This comprehensive report chronicles the history of women in the military and as Veterans, profiles the characteristics of women Veterans in 2009, illustrates how women Veterans in 2009 utilized some of the major benefits and services offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and discusses the future of women Veterans in relation to VA. The goal of this report is to gain an understanding of who our women Veterans are, how their military service affects their post-military lives, and how they can be better served based on these insights.

The 2010 National Survey of Veterans (NSV) is the sixth in a series of comprehensive nationwide surveys designed to help the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) plan its future programs and services for Veterans. It also provides a snapshot profile of the Veteran population. Data collected through the NSV enables VA to: follow changing trends in the Veteran population; compare characteristics of Veterans who use VA benefits and services with those of Veterans who do not; study VA�s role in the delivery of all benefits and services that Veterans receive; and update information about Veterans to help the Department develop its policies.

Services and Support Programs for Military Service Members and Veterans, 2012-13 (PEQIS 19), is a study that is part of the Postsecondary Education Quick Information System (PEQIS) program; program data is available since 1997-98 at . PEQIS 19 (https://nces.ed.gov/peqis/) is a cross-sectional survey that collected information on the services and support programs available to students who are military service members and veterans at the institution. The study was conducted using self-administered paper-and-pencil questionnaires of a person at the postsecondary institution that is familiar with the institution programs for military service members and veterans. Key statistics produced from PEQIS 19 were services and support programs for military members and veterans.

In 2023, a survey of members of the Wounded Warrior Project found that about 76.5 percent of U.S. veteran and active service survey respondents who incurred a physical or mental injury, illness, or wound while serving in the military on or after September 11, 2001 stated they have experienced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The VHA Support Service Center Capital Assets Databases is a web based project application and tracking database. This is used for capital project application submissions and capital project tracking for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Minor, Clinical Specific Initiative (CSI) and Non-recurring Maintenance (NRM) Programs. Annually, VHA Facilities enter project applications. Monthly, the VHA facilities update the schedule and cost information for approved projects.

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides official estimates and projections of the Veteran population using the Veteran Population Projection Model (VetPop). Based on the latest model VetPop2020 and the most recent national survey estimates from the 2022 American Community Survey 1-Year data, the projected number of Veterans living in 50 states, DC and Puerto Rico for fiscal year 2023, is allocated to Urban and Rural areas. As defined by the Census Bureau, those not residing in Urban areas are assumed to be in Rural areas (https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/geography/guidance/geo-areas/urban-rural/2010-urban-rural.html).

Patient appointment information is obtained from the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture Scheduling module. The Patient Appointment Information application gathers appointment data to be loaded into a national database for statistical reporting. Patient appointments are scanned from September 1, 2002 to the present, and appointment data meeting specified criteria are transmitted to the Austin Information Technology Center Patient Appointment Information Transmission (PAIT) national database. Subsequent transmissions (bi-monthly) update PAIT bi-monthly via Health Level Seven message transmissions through Vitria Interface Engine (VIE) connections. A Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) program in Austin utilizes PAIT data to create a bi-monthly SAS dataset on the Austin mainframe. This additional data is used to supplement the existing Clinic Appointment Wait Time and Clinic Utilization extracts created by the Veterans Health Administration Support Service Center (VSSC).
The VIERS Military History service provides Veteran military history information that is consolidated across multiple data sources. This consolidated data is provided as part of the VRM initiative to improve the speed, accuracy and efficiency with which information is exchanged between Veterans and VA. This information is exposed to the VIERS Consumers via a SOAP based web service. It queries the VA/DoD Identity Repository (VADIR) and Corporate Database (CorpDB) repositories to retrieves electronic copies of military service information including periods of service, periods of captivity, and military pay. The VRM VIERS Military History Service also provides the capability to update the VA data repositories with unverified periods of service and unverified periods of captivity. Service provides a view of all military history to date(historical, current, retirement, Line of Duty/WII) for a partiular person such as branch, entry dates, separation dates, discharge characters.
