    Description

The Northeast Community, also known as the East End, was founded by formerly enslaved African Americans after the Civil War and today retains its identity as a predominantly African American neighborhood distinguished by its lifelong residents and rich heritage. This map depicts the planning area designated by the 2007 and 2021 Northeast Neighborhood Plan. The Town of Wake Forest in partnership with the community is updating the plan in 2020-21 to guide the future of the neighborhood.Over its history, the community has been home to several individuals and institutions significant to the Town of Wake Forest. Interestingly, many residents were involved with the evolution of African American education in North Carolina. Notable among these individuals are Allen Young, founder of the Wake Forest Normal and Industrial School, and his daughter Ailey Mae Young (pictured right) , long-time Wake county school teacher and first African American woman to serve on the Wake Forest Board of Commissioners.
