    Description

In January 2025, the average monthly price of the Canadian oil benchmark Western Canadian Select amounted to 62.86 U.S. dollars per barrel. This was an increase compared to the previous month. Western Canadian Select is a heavy sour blend of crude oil, produced exclusively in Western Canada. Western Canada’s oil production As a country with one of the largest oil reserves in the world, the Canadian oil sands are a crucial part of the Canadian energy sector. Not only are the oil sands a vital part of the Canadian energy supply, they play a large part in the Canadian economy. Furthermore, they are the largest single source of oil imports to their neighbors to the south, the United States. Oil sands are a combination of sand, water, and bitumen, and is therefore a more expensive source of crude oil than conventional oil, due to the large amount of processing required to produce a usable form of crude oil. The Canadian oil sands deposits are concentrated in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan: Athabasca, Cold Lake, and Peace River. Oil sands bitumen production and crude oil exports In recent years, Canada’s oil sands production reached an output of some 180 million cubic meters per year, an increase from the 35.4 million cubic meters produced in 2000. Canada's exports of crude oil amount to close to 4.7 million barrels per day, of which the vast majority are destined for refineries in the U.S.

    Description

Map represents the calculated (surface) heat-flow density (HFD) in mW/m2 with topographic correction. It is made with data from 119 boreholes from the measured temperatures in the available boreholes and measured thermal conductivity on cored rock samples from the same boreholes. The pattern of the HFD isolines is affected by numerous parameters, particularly the thermal conductivity of rocks, rock permeability and fracturing, fluid content of the rocks, and all are reflected in the measured temperature gradient in the boreholes.

    Dataset credits: Wildlife Conservation Society

Abstract: The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has digitally captured the Townsend Whaling Charts that were published as a series of 4 charts with the article titled "The distribution of certain whales as shown by logbook records of American whale ships" by Charles Haskins Townsend in the journal Zoologica in 1935. The 4 charts show the locations of over 50,000 captures of 4 whale species; sperm whales (36,908), right whales (8,415), humpback whales (2,883) and bowhead whales (5,114). Capture locations were transcribed from North American (“Yankee”) pelagic whale vessel log books dating from 1761 to 1920 and plotted onto nautical charts in a Mercator projection by a cartographer. Each point plotted on the charts represents the location of a whaling ship on a day when one or more whales were taken and is symbolized by month of the year using a combination of color and open and closed circles. Townsend and his cartographer plotted vessel locations as accurately as possible according to log book records. When plotting locations on an earlier sperm whale chart published in 1931 the cartographer spaced points where locations were very dense, "extending areas slightly" for a number of whaling grounds. However, for charts in preparation at this time, Townsend states that "this difficulty is avoided by omitting some of the data, rather than extend the ground beyond actual whaling limits." We assumed that this statement refers to the 1935 charts but there is still some question as to whether the cartographer did in fact space locations and thus expand whaling grounds.

Purpose: This dataset provides point features that represent the historical locations of right whale catches taken by North American pelagic whaling vessels between 1761 to 1920. Points were derived from 4 charts that were first scanned on a large format scanner at a resolution of 200 dpi. The charts were then georeferenced in the native projection of the charts, the Mercator projection, using GIS software (ESRI ArcView 3.2). Each vessel capture location plotted on the charts was then digitized as a point feature and attributed with the month of capture. One GIS file (ESRI shapefile) was then created for each whale species represented by the charts; sperm whale, right whale, humpback whale and bowhead whale.

Digitizing errors include missed points, particularly from areas of dense chart locations, and incorrect assignment of month of capture because of difficulty distinguishing between chart colors. However to limit these errors multiple checks of digitized and chart locations were made and color enhancements of chart scans were used to ensure correct month assignments. Overall we are confident that at least 95% of catch locations have been digitized and that at least 95% of month attributes are correct.

For full resolution digital copies of the Townsend charts please contact Gillian Woolmer (gwoolmer@wcs.org).

Supplemental information: [2023-01-31] The year of the date was changed from 1913 to 1849, the midpoint of the time range of the data.

WCS digitized the Townsend whaling charts in 2002 using ArcView 3.2 from ESRI. The information WCS has captured for each point location is the whale species (based on the chart) and the month, based on the chart point symbol. Exact dates and number of whales taken was not possible to determine. Right whale captures were separated into northern and southern right whale species, based on their geographic location.

Since time, count, day, and year were not available, "00:00:00," 1, 1, and 1913 were used, respectively. Only month is available.

    Description

The Historical Base Map (Historical ABK) covers the map scale 1:5000 as a topographic base map. The Historical ABK represents the interface between the property-oriented property map and the topographical maps and is derived exclusively from the information of the Property Register (ALKIS). At the end of a year, ABK’s databases are kept and made available as time intervals. The annual figures will be available from 2016. Starting in 2020, the Historical ABK will be available as a line card in a colored signature and a black and white presentation. Until 2019, a preliminary black and white presentation, known as Historical ABK, has been sifted. The “” stands for a transitional solution until the ABK was available completely and nationwide in NRW. The ABK reproduces the respective status of the cadastral authorities in the signature of the ABK. The signature between the Historical ABK and Historical ABK differs slightly.

In 2005 Geoscience Australia and the National Oceans Office undertook a joint project to produce a consistent, high-quality 9 arc second (0.0025 decimal degree (dd) or ~250m at the equator) …Show full descriptionIn 2005 Geoscience Australia and the National Oceans Office undertook a joint project to produce a consistent, high-quality 9 arc second (0.0025 decimal degree (dd) or ~250m at the equator) bathymetric grid for Australian waters. In 2009 a number of new datasets were included in an updated version of the grid. , The 2009 bathymetric grid of Australia was produced to include recently acquired datasets, and solutions to issues identified in the previous version. The revised grid has the same extents as its 2005 counterpart, including the Australian water column jurisdiction lying between 92o E and 172o E, and 8o S and 60o S. The waters adjacent to the continent of Australia and Tasmania are included, as are areas surrounding Macquarie Island, and the Australian Territories of Norfolk Island, Christmas Island, and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The area selected does not include Australia's marine jurisdiction offshore from the Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands and the Australian Antarctic Territory. , As per the 2005 grid, the 0.0025 dd resolution is only supported where direct bathymetric observations are sufficiently dense (e.g. where swath bathymetry data or digitised chart data exist) (Webster and Petkovic, 2005). In areas where no sounding data are available (in waters off the Australian shelf), the grid is based on the 2 arc minute ETOPO (Smith and Sandwell, 1997) and 1 arc minute ETOPO (Amante and Eakins, 2008) satellite derived bathymetry. The topographic data (on shore data) is based on the revised Australian 0.0025dd topography grid (Geoscience Australia, 2008), the 0.0025dd New Zealand topography grid (Geographx, 2008) and the 90m SRTM DEM (Jarvis et al, 2008). Description

This map is part of the UAE solar atlas developed by the Research Center for Renewable Energy Mapping and Assessment (ReCREMA) at Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi. The UAE solar atlas utilizes satellite imagery through a robust ANN model to map the solar potential across the country. Estimated irradiance is subsequently validated against independent ground data. Direct normal irradiance (DNI), diffuse horizontal irradiance (DHI) and global horizontal irradiance (GHI) are produced at a 3 km spatial resolution and in a near real-time manner (updated every 15 min). Hourly, daily, monthly and yearly irradiation maps for all three components are derived as the final product.
