    Description

    Energy production and consumption statistics are provided in total and by fuel and provide an analysis of the latest 3 months data compared to the same period a year earlier. Energy price statistics cover domestic price indices, prices of road fuels and petroleum products and comparisons of international road fuel prices.

    Energy production and consumption

    Highlights for the 3 month period May to July 2022, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 2.3%, with petroleum consumption increasing as lockdown restrictions eased. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 3.9%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
    • Indigenous energy production rose by 21%, boosted by strong growth in UKCS production. (table ET 1.1)
    • Gas exports up significantly; the UK has been playing a key role in supplying gas to Europe as it looks to move away from Russian gas. (table ET 4.3)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 15%, with coal down 27%, but gas up 14%, nuclear up 13% and renewables up 19% due to increased capacity and more favourable weather conditions.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 48.2 of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 31.6%, nuclear at 18.4% and coal at 1.1%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 1.0 percentage points to 50.0%, whilst fossil fuel share down 0.9 percentage points to 49.4%.* (table ET 5.4)

    Energy production and consumption

    Highlights for the 3 month period February to April 2022, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 1.6%, with petroleum consumption increasing as lockdown restrictions have been eased. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 5.3%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
    • Indigenous energy production rose by 5.1%, UKCS production is increasing following summer 2021 maintenance but remains low. (table ET 1.1)
    • Gas exports up significantly; the UK has been playing a key role in supplying gas to Europe as it looks to move away from Russian gas. (table ET 4.3)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 0.4%, with gas down 16%, but coal up 55%, nuclear up 14% and renewables up 10% due to increased capacity and more favourable weather conditions.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Renewables provided 41.5% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with gas at 37.2%, nuclear at 17.7% and coal at 2.9%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 6.1 percentage points to 59.2%, whilst fossil fuel share down 6.1 percentage points to 40.3%.* (table ET 5.4)

    Energy production and consumption

    Highlights for the 3 month period August 2020 to October 2020, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 12% with a noticeable reduction in petroleum consumption as demand for transport fuels fell due to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown from 23 March 2020; however consumption of transport fuels has grown steadily since May 2020 as restrictions have been lifted. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption also fell by 12%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
    • Indigenous energy production down by 11%, with falls in all fuels except offshore wind and solar. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 2.4%, with coal down 40%, but gas up 6.9% to cover shortfall from bioenergy and nuclear, whilst renewables down by 0.2%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 44.9% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 35.6%, nuclear at 17.9% and coal at 1.0%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 3.3 percentage points to 53.5%, whilst fossil fuel share of electricity generation stood at 46.0%.* (table ET 5.4)

    • Gas provided 42.0% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 37.3%, nuclear at 18.8% and coal at 1.3%.* (table ET 5.4)

    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 6.7%, with coal up sharply but gas down 10% in the last 3 months, whilst nuclear down 9.0% due to outages and renewables down 5.3% due to less favourable weather (mainly wind) conditions. * (table ET 5.4)

    Highlights for the 3 month period January to March 2018, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 4.0% driven by the colder weather in February and March 2018, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 0.2%. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 0.9%, with oil and renewables output up but gas and nuclear output down. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 1.0%, with coal down 16.4% and gas down 2.2%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 43.6% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 25.7%, nuclear at 19.9% and coal at 10.9%.* (table ET 5.4)

    • Indigenous energy production rose by 0.1%, with increased low carbon output. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 0.3%, with coal down 61% but offset by increase in gas up 40%.* (table ET 5.4)

    Energy production and consumption statistics are provided in total and by fuel, and provide an analysis of the latest 3 months data compared to the same period a year earlier. Energy price statistics cover domestic price indices, prices of road fuels and petroleum products and comparisons of international road fuel prices.

    Energy production and consumption

    Highlights for the 3 month period July to September 2018, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 0.6%, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 1.1%. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production up by 1.9%, with gas, bioenergy, wind and solar output up, but falls in output from all other fuels. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 0.2%, with coal down 14% and gas down 3.2%. Renewables were up 14%, boosted by strong growth in offshore wind and solar generation.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 43.8% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with nuclear at 26.6%, renewables at 26.1% (a record 3 monthly high) and coal at 3.0%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 1.9 percentage points to a record 3 monthly high of 52.7%.* (table ET 5.4)

    Highlights for November 2018 compared to October 2018:

    • Petrol prices down 1.9 pence per litre on month, whilst diesel prices up 0.5 pence per litre. (table QEP 4.1.1)

    Energy production and consumption

    Highlights for the 3 month period March to May 2016, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis was broadly unchanged, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 1.1% continuing the downward trend. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 2.7%, despite increased oil and bioenergy production. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 1.9%, with coal down 66% but offset by increase in gas up 68%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 48.3% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with nuclear at 22.2%, renewables at 19.2% and coal at a record low of 10.3%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Wind generation by Major Power Producers down 15.0%, with offshore down 5.5% and onshore down 24%, due to lower average wind speeds.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 0.9 percentage points to 41.4%, as rise in bioenergy not enough to offset falls in nuclear and wind generation.* (table ET 5.4)

    Highlights for the 3 month period April to June 2016, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis fell by 0.3%, on a temperature adjusted basis consumption fell by 1.8% continuing the downward trend. (table ET 1.2)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 3.4%, due to reduced coal output, though both oil and bioenergy production increased. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 0.9%, with coal down 72% but offset by increase in gas up 57%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 50.9% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with nuclear at 24.2%, renewables at 18.1% and coal at a record low of 6.8%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Wind generation by Major Power Producers down 14.5%, with offshore down 9.0% and onshore down 20%, due to lower average wind speeds.* (table ET 5.4)

    Energy production and consumption

    Highlights for the 3 month period May 2021 to July 2021, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

    • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 19%, with petroleum consumption increasing month on month since February 2021 as lockdown restrictions have been lifted. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 12%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
    • Indigenous energy production fell by 26% to a record 21st century 3 monthly low level, due to maintenance activities and less favourable weather conditions for renewable technologies. (table ET 1.1)
    • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 2.3%, with coal up sharply in July 2021 and gas up 20% in the last 3 months to meet shortfall from renewables down 16% due to less favourable weather conditions and nuclear down 6.9% due to outages.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Gas provided 48.2% of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 30.4%, nuclear at 18.7% and coal at 1.8%.* (table ET 5.4)
    • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers down 8.6 percentage points to 49.1%, whilst fossil fuel share of electricity generation stood at 50.3%.* (table ET 5.4)

Energy production and consumption

Highlights for the 3 month period May to July 2022, compared to the same period a year earlier include:

  • Primary energy consumption in the UK on a fuel input basis rose by 2.3%, with petroleum consumption increasing as lockdown restrictions eased. On a temperature adjusted basis consumption rose by 3.9%. (table ET 1.2) and (table ET 3.13)
  • Indigenous energy production rose by 21%, boosted by strong growth in UKCS production. (table ET 1.1)
  • Gas exports up significantly; the UK has been playing a key role in supplying gas to Europe as it looks to move away from Russian gas. (table ET 4.3)
  • Electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 15%, with coal down 27%, but gas up 14%, nuclear up 13% and renewables up 19% due to increased capacity and more favourable weather conditions.* (table ET 5.4)
  • Gas provided 48.2 of electricity generation by Major Power Producers, with renewables at 31.6%, nuclear at 18.4% and coal at 1.1%.* (table ET 5.4)
  • Low carbon share of electricity generation by Major Power Producers up 1.0 percentage points to 50.0%, whilst fossil fuel share down 0.9 percentage points to 49.4%.* (table ET 5.4)
