The Warner Bros. Discovery company generated 5.01 billion U.S. dollars in revenue from its networks segment in the third quarter of 2024, while the studios division brought in 2.68 billion dollars in revenue at that time. Warner Bros. Discovery came to be in April 2022, thanks to the merger of Discovery Inc. with WarnerMedia. Warner Bros Discovery segments and operations The media company divides its operations into three segments. The networks division focuses on national and international television operations. The studios segment is responsible for the production and distribution of films for theaters as well as production and licensing of television programs. The last segment, direct-to-consumer provides premium pay TV and streaming services. In 2023 the networks segment accounted for the largest share of Warner Bros Discovery’s revenue. All in all, the company’s distribution and advertising are the two biggest sources of revenue, accounting for more than 70 percent of its revenue. Warner Bros Discovery film business The Studios segment of the Warner Bros Discovery company offers movie and TV programming production and distribution. The most recent releases associated with the studio division were ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’, ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’, ‘Black Adam’, and ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’, to name just a few. During the 2024 Academy Awards the company ranked fifth in terms of Oscar nominations for their productions. In 2024, Warner Bros’ box office revenue in the U.S and Canada reached 1.16 billion dollars. Still, after the merger and restructuring, the studio has a long way to go to reach the pre-pandemic revenue levels not to mention surpassing the record-high of 2.1 billion from 2009.
As of the year ending December 2021, HBO had earned around 7.7 billion U.S. dollars from subscription revenue alone, up from 6.09 billion in the previous year. Recent changes in the company’s ownership structure and method of reporting have meant that these numbers are somewhat difficult to directly compare to those recorded for previous years. HBO is a division of WarnerMedia Entertainment (formerly Time Warner, which was acquired by AT&T in 2018).
HBO's success HBO is a successful cable network which produces many of its own original series and documentaries in addition screening pay-per-view sporting events, comedy specials, and feature films. The network has produced some of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows in television history through titles like ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘The Wire’, ‘The Sopranos’, and ‘Band of Brothers’. HBO has accumulated hundreds of Primetime Emmy nominations in the past few years and often ranks at the very top in terms of awards won.
On-demand services In addition to its groundbreaking content, the company has also been quick to upgrade its platform to meet the changing demands of consumers. As of 2021 the company’s subscription video-on-demand service, HBO Max, had accumulated nearly 80 million global viewers, establishing itself among the biggest names in the SVOD market.
In 2023, Verizon Communications generated 101.6 billion U.S. dollars in its consumer segment, more than three times the amount generated in its business segment. Effective April 1, 2019, there are two reportable segments that Verizon operates and manages as strategic business units under the new structure - Verizon Consumer Group (Consumer) and Verizon Business Group (Business).
Verizon Communications’ segments
The previous Wireless segment (Verizon Wireless) provides wireless communications products and services on a postpaid and prepaid basis in the United States. The previous Wireline segment provides corporate networking solutions and security and managed network services around the world, for example. The new Consumer segment provides consumer-focused wireless and wireline communications services and products. The new Business segment provides wireless and wireline communications services and products, video and data services, corporate networking solutions, security and managed network services, local and long distance voice services and network access to deliver various Internet of Things (IoT) services and products. The smallest segment – Corporate and Other – stays unchanged after the restructuring and includes the results from subsidiaries, such as Verizon Media and Verizon Connect, as well as historical results from divested businesses.
Verizon’s revenue and subscribers
Verizon Communications’ total operating revenue amounted to around 134 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. This made the company the largest telecommunications operator in the United States by revenue, with AT&T having seen its revenue fall with the spin-off of its interests in WarnerMedia. As of the first quarter of 2024, Verizon accounted for over 37 percent of U.S. mobile subscriptions.
As of December 2024, the telecommunications company AT&T had around 141 thousand employees, a sharp decrease from the previous year. AT&T on cost-cutting trend AT&T's workforce has declined year-on-year since 2019, with a 40 percent reduction through to January 2024. In 2020, AT&T's CEO, John Stankey, committed the operator to finding six billion U.S. dollars in savings by 2023, with a reduction in labor costs listed as a key target. In Spring 2023, the operator announced further measures in the form of office closures across the country, with a new policy requiring certain management staff to attend an office at least three times a week. While these measures did not include layoffs, AT&T stated that the new requirements may spur employees to seek opportunities elsewhere. Moreover, the company's 2022 decision to spin off its interest in the media company WarnerMedia significantly reduced its workforce by over 20 percent. AT&T’s revenue AT&T is a leader in the wireless telecommunications sector, servicing the most wireless subscriptions among U.S. operators. Despite this, the company faces strong competition from rival network operators Verizon and T-Mobile US, particularly in the 5G space. AT&T ranked second in U.S. 5G coverage in 2024, and third in typical 5G download speeds. T-Mobile US held the top spot in both metrics, having invested heavily in its 5G network in an attempt to challenge AT&T and Verizon.
