    The latest national statistics on fires, casualties, false alarms and non-fire incidents attended by the fire and rescue services in England, produced by the Department for Communities and Local Government, were released on Friday 24 June 2011 under the auspices of the UK Statistics Authority.

    Statistics in this release focus on April 2010 to March 2011. The main points of the data are summarised below.

    Fatal and non-fatal casualties

    • between April 2010 and March 2011 there were 321 fire fatalities; 15 (4%) fewer than in 2009 to 2010
    • accidental dwelling fires fatalities, which account for 2/3 of all fire fatalities, were down by one from 213 in 2009 to 2010 to 212 in 2010 to 2011
    • in 2010 to 2011, the number of non-fatal casualties (excluding precautionary checks) from fires rose by 2% to 7,400 from 7,300 in 2009 to 2010

    Incidents

    • in England, fire and rescue services attended 499,000 fire and false alarm incidents in 2010 to 2011, a 5% decrease on 2009 to 2010
    • total fires fell by 6% to 227,000
    • dwelling fires fell by 5% to 36,000, and fires in other buildings were down by 6% to 21,000; road vehicle fires fell by 16% to 28,000
    • attendances at false alarms decreased by 5% to 272,000; within this, there was a 13% fall (to 11,000) in malicious false alarms and a 5% fall (to 185,000) in false alarms due to apparatus
    • fire and rescue services attended 134,000 non-fire incidents in 2010 to 2011, down 6% from 2009 to 2010; the largest categories were: road traffic collisions (22%), water removal (12%), lift release (12%), and effecting entry (12%)

    Statistics in this release focus on April 2009 to March 2010. The main points of the data are summarised below.

    Fatal and non-fatal casualties

    • between April 2009 and March 2010 there were 328 fatalities; 5 (1.5%) more than in 2008 to 2009
    • accidental dwelling fires fatalities, which account for almost 2/3 of all fire fatalities, were up by one from 209 in 2008 to 2009 to 210 to 2009 to 2010
    • in 2009 to 2010, the number of non-fatal casualties from fires fell by 8% to 8,500 from 9,200 in 2008 to 2009

    Fire incident types

    • in England the fire and rescue services attended 527,000 fire and false alarm incidents in 2009 to 2010, 6% fewer than in 2008 to 2009
    • total fires fell by 3% to 242,000
    • dwelling fires were unchanged at 39,000 and fires in other buildings were down by 1% to 22,000; road vehicle fires fell by 12% to 32,000
    • attendances at false alarms decreased by 9% to 285,000; within this there was a 27% fall (to 17,000) in malicious false alarms and a 7% fall (to 193,000) in false alarms due to apparatus
    • fire and rescue services attended 143,000 non-fire incidents in 2009 to 2010, down 8% from 2008 to 2009; the largest categories were: road traffic collisions (24%), lift release (14%), effecting entry (11%), and water removal (11%)

    Statistics in this release focus on the period of 1 April to 2011 to 31 March 2012. The main points of the data are summarised below.

    Fatal and non-fatal casualties

    • in 2011 to 2012 there were 304 fire fatalities, 27 fewer than in 2010 to 2011
    • accidental dwelling fires fatalities, which account for 3/5 of all fire fatalities, were down by 26 from 213 in 2010 to 2011 to 187 in 2011 to 2012
    • there were 4,277 non-fatal fire casualties (excluding first aid cases and where only a precautionary checks was recommended), 2% lower than in 2010 to 2011

    Incidents

    • in England, fire and rescue services attended 223,000 fires, 2% lower than in 2010 to 2011
    • dwelling fires were 4% lower at 35,000, and fires in other buildings were down by 2% to 20,000; road vehicle fires fell by 14% to 24,000
    • attendances at fire false alarms decreased by 9% to 249,000; more than 2/3 of these were due to apparatus, while 4% were malicious false alarms
    • fire and rescue services attended 133,000 non-fire incidents in 2011 to 2012, down 9% from 2010 to 2011; the most common categories of non-fire incidents were: road traffic collisions (21%), effecting entry (11%), lift releases (11%), flooding (9%) and medical incidents (9%)

    • accidental dwelling fires fatalities, which account for almost 2/3 of all fire fatalities, were down by 10 from 98 in April to September 2009 to 88 in April to September 2010
    • in the 6 months from April to September 2010, there were 4,300 non-fatal casualties from fires 3% higher than in April to September 2009, though 33% lower than in April to September 2000

    Fire incident types

    • in England, fire and rescue services attended 289,000 fire and false alarm incidents in the 6 months from April to September 2010, a 6% decrease on April to September 2009
    • total fires fell by 3% to 136,000
    • dwelling fires were unchanged at 19,000, and fires in other buildings were down by 6% to 29,000; road vehicle fires fell by 16% to 15,000
    • attendances at false alarms decreased by 8% to 137,000; wthin this, there was a 19% fall (to 5,500) in malicious false alarms and a 7% fall (to 92,000) in false alarms due to apparatus
    • fire and rescue services attended 66,000 non-fire incidents in 2009 to 2010, down 9% from April to September 2009; the largest categories were: road traffic collisions (22%), lift release (13%), effecting entry (13%), and water removal (9%)

    Statistics in this release focus on 1 April to 30 September 2011. The main points of the data are summarised below.

    Fatal and non-fatal casualties

    • between April and September 2011 there were 149 fire fatalities; 2 fewer than in April to September 2010
    • accidental dwelling fires fatalities, which account for three fifths of all fire fatalities, were down by four from 91 in April to September 2010 to 87 in April to September 2011
    • there were 2,120 non-fatal fire casualties (excluding first aid cases). This was 2% higher than in April 2010 to September 2010

    Incidents

    • in England, fire and rescue services attended 322,000 fire and false alarm incidents in April to September 2011, 7% lower than in April 2010 to September 2010
    • total fires fell by 4% to 131,000
    • dwelling fires fell by 2% to 17,000, and fires in other buildings were down by 2% to 11,000; road vehicle fires fell by 13% to 13,000
    • attendances at false alarms decreased by 10% to 129,000; 2/3 of these related to automatic apparatus, while 4% were malicious false alarms
    • fire and rescue services attended 62,500 non-fire incidents in April 2011 to September 2011, down 6% from April 2010 to September 2010; the most common categories of non-fire incidents were: road traffic collisions (23%), effecting entry (13%) and lift releases (12%)

    Deliberate fires

    • there were 71,000 deliberate fires in April to September 2011, 4% lower than in April to September 2010
    • the publication includes analysis of the number of deliberate fires in areas affected by the disorder in August 2011; by comparing to typical numbers of deliberate fires in preceding weeks, this shows that there were several hundred more attendances at deliberate fires recorded in total across the period of disorder in those areas
