There doesn't exist many public datasets out there with high quality annotations for volleyball actions (i.e. set, receive, serve, etc.). Of those that do exist, they are of mainly high level professional play which don't necessarily translate to the vast majority of volleyball players in the world, players who don't have perfect setting form and players who can't get multiple feet over the net during a block. This dataset exists to equalize this disparity.
TLDR - a volleyball actions dataset representative of a lower level of play/more casual volleyball.
Most of these annotations come from B/BB/A level league VODS, and are actively being worked on and added to.

The Volleyball Activity Dataset is a collection of annotated volleyball video sequences captured from professional matches in the Austrian Volley League (season 2011/12). The dataset contains 6 videos with HD resolution (1920x1080) at 25 frames per second, encoded using the DX50 codec. It includes 7 activity classes: 'Serve', 'Reception', 'Setting', 'Attack', 'Block', 'Stand', 'Defense/Move'
Serve: The action of serving the ball to initiate a rally. Reception: The action of receiving the served ball. Setting: The action of accurately positioning the ball for an attacker. Attack: The action of hitting or spiking the ball towards the opponent's court. Block: The action of intercepting the opponent's attack at the net. Stand: The class representing a player's static position or standing. Defense/Move: The class representing defensive movements or general player movements.

The dataset focuses on annotating volleyball actions for the purpose of action detection in sports videos. The aim is to detect different volleyball plays and the ball itself. The classes are defined as follows: - volleyball-actions: General category for any recognizable volleyball action. - Attack: Offensive play typically involving hitting the ball to the opposing court. - Block: Defensive play aimed at stopping or altering an opponent's attack at the net. - Defense: Any action focused on preventing the ball from hitting the ground on the team's side. - Serve: The action of putting the ball into play with a serve. - Set: Control action used to set up an attack play. - ball: The volleyball itself.
This class applies to any recognizable volleyball-related action, encompassing diverse volleyball movements and gestures.
Annotate this class whenever a general volleyball action is occurring but is not distinctly categorized as any specific action such as Attack, Block, Defense, Serve, or Set. Ensure that the bounding box encapsulates the full extent of the player’s body and movement within the court.
An offensive play, where a player attempts to hit the ball over the net into the opponent's court.
Focus on the player making the attacking hit. The bounding box should encompass the player from head to toe, including their extended arm and any visible part of the ball in motion.
This involves players reaching above the net to stop an attack.
Encompass all players attempting to block with an extended arm positioning above the net. Include the upper body, arms, and any part of the ball that interacts with the block.
Defensive actions prevent the ball from touching the court. This can include diving, rolling, or quick reactions to save the ball.
Highlight players in defensive stances or actions such as diving or lunging toward the ball. The annotation should capture the player in motion, covering the full body and the ball if it is within reach.
Action of initiating play, where a player delivers the ball over the net to start the game.
Capture the serving player with a focus on the arm used for serving, extending from the body with the ball positioned above or in front of them at varying stages of the serve action.
A precision action used to prepare an attack, typically involving an upward volley.
Identify players in the setting position, emphasizing their hands close to or above their heads, poised to direct the ball towards an attacker. Surround the full body, focusing particularly on the player's hands and the ball if present.
The spherical ball used in volleyball games.
Annotate the ball wherever visible, creating a bounding box tightly around its borders. This should be done regardless of its position on the court, whether in a player’s possession or airborne.
