All banks' highest CO2 emissions were from scope 2 - indirect GHG emissions (location-based). The Chinese bank's scope 2 emissions in 2022 was 1.9 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
According to environmental reports on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the world’s largest banks, four Chinese banks reported the highest emissions in 2023. The Agricultural Bank of China had the largest total, with more than two million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. It was followed by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. Among non-Chinese banks, JPMorgan Chase reported the highest GHG emissions, at just over one million tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
