala University it has been digitised. Olof Håkansson has built the data base structure in the software from ESRI, and digitised the data in 2015 to 2017. One of the aims of the Masters Thesis was to discuss hierarchies. To do this, subsets of the data have been displayed in various ways on maps. Another aim was to discuss archaeological methodology when working with spatial data, but the data in itself can be used without regard to the questions asked in the Masters Thesis. All data that was unclear has been removed in an effort to avoid errors being introduced. Even so, if there is mistakes in the data set it is to be blamed on the researcher, Olof Håkansson.     ENGLISH below SAMENVATTING Op de Universiteit Utrecht wordt sinds 1999 een GIS bijgehouden waarin de reconstructie van het riviernetwerk door de tijd wordt bijgehouden (K.M. Cohen, UU; Berendsen & Stouthamer, 2001; Berendsen, Cohen & Stouthamer, 2001; 2007). De hier gedeponeerde versie is geproduceerd in 2011-2012. Het betreft een volledige herziening en aanzienlijke uitbreiding van het eerder gekarteerde gebied. Een valorisatie subsidie van NWO-ALW, aangevuld met financiering vanuit UU, TNO Geologische Dienst van Nederland en Deltares, hebben het herzieningsproject mogelijk gemaakt. De kaart volgt eerdere publieke versies (uit 2001) en interne versies van de UU (2003-2007) op. N.B.: Sinds 2012 zijn er uitbreidingen van de dataset geweest, als bijdrage aan landelijke en regionale karteringsprojecten (UU ism VU, RCE, Deltares, TNO). Deze interim versies zijn elders op archeology.datastations.nl als 'bronbestanden' in grotere datasets opgenomen. De tekstblokken STATUS UPDATE 2012-2024 lichten dit toe. ORIGINELE TOELICHTING Deze dataset en beknopte toelichting bevat de reconstructie van de ontwikkeling van het netwerk van stroomgordels in de Rijn-Maas delta in het Holoceen. Vanaf 9000 jaar geleden werden nieuwe riviertakken gevormd, weer verlaten en opgevolgd door jongere takken. Ook de mens heeft de vorming van het netwerk beïnvloed, in de jongste millennia. De zandbanen zijn hydrologische en archeologisch belangrijke elementen in de bovenste meters van de ondergrond van de delta. Het zijn zandige grondwatervoerende zandbanen die pakketten klei en veen in de delta versnijden. Deze vorm(d)en subtiel hogere ruggen in de van nature drassige delta, waarlangs bewoning zich concentreerde en verplaatste en van waar uit ontginning begon. Op de Universiteit Utrecht wordt sinds 1999 een GIS bijgehouden waarin de reconstructie van het riviernetwerk door de tijd wordt bijgehouden (K.M. Cohen, UU; Berendsen & Stouthamer, 2001; Berendsen, Cohen & Stouthamer, 2001; 2007). Anno 2012 baseert de kartering van beddinggordels zich op (i) boorgegevens, (ii) het actueel hoogtebestand Nederland (www.ahn.nl) en (iii) sedimentologische en geomorfologische interpretatie-principes. De datering ervan volgt met name uit (i) 14C dateringen, (ii) archeologische vondstcomplexen, (iii) historische bronnen, en (iv) geologische versnijdings-principes. De hier gedeponeerde versie is geproduceerd in 2011-2012. Het betreft een volledige herziening en aanzienlijke uitbreiding van het eerder gekarteerde gebied. Een valorisatie subsidie van NWO-ALW, aangevuld met financiering vanuit UU, TNO Geologische Dienst van Nederland en Deltares, hebben het herzieningsproject mogelijk gemaakt. STATUS UPDATE 2012-2024 Twaalf jaar na de release van deze digitale dataset, kunnen wij naar een aantal later verschenen, qua gebied uitgebreide en voor delen van de Rijn-Maas delta geactualiseerde interim versies verwijzen. Het betreft dan de kaartlagen stroomgordel-ouderdommen (ouddom.shp, de 'delta'-laag) en dal-ouderdom (daloudd.shp, de 'dal'-laag), waaraan in divers projectkader onderhoud is verricht bij de Universiteit Utrecht University (Cohen et al. 2017, Cohen et al. 2021) en bij de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Woolderink et al. 2018). Uit 2017 is er een interim versie onder de bronbestanden die onderdeel zijn van de landelijke Begraven Landschappen-dataset voor de Rijksdienst Cultureel Erfgoed (RCE). Het gaat dan om RCE_delta_polygon.shp (equivalent aan ouddom.shp) en RCE_dal_polygon.shp (equivalent aan de dallaag). In een memo en in de project-eindrapportage is een en ander gedocumenteerd. Uit 2018 is er een uitbreiding van de 'dal'-laag voor de Maas in Limburg ('clipped' op het studiegebied) uit het promotieonderzoek van Woolderink. Zie de dataset Woolderink et al. (2018): https://doi.org/10.17026/dans-xkk-f29b. Uit 2021 is er een interim versie onder de bronbestanden die onderdeel zijn van de toen geactualiseerde Begraven Landschappen-dataset van de RCE. Het gaat net als in 2017 om RCE_delta_polygon.shp (equivalent aan ouddom.shp) en RCE_dal_polygon.shp (equivalent aan de dallaag), en de Maasdal uitbreiding van Woolderink et al. 2018 is ook opgenomen.     Dit is een actualisatie (V2; productie 2020-2021) van een landelijk dekkend digitaal kaartbestand (T0123.shp) van Holocene begraven landschappen, voor gebruik door archeologische professionals. De eerdere versie (V1; productie 2014-2017) functioneerde sinds 2018 in RCE-data portalen (Rijksdienst Cultureel Erfgoed; Bronnen en Kaarten: Kaart-viewer: Buried Landscapes; Thematische viewer Landgebruik in Lagen). De kartering bestrijkt vier archeologisch relevante tijdsneden (T0 t/m T3; samen 12,000 voor Chr. tot 900 na Chr. bestrijkend): vier perioden van natuurlijke landschapsontwikkeling tot aan de grootschalige ontginningen van de kustvlakte (voor het landschap uit die jongste 1100 jaar wordt op RCE's Archeologische Landschappenkaart aangesloten, die in 2019 was herzien). De kartering verwerkte daartoe bestaande digitale geologische kaartbestanden zoals die door de partijen Universiteit Utrecht (UU), TNO en Deltares zijn aangelegd en worden onderhouden. De in 2014-2017 ontwikkelde geautomatiseerde wijze van productie is in 2020-2021 andermaal doorlopen, met geactualiseerde uitgangs-bestanden. Net als bij V1 (2017), bevat de dataset bevat de GIS Begraven Landschappenkaart als GIS bestanden (digitaal eindproduct), het geactualiseerde vervaardigingsrapport (Cohen & Pierik 2021) en kopieën van de uitgangs-bestanden (digitaal bron-materiaal, geactualiseerd 2016-2021), en bestanden die de gevolgde workflow digitaal vastlegden (ArcGIS ToolSet.MBX met data-combinatie modellen: scripted-workflow). De legenda-opzet is ongewijzigd t.o.v. van V1 (Zie Cohen 2017 in de V1 dataset). De gebiedsindeling is zeewaarts (12-mijlszone; memo Hijma en Van Onselen 2021) en landinwaarts (Holoceen Maasdal Limburg) uitgebreid. Anders dan in V1 werden de paleo-hoogtebestanden niet geactualiseerd. == This dataset is an actualisation (V2; produced 2020-2021) of a digital map (T0123.shp) of national coverage on Holocene Buried Landscapes, for use by archaeological professionals. The previous version (V1; produced 2014-2017) functioned since 2018 in The Netherlands' cultural heritage agency (RCE) data portals (www.cultureelerfgoed.nl section Bronnen en Kaarten; Map viewer: Buried Landscapes; Thematic viewerLandgebruik in Lagen). The map products cover four time slices, following an archaeological division scheme (T0 t/m T3; together stretching 12,000 BCE to 900 CE). They cover natural landscape evolution up to Medieval phases of extensive coastal and delta plain reclamation and reorganization (the landscape resulting from the last 1100 years is mapped as part of RCE's Archeologische Landschappenkaart, actualised in 2019). The mapping made use of existing digital geological dataset as maintained at Utrecht University (UU), TNO - Geological Survey of the Netherlands (TNO-GDN), and Deltares. An automated production method (developed in 2014-2017) was reran, taking in updated source mapping products. The data set contains the GIS data that stores the maps (the end product), an actualised version of the documentation of the production work flow (PDF 01 Cohen & Pierik 2021), copies of the ruling versions of the input digital map data (source data, actualised 2016-2021), and files that store the work flow digitally (ArcGIS ToolSet.MBX with processing-models: the scripted workflow). The legend setup is unchanged to that of V1 (03_Cohen 2017 and 05_Cohen et al. 2017 in there). Extent and areal partitioning of the study area was enlarged in seawards (12-mile territorial waters; PDF 03 memo Hijma en Van Onselen 2021) and landwards (Holocene Meuse valley Limburg).

Data set that contains information on archaeological remains of the pre historic settlement of the Letolo valley on Savaii on Samoa. It is built in ArcMap from ESRI and is based on previously unpublished surveys made by the Peace Corps Volonteer Gregory Jackmond in 1976-78, and in a lesser degree on excavations made by Helene Martinsson Wallin and Paul Wallin. The settlement was in use from at least 1000 AD to about 1700- 1800. Since abandonment it has been covered by thick jungle. However by the time of the survey by Jackmond (1976-78) it was grazed by cattle and the remains was visible. The survey is at file at Auckland War Memorial Museum and has hitherto been unpublished. A copy of the survey has been accessed by Olof Håkansson through Martinsson Wallin and Wallin and as part of a Masters Thesis in Archeology at Uppsala University it has been digitised. Olof Håkansson has built the data base structure in the software from ESRI, and digitised the data in 2015 to 2017. One of the aims of the Masters Thesis was to discuss hierarchies. To do this, subsets of the data have been displayed in various ways on maps. Another aim was to discuss archaeological methodology when working with spatial data, but the data in itself can be used without regard to the questions asked in the Masters Thesis. All data that was unclear has been removed in an effort to avoid errors being introduced. Even so, if there is mistakes in the data set it is to be blamed on the researcher, Olof Håkansson.
