An average U.S. family of four pays about 72.93 U.S. dollars for water every month as of 2019, if each person used about 100 gallons per day. The price index of water and sewage maintenance have increased in recent years as infrastructure continues to age across the United States.
Setting water rates
Cities that have increased prices in water, generally use the increased rate to improve infrastructure. Families generally pay a fixed charge every month which is independent of water consumption, and a variable charge which is related to the amount of water used. Higher fixed charges are more commonly used to ensure revenue stability due to increased pipe repair costs, however, it reduces the incentive to conserve water and may punish households that use less water.
Water prices worldwide
Water prices vary across the countries and cities due to the various processes that are used to assign a price. Utilities generally set a water rate or tariff based on costs of water treatment, water storage, transport, wastewater treatment and collection, and other administrative operations. On the other hand, direct abstraction of water from sources such as lakes, is usually not charged, however, some countries require payment based on volume or abstraction rights.

The GIS dataset is synchronised with asset data contained in the Council’s Asset Management database AssetFinda. A subset of the GIS dataset has been made available for download. It contains information about Council’s water reticulation network. Asset ownership is recorded in the owner attribute.New as-built information is entered by surveyed coordinates where these are available. Unsurveyed or historic assets were entered using dimensions from boundaries and/or existing assets. Unsurveyed and historic assets may have an accuracy in the order of +/- 10m, although it is hoped that it would generally be better than this. This GIS dataset is updated daily.Any questions pertaining to this data should be directed to the Waters Asset Management Team at Waipa District Council, email watersassetinfo@waipadc.govt.nzWaipa District Council does not make any representation or give any warranty as to the accuracy or exhaustiveness of the data released for public download. This is dataset contains the results of the Water Network Tool for Resilience (WNTR) case study application on a New York drinking water system. The data includes the population impacted from the firefighting and pipe criticality analysis; the water service availability (WSA) and pressure for the loss of source water scenarios; and the modified resilience index and the combined performance index for an example pipe criticality simulation and the loss of source water scenarios.
This dataset is associated with the following publication: Chu-Ketterer, L., R. Murray, P. Hassett, J. Kogan, K. Klise, and T. Haxton. Controlling water consumption contributes to environmental protection by reducing withdrawals from natural resources. By delaying the deadline for new investments in water production, distribution and remediation, it also allows utilities to achieve operational savings and customers to reduce their water bills. The assessment of the performance of drinking water networks is based on the measurement of water losses. To detect whether a network is performing well, two indicators are commonly used: yield and linear consumption index. - The efficiency of the network is the ratio between the amount of water consumed and the amount of water introduced into the network. - The linear consumption index is the volume of water consumed (m3/day) in relation to the linear pipe (km). Expressed in m3/day/km, it makes it possible to characterise the density of a drinking water distribution network.
