The share of ultra high net worth individuals (those who have above 30 million euros in assets) subjected to the wealth tax (Patrimonio) in Spain has been decreased gradually from 2011 to 2019. In 2021, 36.9 percent of UHNWIs paid the wealth tax, almost 12 percent less than at the beginning of the period analyzed. The Community of Madrid is the only region in the Mediterranean country that offers a 100 percent tax exemption, meaning that no resident of this region has to pay any wealth tax. It is therefore a common way for wealthy individuals to avoid wealth taxes.

    Description

How did the Spanish money supply evolve in the aftermath of the discovery of large amounts of precious metals in Spanish America? We synthesize the available data on the mining of precious metals and their international flow to estimate the money supply for Spain from 1492 to 1810. Our estimate suggests that the Spanish money supply increased more than ten-fold. Viewed through the equation of exchange this money supply increase can account for most of the price level rise in early modern Spain.

Description

In 2023, the average net personal wealth among the most affluent one percent of Spanish population was 5.15 million euros. On the other side, the wealth of bottom 50 percent of the wealth holders in the country was estimated at 14,700 euros. When looking at the evolution of wealth distribution in Spain during the last decades, it can be observed, that the share of wealth held by the least affluent half of the population is now lower than it was at the beginning of the 21th century.
