    Description

The survey charted Finnish attitudes to energy production and energy strategy. The data are part of an extensive survey series launched in 1983. Respondents' conceptions, opinions, beliefs, assessments, attitudes and knowledge about various energy issues were studied by presenting several statements relating to energy production. The aim of this survey was to predict the consequences of the liberalisation of energy markets in 1997 which allows consumers to choose their own electricity supplier. Respondents were also asked in what direction electric power production should be developed in Finland. Background variables included respondents' gender, age, region of residence, occupational group, basic and vocational education, political party preference and number of inhabitants in respondents' municipality of residence.

The survey charted Finnish attitudes to energy production and energy strategy. The data are part of an extensive survey series launched in 1983. The respondents' conceptions, opinions, beliefs, assessments, attitudes and knowledge about various energy issues were studied by presenting several statements relating to energy production. The respondents were also asked whether Finland should increase or decrease the use of certain energy sources (e.g. coal, peat, natural gas, nuclear power, water power, wind power, bioenergy) in electricity generation. Some questions focused on the decision made by the Finnish Parliament to approve the construction of a fifth nuclear power plant. The respondents were asked whether they approved of the decision or not, had the debate on the issue changed their attitude towards nuclear power, and would the decision have a positive or negative impact on the standard of living in Finland, employment, safety, image of Finland, electricity prices, environment, industry etc. The Parliament's decision only meant that a permission to construct had been granted, and the survey studied opinions on how likely it was that the new nuclear power plant would actually be constructed. Views were also probed on whether the new plant should be located in Eurajoki or Loviisa. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, basic and vocational education, economic activity, size of municipality, region of residence, and which political party the respondent would vote for if the parliamentary elections were held at that time.

The survey charted Finnish attitudes to energy production and energy strategy. The data are part of an extensive survey series launched in 1983. The respondents' conceptions, opinions, beliefs, assessments, attitudes, and knowledge about energy issues were studied by presenting them with numerous statements relating to energy production. They were also asked whether Finland should increase or decrease the use of certain energy sources (e.g. coal, peat, natural gas, nuclear power, hydropower, wind power, renewable energy) in electricity generation. Opinions on the Finnish Parliament's decision to grant licences for two new nuclear power plants were charted as well as views on the preferred number of licences. Trust in various institutions and organisations as sources of information (e.g. different ministries, the government, energy companies, STUK - Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Greenpeace, WWF, the EU and various energy sector organisations) was surveyed. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, size of R's municipality of residence, region (NUTS3) of residence, basic and vocational education, occupational status and economic activity, and the political party R would have voted for if the parliamentary elections had been held at the time of the survey.

The respondents were also asked in what direction should energy production be developed in Finland and how important they thought the various factors connected with energy production to be (e.g. price, low pollution, availability, degree of domestic added value, safety and secureness of production). Moreover, the respondents were asked which would be the better alternative, nuclear power or coal, and for which goals society should appropriate funds. In conclusion, they were asked how interested they were in energy matters and how reliable they thought various actors to be as disseminators of information on energy issues. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age, size of municipality of residence, province of residence, occupation, education, and political orientation.

Opinions on whether Finland should increase or decrease the use of certain energy sources (e.g. coal, peat, natural gas, nuclear power, water power, wind power, bioenergy) in electricity generation were investigated. Relating to information on the environmental impact, prices and risks of different energy sources, the respondents rated the reliability of a number information sources (e.g. government, various ministries, Greenpeace, other environmental groups, energy industries, researchers). The survey also carried a a number of statements relating to the electricity market in Finland, and the respondents were asked how close to their own views the statements were. Finally, opinions on the location of the planned new nuclear power plant were charted. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, basic and vocational education, economic activity, size of municipality, region of residence, and which political party the respondent would vote for if the parliamentary elections were held at that time.

    Description

The survey charted Finnish attitudes to energy production and energy strategy. The data are part of an extensive survey series launched in 1983. The respondents' conceptions, opinions, beliefs, assessments, attitudes, and knowledge about energy issues were studied by presenting them with a number of statements relating to energy production, energy sources, climate change, energy prices, pollution, etc. The respondents were presented with numerous statements relating to energy production, energy policy, environmental effects of energy production, nuclear power and alternative sources of energy. The reliability of various sources of information (e.g. different ministries, energy companies and various organisations) was surveyed. The respondents were also asked whether Finland should increase or decrease the use of certain energy sources (e.g. coal, peat, natural gas, nuclear power, water power, wind power, bioenergy) in electricity generation. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, basic and vocational education, economic activity and occupational status, number of inhabitants in the municipality, region of residence, and which political party R would vote for if the parliamentary elections were held at that time.

The survey charted Finnish attitudes to energy production and energy policy. The respondents' conceptions, opinions, beliefs, assessments, attitudes, and knowledge about energy issues were studied by presenting them with several statements relating to energy production. They were also asked whether Finland should increase or decrease the use of certain energy sources (e.g. coal, peat, natural gas, nuclear power, hydropower, wind power, renewable energy) in electricity generation. Trust in various institutions and organisations as sources of information (e.g. different ministries, the government, energy companies, STUK - Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Greenpeace, WWF, the EU and various energy sector organisations) in energy issues was surveyed. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age group, type of R's municipality of residence, region (NUTS3) of residence, basic and vocational education, occupational status and economic activity, annual gross income of the household, and the political party R would have voted for if the parliamentary elections had been held at the time of the survey.

The survey studied Finnish public opinion on energy policy issues. The data are part of an extensive survey series launched in 1983. The respondents' conceptions of various energy issues, their evaluations, opinions, beliefs, assessments, attitudes, and knowledge about them were studied by presenting several statements about energy production. The respondents were also asked in what direction should energy production be developed in Finland and how important they thought the various factors connected with energy production to be (e.g. price, low pollution, availability, degree of domestic added value, safety and secureness of production). Moreover, the respondents were asked whether their attitude towards nuclear power had changed during the past year. Background variables included the respondent's gender, age, size of municipality of residence, province of residence, occupation, education, and political orientation.
