TwitterIn the years 2007-2009, a national survey took place for the first time with the recording of vineyard genetic resources in Germany, which recorded the exact quantity ratios of the grape varieties of the various wine-growing regions. On the basis of grid cells in the size of 10 km x 10 km, the number of grape varieties grown in the vine is shown. The number of recorded number of vines per grid cell is also included in the data. The survey was funded by the BLE with funds from the BMEL. The results of the recording of vineyard genetic resources in Germany were published in 2010 and form the basis of Deutsche Genbank Reben, which is an essential tool for safeguarding vineyard genetic resources in Germany.

In the last five years, the wine production industry has developed negatively, with industry sales falling by an average of 2% per year since 2020. The background to this development was a decline in consumer wine consumption, which was also driven by changes in social consumer behaviour and demographic change. Private households suffered a loss of purchasing power due to the tense macroeconomic situation over long periods between 2020 and 2025, which was characterised by high inflation and rising living costs, particularly between 2021 and 2023. At the same time, the earnings situation of industry players was increasingly burdened by higher energy costs over time and the rising minimum wage. They were only able to pass on these additional costs to a limited extent due to intense international competition and the strong purchasing power of retailers in Germany. In 2025, wine producers' sales are likely to increase slightly compared to the previous year. Even if consumers are currently paying more attention to their spending again and the volume sold is likely to fall, the real wage increases of the past year should provide scope for an adjustment in sales prices. IBISWorld expects turnover in this sector to increase by 0.1% year-on-year to 3.7 billion euros. In the next five years, turnover in the wine production industry is likely to show little dynamic growth due to the expected further reduction in wine consumption among the population. IBISWorld forecasts an average annual decline in turnover of 0.1% for this period, meaning that industry turnover should amount to 3.7 billion euros in 2030. Under these circumstances, the number of players in the market and the area under cultivation is likely to decrease. By focussing on the high-margin premium segment of Prädikat wines and products such as non-alcoholic or organically produced wine, the profitability of the remaining industry players is likely to improve minimally over the next five years.
