    Description

    Energy production and consumption statistics are provided in total and by fuel, and provide an analysis of the latest 3 months data compared to the same period a year earlier. Energy price statistics cover domestic price indices, prices of road fuels and petroleum products and comparisons of international road fuel prices.

    Energy production and consumption

    Highlights for the 3 month period January to March 2018, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 4.0% driven by the colder weather in February and March 2018, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 0.2%. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 0.9%, with oil and renewables output up but gas and nuclear output down. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 1.0%, with coal down 16.4% and gas down 2.2%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 43.6% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 25.7%, nuclear at 19.9% and coal at 10.9%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 2.5 percentage points to 45.6%, due to increased renewables generation, with offshore and onshore wind generation at record high levels in January 2018. * (table ET 5.4)

    Highlights for May 2018 compared to April 2018:

    • Petrol prices up 3.7 pence per litre on month, whilst diesel prices up 4.1 pence per litre, driven by the rise in the price of crude oil. (table QEP 4.1.1)

    Energy production and consumption statistics are provided in total and by fuel and provide an analysis of the latest 3 months data compared to the same period a year earlier. Energy price statistics cover domestic price indices, prices of road fuels and petroleum products and comparisons of international road fuel prices.

    Energy production and consumption

    Highlights for the 3 month period February 2020 to April 2020, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 6.5% with a noticeable reduction in petroleum consumption as demand for transport fuels fell due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown from 23 March 2020; sales of the three key transport fuels petrol, diesel and aviation fuel were all at record low levels in April 2020. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 7.9%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 0.7%, with rises in gas, bioenergy, wind, solar and hydro output but falls in output from coal, oil and nuclear. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 5.9%, with coal up 26% but gas down 27%, and renewables up by 25% due to record monthly levels from wind in February 2020 and solar in April 2020. * (table ET 5.4)
    • Renewables provided 43.7% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with gas at 35.1%, nuclear at 17.6% and coal at 2.8%. * (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 9.0 percentage points to a record 3 month high of 61.3%, whilst fossil fuel share of electricity generation stood at a record 3 month low of 38.1%.* (table ET 5.4)

    Energy production and consumption

    Highlights for the 3 month period April to June 2016, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 0.3%, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 1.8% continuing the downward trend. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 3.4%, due to reduced coal output, though both oil and bioenergy production increased. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 0.9%, with coal down 72% but offset by increase in gas up 57%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 50.9% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with nuclear at 24.2%, renewables at 18.1% and coal at a record low of 6.8%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Wind generation by Major Power Producers down 14.5%, with offshore down 9.0% and onshore down 20%, due to lower average wind speeds.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 1.6 percentage points to 42.3%, as rise in bioenergy not enough to offset falls in nuclear and wind generation.* (table ET 5.4)

    Highlights for the 3 month period January to March 2022, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 0.9%, with petroleum consumption increasing as lockdown restrictions have been eased. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 5.3%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 1.1%, UKCS production is increasing following summer 2021 maintenance but remains low. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 2.5%, with gas down 15%, but coal up 2.3%, nuclear up 8.1% and renewables up 7.3% due to more favourable weather conditions, particularly from wind in February 2022. * (table ET 5.4)
    • Renewables provided 42.1% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with gas at 36.8%, nuclear at 17.0% and coal at 3.4%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 5.5 percentage points to 59.1%, whilst fossil fuel share down 5.4 percentage points to 40.3%.* (table ET 5.4)

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 9.4%, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 4.4%. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 0.2%, with rises in oil, bioenergy, wind, solar and hydro output offset by falls in output from coal, gas and nuclear. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 11%, with coal down 81% and gas down 6.4%. Renewables up 15%, boosted by strong growth from all technologies.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 45.0% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 32.8%, nuclear at 19.6% and coal at 2.1%. In March 2019 renewables and wind were at record highs of 37.3% and 26.6% of electricity generation respectively, whilst wind was at a record 3 month high of 23.1% between February and April 2019.* (table ET 5.4)

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 8.4%, with petroleum consumption increasing each month from April 2021 compared to 2020 as lockdown restrictions have been eased. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 4.6%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 20% due to maintenance activities and less favourable weather conditions for renewable technologies. (table ET 1.1)

    • primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 22%, with petroleum consumption increasing month on month since February 2021 as lockdown restrictions have been lifted. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 12%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
    • indigenous energy production fell by 28% to a record 21st century quarterly low level, due to maintenance activities and less favourable weather conditions for renewable technologies. (table ET 1.1)

    Highlights for the 3 month period July to September 2018, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 0.6%, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 1.1%. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production up by 1.9%, with gas, bioenergy, wind and solar output up, but falls in output from all other fuels. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 0.2%, with coal down 14% and gas down 3.2%. Renewables were up 14%, boosted by strong growth in offshore wind and solar generation.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 43.8% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with nuclear at 26.6%, renewables at 26.1% (a record 3 monthly high) and coal at 3.0%.* (table ET 5.4)

    Highlights for the 3 month period June to August 2016, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 1.9%, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 3.4% continuing the downward trend. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production rose by 5.2%, despite the sharp reduction in coal output but with increased UKCS output. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 3.3%, with coal down 77% but offset by increase in gas up 32%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 50.1% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with nuclear at 28.5%, renewables at 16.7% and coal at a record low of 4.6%.* ([table ET 5.4] (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/electricity-section-5-energy-trends))
    • In August 2016 coal consumption by electricity generators was at a record low level, reflecting reduced coal generation capacity following closures, and the conversion of a third unit at Drax from coal to biomass. (table ET 5.4)

    Energy production and consumption statistics are provided in total and by fuel and provide an analysis of the latest 3 months data compared to the same period a year earlier. Energy price statistics cover domestic price indices, prices of road fuels and petroleum products and comparisons of international road fuel prices.

    Energy production and consumption

    Highlights for the 3 month period July to September 2019, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 1.5%, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 0.1%. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 0.4%, with rises in oil, bioenergy, wind, solar and hydro output offset by falls in output from coal, gas and nuclear. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 2.7%, with coal down 61% and gas down 3.1%. Renewables up 22%, boosted by strong growth from wind and hydro.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 43.7% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 32.9%, nuclear at 21.5% and coal at 1.2%. * (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 1.8 percentage points to 54.4%, whilst fossil fuel share of electricity generation stood at a record low of 45.1%.* (table ET 5.4)

    Energy production and consumption

    Highlights for the 3 month period April 2020 to June 2020, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 22% with a noticeable reduction in petroleum consumption as demand for transport fuels fell due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown from 23 March 2020; low sales of transport fuels contributed to an overall record low of monthly energy consumption in May 2020. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 17%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
    • Indigenous energy production up by 3.1%, with rises in gas, bioenergy, wind, solar and hydro output but falls in output from coal, oil and nuclear. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 14%, with coal down 20% due to no coal burnt in Great Britain from 10 April until 16 June 2020 and gas down 33%, whilst renewables up by 15%. * (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 38.6% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 38.5%, nuclear at 21.4% and coal at 0.7%. * (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 10.8 percentage points to 59.9%, whilst fossil fuel share of electricity generation stood at 39.4%.* (table ET 5.4)

    Highlights for the 3 month period December 2015 to February 2016, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 7.3%, with average temperatures 1.9 degrees Celsius warmer than a year earlier. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 3.6% continuing the downward trend. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production rose by 7.7%, boosted by increased UK Continental Shelf and low carbon production. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 5.5%, with coal down 49% but offset by increases in gas up 33% and renewables up 17.8%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 35.3% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 24.1%, nuclear at 21.7% and coal at 18.8%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Wind generation by Major Power Producers up 13.7%, with record levels for total and offshore wind generation in December 2015.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 5.7 percentage points to 45.8%, due to rises in renewables, particularly bioenergy and offshore wind, generation.* (table ET 5.4)

Highlights for the 3 month period January to March 2018, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

  • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 4.0% driven by the colder weather in February and March 2018, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 0.2%. (table ET 1.2)
  • Indigenous energy production fell by 0.9%, with oil and renewables output up but gas and nuclear output down. (table ET 1.1)
  • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 1.0%, with coal down 16.4% and gas down 2.2%.* (table ET 5.4)
  • Gas provided 43.6% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 25.7%, nuclear at 19.9% and coal at 10.9%.* (table ET 5.4)
  • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 2.5 percentage points to 45.6%, due to increased renewables generation, with offshore and onshore wind generation at record high levels in January 2018. * (table ET 5.4)
