• Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 2.3%, with petroleum consumption increasing as lockdown restrictions eased. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 3.9%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
• Indigenous energy production rose by 21%, boosted by strong growth in UKCS production. (table ET 1.1)

• Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 12% with a noticeable reduction in petroleum consumption as demand for transport fuels fell due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown from 23 March 2020; however consumption of transport fuels has grown steadily since May 2020 as restrictions have been lifted. Energy production and consumption

Highlights for the 3 month period September 2020 to November 2020, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

• Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 13% with a noticeable reduction in petroleum consumption as demand for transport fuels fell due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 12%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
• Indigenous energy production down by 12% due mainly to maintenance activities, with falls in all fuels except wind, solar and hydro. (table ET 1.1)
• Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 4.9%, with coal down 52% and gas down 7.6%, but renewables up 9.4% due to increased capacity and more favourable weather conditions.* (table ET 5.4)
• Gas provided 42.0% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 37.3%, nuclear at 18.8% and coal at 1.3%.* (table ET 5.4)
• Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 2.5 percentage points to 56.1%, whilst fossil fuel share of electricity generation stood at 43.5%.* (table ET 5.4)

Highlights for the 3 month period August 2021 to October 2021, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

• Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 2.3%, with petroleum consumption increasing each month from April 2021 compared to 2020 as lockdown restrictions have been eased. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 4.6%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
• Indigenous energy production fell by 2.8%, but with UKCS production returning to more normal levels following maintenance, whilst renewables output remained low due to less favourable weather conditions. (table ET 1.1)
• Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 6.7%, with coal up sharply but gas down 10% in the last 3 months, whilst nuclear down 9.0% due to outages and renewables down 5.3% due to less favourable weather (mainly wind) conditions. * (table ET 5.4)
• Gas provided 43.4% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 36.1%, nuclear at 17.5% and coal at 2.0%.* (table ET 5.4)
• Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers was unchanged at 53.5%, whilst fossil fuel share of electricity generation stood at 45.8%.* (table ET 5.4)

Highlights for the 3 month period July 2020 to September 2020, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

• Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 12% with a noticeable reduction in petroleum consumption as demand for transport fuels fell due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown from 23 March 2020; however consumption of transport fuels has grown steadily since May 2020 as restrictions have been lifted. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by nearly 10%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
• Indigenous energy production down by 5.9%, with falls in coal, oil, gas, nuclear and hydro output more than offsetting rises in output from bioenergy, wind and solar. (table ET 1.1)
• Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 0.8%, with coal down 28% due to no coal burnt in Great Britain until mid-August, but gas up 6.1% and renewables up by 3.2%.* (table ET 5.4)
• Gas provided 46.7% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 34.3%, nuclear at 17.5% and coal at 0.9%.* (table ET 5.4)
• Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 2.7 percentage points to 51.8%, whilst fossil fuel share of electricity generation stood at 47.7%.* (table ET 5.4)
