A business licence can be obtained from the City's Licence Office and is valid for the remainder of the calendar year unless stated otherwise. NoteEffective May 6, 2024, the City streamlined its business licence categories, consolidating over 500 categories into fewer than 100. While data from before this date will remain accessible, this dataset post-May 6 is organized according to the new, streamlined categories. Learn more about this update Business licences | City of Vancouver. All existing business licences are transitioned automatically into the new categories. Some business licence categories retained the same name. Business owners will renew their licence at the end of each year and may select a different category from the one they were sorted into. New businesses applying for a licence after the update will also select from the updated categories.Business licence records from 2013 to 2024, up to May 3, 2024, with their original categories (BusinessType) are found in Business licences 2013 to 2024 dataset.Business licences 1997 to 2012 dataset remains the same.Effective April 12, 2018, the business license dataset, including historical data files from 1997 forward to the current year, has been updated for home-based businesses. A small percentage of businesses are issued with a replacement licence in a displayed year due to changes or when business type names were retired during mid-year. Address data of some selected business types was not disclosed to provide privacy protection. There may be addresses that do not return coordinates in the geoding process. These records will appear in the Table view but not on the Map. Description

Customer initiated service requests received by 3-1-1 Contact Centre from 2009 to 2021. Service requests refer only to those call types that generate a request to a City of Vancouver department to provide service. This dataset contains location information such as address or intersection where service was requested and the local area corresponding to the case (incident) location.Due to the volume of records, we segmented the service requests data into multiple datasets. See 3-1-1 service requests for records since 2022. NoteThe 3-1-1 case management system started collecting case service requests data on June 1, 2009. The system was upgraded on August 17, 2022. Department, Division or Call Types beginning with ZZ – OLD refers to obsolete types used in the past. Generally, another call type within the same division, or another division within the same department replaced the obsolete type. When reviewing case location data spatially, consideration should be given to the City’s urban attributes such as vegetation density, population density, age of infrastructure asset, area specific bylaws, etc. Some case types are associated with city locations. Data currencyData are static Data accuracyData are electronically extracted from the 3-1-1 case management system.Address data of some selected service request types was not disclosed to provide privacy protection. There may be addresses that do not return coordinates in the gecoding process. These records will appear in the Table view but not on the Map. Websites for further informationContact the City of Vancouver

    Description

Building permits are required for new buildings, additions or alterations to existing buildings, and for demolitions or salvage and abatement work.As permit application processing is a collaboration between the customer / applicant and the City, this dataset has been updated with the elapsed time from the date at which an application generated a permit number to when the permit was first issued. Specifically, the fields PermitNumberCreatedDate and PermitElapsedDays (includes weekends and holidays) are available in all views as well as through data exports and API access. In addition to existing fields that allow this data to be grouped (PropertyUse, TypeofWork, SpecificUseCategory) we have created a new group field, PermitCategory, that focuses on higher volume, lower complexity project scopes. This dataset includes information of all building permits issued by the City of Vancouver, starting in 2017. The data is based on permit issuance date and does not show current status of a permit or changes after a permit is originally issued. Data currencyThe extract for the current year is updated daily but the extract for prior year is static. Data accuracyThere may be addresses that do not return coordinates through the geocoding process (using BC Address Geocoder API). These Issued Building Permits do not appear on the Map. Description

This study addresses the lack of comprehensive 3D documentation of the University of British Columbia (UBC) Vancouver campus's architectural and ecological evolution from 2015 to 2024. By integrating 2D polygon shapefiles, Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data, Digital Elevation Models, and open-source geographical data, an interactive time-slider enabled 3D model was developed to capture the campus's historical transformation. The methodology leverages LiDAR point clouds to extract detailed information on buildings, vegetation, and terrain, supplemented by satellite imagery and vector data for validation and calibration. Results reveal distinct spatial development patterns: stability in the academic core around Main Mall with maturing tree canopy, contrasted with significant residential expansion in peripheral areas, particularly the Wesbrook neighborhood. The visualization demonstrates UBC's implementation of sustainability policies, including Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification standards for new construction, while balancing growth with ecological preservation. This model provides insights into the interplay between development and environmental planning, supporting evidence-based decision-making for campus planning while offering an educational tool for understanding the historical landscape changes. The approach establishes a replicable framework for similar historical landscape modeling efforts at other institutions seeking to integrate sustainability into their development strategies.

    Description

An annual inventory of most of the City of Vancouver’s ground-level storefronts (commercial retail spaces) and shopping malls. NoteThe 2020 Spring baseline for this data was collected over a long period owing to resource constraints caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. While most of the baseline data was collected from March to May in 2020, some areas were inventoried as early as January 2020, and others were inventoried through the summer. Thus, the period between the 2020 baseline and the 2021 update varies from 9 to 15 months. Data currencyThe inventory is conducted annually in the springtime (March/April) and this dataset is refreshed in June. Data accuracyThe addresses for each commercial retail unit (CRU) are mapped to the centre of the property parcels connected to that address. On larger parcels, multiple CRUs are mapped to the same location. Thus, spatially the data is accurate to the block, and there are instances (e.g. in downtown and Yaletown), where CRUs from parallel streets are mapped to the same point location. Websites for further informationThis inventory was developed based on a consultant study of City retail. Reporting from that project can be found at this Employment Lands and Economy Review page
