This dataset is a summarized version of 'Vehicle Registration Transactions by Department of Licensing', and provides easier access to high level statistics. The dataset shows registration activity by calendar and fiscal years.

This dataset shows counts of transactions associated with authorizing vehicles to be used on public roads, commonly referred to as “buying tabs” or “buying tags”. The data includes registration activity by fuel type, county, primary use class, and date. This is comparable to the Fee Distribution Report #13, that is titled "Motor Vehicle Registration By Class and County".

This annual release provides a snapshot of the number of active vehicle registration counts of light-duty vehicles and medium-duty vehicles by type of vehicle and fuel type, heavy-duty vehicles, buses, and motorcycles and mopeds. Data are obtained from the administrative files from provincial and territorial governments.

We update the data monthly, so it's accurate up to the end of the previous month.Registration is the process where we add a vehicle’s details to the MVR and issue its number plates. A TA is a broad geographical area defined under the Local Government Act 2002 as a city council or district council. There are 67 TAs consisting of 12 city councils, 53 districts, Auckland Council and Chatham Island Council.We haven’t included vehicles that belong to people with a confidential listing.We have restricted the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the first 11 characters – these are generic and don’t identify specific vehicles.Data quality caveats:Many of the fields in the (MVR) are free text fields, which means there may be spelling mistakes and other human errors. The data is verified at time of entry, but there is potential for data to be entered incorrectly.We have algorithmically cleaned the data to correct identified errors (particularly with respect to a vehicle’s make and model).
