    Important Note: This item is in mature support as of June 2021 and is no longer updated.

    This map presents land cover and detailed topographic maps for the United States. It uses the USA Topographic Map service. The map includes the National Park Service (NPS) Natural Earth physical map at 1.24km per pixel for the world at small scales, i-cubed eTOPO 1:250,000-scale maps for the contiguous United States at medium scales, and National Geographic TOPO! 1:100,000 and 1:24,000-scale maps (1:250,000 and 1:63,000 in Alaska) for the United States at large scales. The TOPO! maps are seamless, scanned images of United States Geological Survey (USGS) paper topographic maps.

    The maps provide a very useful basemap for a variety of applications, particularly in rural areas where the topographic maps provide unique detail and features from other basemaps.

    Description

    This digital terrain model represents historical elevations along the valley of the North Fork Toutle River upstream of its confluence with the Green River in Cowlitz and Skamania Counties, Washington. Most elevations were derived from U.S. Geological Survey 1:62,500 scale topographic quadrangle maps published from 1953 to 1958 that were derived from aerial photographs taken in 1951 and 1952. Elevations representing the bed of Spirit Lake, at the head of the valley, were derived from a bathymetric map based on survey data from 1974. Elevations are in units of meters and have been adjusted to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988.

    Description

    This part of USGS Data Series 935 (Cochrane, 2014) presents bathymetry and topography data for the Offshore of Seattle, California, map area, a part of the Southern Salish Sea Habitat Map Series. The data for this map area are a combination of topography extracted from a pre-existing Digital Elevation Model (DEM) merged with bathymetry data that were collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) using multibeam sonar systems. The merged data are available for download in a single zip file (BathyTopo_OffshoreSeattle.zip).

    Ecology created the GIS statewide river mile point layer in March 2007 by digitizing the river mile points depicted on the USGS 7½ minute (24k) topographic quadrangle maps. Some of the rivers have gaps in the river mile progression because several of the quadrangle maps do not have any river mile points, while a few were missing a point or two.In November 2014 Ecology added river mile points for the missing areas using Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's (WDFW) 1975 Stream Catalog, which only covers WRIA's 1 through 24. The Stream Catalog shows river miles for nearly every stream; however, only those water courses that have river miles from the USGS quadrangle maps were added.The field SOURCE denotes the source of the data point, USGS or WDFW. Discrepancies between the USGS and WDFW are documented in the Supplemental Information section.

    Description

    These data are part of a larger USGS project to develop an updated geospatial database of mines, mineral deposits and mineral regions in the United States. Mine and prospect-related symbols, such as those used to represent prospect pits, mines, adits, dumps, tailings, etc., hereafter referred to as â mineâ symbols or features, are currently being digitized on a state-by-state basis from the 7.5-minute (1:24,000-scale) and the 15-minute (1:48,000 and 1:62,500-scale) archive of the USGS Historical Topographic Maps Collection, or acquired from available databases (California and Nevada, 1:24,000-scale only). Compilation of these features is the first phase in capturing accurate locations and general information about features related to mineral resource exploration and extraction across the U.S. To date, the compilation of 500,000-plus point and polygon mine symbols from approximately 67,000 maps of 22 western states has been completed: Arizona (AZ), Arkansas (AR), California (CA), Colorado (CO), Idaho (ID), Iowa (IA), Kansas (KS), Louisiana (LA), Minnesota (MN), Missouri (MO), Montana (MT), North Dakota (ND), Nebraska (NE), New Mexico (NM), Nevada (NV), Oklahoma (OK), Oregon (OR), South Dakota (SD), Texas (TX), Utah (UT), Washington (WA), and Wyoming (WY). The process renders not only a more complete picture of exploration and mining in the western U.S., but an approximate time line of when these activities occurred. The data may be used for land use planning, assessing abandoned mine lands and mine-related environmental impacts, assessing the value of mineral resources from Federal, State and private lands, and mapping mineralized areas and systems for input into the land management process. The data are presented as three groups of layers based on the scale of the source maps. No reconciliation between the data groups was done.

    Description

    This is a tiled collection of the 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) and is one meter resolution. The 3DEP data holdings serve as the elevation layer of The National Map, and provide foundational elevation information for earth science studies and mapping applications in the United States. Scientists and resource managers use 3DEP data for hydrologic modeling, resource monitoring, mapping and visualization, and many other applications. The elevations in this DEM represent the topographic bare-earth surface. USGS standard one-meter DEMs are produced exclusively from high resolution light detection and ranging (lidar) source data of one-meter or higher resolution. One-meter DEM surfaces are seamless within collection projects, but, not necessarily seamless across projects. The spatial reference used for tiles of the one-meter DEM within the conterminous United States (CONUS) is Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) in units of meters, and in conformance with the North American Datum of 1983 ...

    NCED is currently involved in researching the effectiveness of anaglyph maps in the classroom and are working with educators and scientists to interpret various Earth-surface processes. Based on the findings of the research, various activities and interpretive information will be developed and available for educators to use in their classrooms. Keep checking back with this website because activities and maps are always being updated. We believe that anaglyph maps are an important tool in helping students see the world and are working to further develop materials and activities to support educators in their use of the maps.

    This website has various 3-D maps and supporting materials that are available for download. Maps can be printed, viewed on computer monitors, or projected on to screens for larger audiences.     Anaglyph paper maps are a cost effective offshoot of the GeoWall Project. Geowall is a high end visualization tool developed for use in the University of Minnesota's Geology and Geophysics Department. Because of its effectiveness it has been expanded to 300 institutions across the United States. GeoWall projects 3-D images and allows students to see 3-D representations but is limited because of the technology. Paper maps are a cost effective solution that allows anaglyph technology to be used in classroom and field-based applications.

    Maps are best when viewed with RED/CYAN anaglyph glasses!

    A note on downloading: "viewable" maps are .jpg files; "high-quality downloads" are .tif files. While it is possible to view the latter in a web-browser in most cases, the download may be slow. As an alternative, try right-clicking on the link to the high-quality download and choosing "save" from the pop-up menu that results. Save the file to your own machine, then try opening the saved copy. This may be faster than clicking directly on the link to open it in the browser.

    This GIS layer contains bathymetric elevation bands (derived from bathymetric contours) of selected freshwater lakes in Washington State. The majority of the bathymetric contours were digitized from maps contained in a series of seven documents: Reconnaissance Data on Lakes in Washington, Water-Supply Bulletin 43, Volume 1 through 7 by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Washington State Department of Ecology. The exceptions are 1) Lake Chelan which was digitized in 2016 from the publication Morphometry of Lake Chelan (published in January 1987); 2) Lake Sammamish whose digital data was acquired from King County in 2013 and is derived from data collected during the publication of Development of a Three-Dimensional Hydrographic Model of Lake Sammamish (published in November 2008); and 3) Lake Crescent, whose digital bathymetric soundings were taken by a private party during 2013/2014 and provided to the Department of Ecology and were converted to contour lines in 2016.

    Vegetation communities within Washington State Parks were delineated and classified using a combination of field survey and remote sensing techniques. Surveyors relied on descriptions from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (WADNR) late-seral forested plant associations of the Puget Lowland (Chappell 2005), freshwater wetland vegetation (Kunze 1994), and intertidal vegetation (Kunze and Cornelius 1982) to make final vegetation community assignments. In some cases, the WADNR descriptions were not adequate in describing existing vegetation associations. In these cases, alternative vegetation communities or plant associations were created by PBI.Remote sensing techniques consisted of manually delineating plant associations or mosaics of plant associations in a digital environment. Orthorectified aerial photography and LANDSAT Thematic Mapper satellite images were reviewed for discernable vegetation or landform patterns. When available, we also high-resolution true color orthorectified aerial photography was also used. Topographic maps, digital elevation models (DEMs), and light detection and ranging imagery (LIDAR) were also employed (where available) to assist the process of vegetation community delineation. The vegetation polygons were created by hand in GIS by ocular assessment. Field surveys consisted of visiting sites located within the vegetation polygons created during the remote sensing process. At representative sites within a polygon, vegetation data and site descriptions were recorded in a fashion consistent with the plant community polygon format. Further refinements and editing of the initial vegetation polygon layers were done by hand on hard copy maps in the field, and later edited digitally in GIS to create the final vegetation polygon layer.

Mine and prospect-related symbols, such as those used to represent prospect pits, mines, adits, dumps, tailings, etc., hereafter referred to as “mine” symbols or features, are currently being digitized on a state-by-state basis from the 7.5-minute (1:24,000-scale) and the 15-minute (1:48,000 and 1:62,500-scale) archive of the USGS Historical Topographic Maps Collection, or acquired from available databases (California and Nevada, 1:24,000-scale only). Compilation of these features is the first phase in capturing accurate locations and general information about features related to mineral resource exploration and extraction across the U.S. To date, the compilation of 637,000-plus point and polygon mine symbols from approximately 88,000 maps across 35 states has been completed: Alabama (AL), Arizona (AZ), Arkansas (AR), California (CA), Colorado (CO), Florida (FL), Georgia (GA), Idaho (ID), Iowa (IA), Illinois (IL), Indiana (IN), Kansas (KS), Kentucky (KY), Louisiana (LA), Michigan (MI), Minnesota (MN), Mississippi (MS), Missouri (MO), Montana (MT), North Carolina (NC), North Dakota (ND), Nebraska (NE), New Mexico (NM), Nevada (NV), Oklahoma (OK), Ohio (OH), Oregon (OR), South Carolina (SC), South Dakota (SD), Tennessee (TN), Texas (TX), Utah (UT), Washington (WA), Wisconsin (WI), and Wyoming (WY). The process renders not only a more complete picture of exploration and mining in the U.S., but an approximate time line of when these activities occurred. The data may be used for land use planning, assessing abandoned mine lands and mine-related environmental impacts, assessing the value of mineral resources from Federal, State and private lands, and mapping mineralized areas and systems for input into the land management process. The data are presented as three groups of layers based on the scale of the source maps. No reconciliation between the data groups was done. Datasets were developed by the U.S. Geological Survey Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center (GGGSC). This map presents land cover and detailed topographic maps for the United States. It uses the USA Topographic Map service. The map includes the National Park Service (NPS) Natural Earth physical map at 1.24km per pixel for the world at small scales, i-cubed eTOPO 1:250,000-scale maps for the contiguous United States at medium scales, and National Geographic TOPO! 1:100,000 and 1:24,000-scale maps (1:250,000 and 1:63,000 in Alaska) for the United States at large scales. The TOPO! maps are seamless, scanned images of United States Geological Survey (USGS) paper topographic maps.

The maps provide a very useful basemap for a variety of applications, particularly in rural areas where the topographic maps provide unique detail and features from other basemaps.
