    Description

    Research data to accommodate the article "Overlay journals: a study of the current landscape" (https://doi.org/10.1177/09610006221125208)

    Identifying the sample of overlay journals was an explorative process (occurring during April 2021 to February 2022). The sample of investigated overlay journals were identified by using the websites of Episciences.org (2021), Scholastica (2021), Free Journal Network (2021), Open Journals (2021), PubPub (2022), and Wikipedia (2021). In total, this study identified 34 overlay journals. Please see the paper for more details about the excluded journal types.

    The journal ISSN numbers, manuscript source repositories, first overlay volumes, article volumes, publication languages, peer-review type, licence for published articles, author costs, publisher types, submission policy, and preprint availability policy were observed by inspecting journal editorial policies and submission guidelines found from journal websites. The overlay journals’ ISSN numbers were identified by examining journal websites and cross-checking this information with the Ulrich’s periodicals database (Ulrichsweb, 2021). Journals that published review reports, either with reviewers’ names or anonymously, were classified as operating with open peer-review. Publisher types defined by Laakso and Björk (2013) were used to categorise the findings concerning the publishers. If the journal website did not include publisher information, the editorial board was interpreted to publish the journal.

    The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) field of science classification was used to categorise the journals into different domains of science. The journals’ primary OECD field of sciences were defined by the authors through examining the journal websites.

    Whether the journals were indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Scopus, or Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science Core collection’s journal master list was examined by searching the services with journal ISSN numbers and journal titles.

    The identified overlay journals were examined from the viewpoint of both qualitative and quantitative journal metrics. The qualitative metrics comprised the Nordic expert panel rankings of scientific journals, namely the Finnish Publication Forum, the Danish Bibliometric Research Indicator and the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers. Searches were conducted from the web portals of the above services with both ISSN numbers and journal titles. Clarivate Analytics’ Journal Citation Reports database was searched with the use of both ISSN numbers and journal titles to identify whether the journals had a Journal Citation Indicator (JCI), Two-Year Impact Factor (IF) and an Impact Factor ranking (IF rank). The examined Journal Impact Factors and Impact Factor rankings were for the year 2020 (as released in 2021).

    This paper introduces a citation-based method to obtain updated and extended information about news coverage of research. ProQuest was used to search for citations to 9,639 Science and 3,412 Social Science journals from eight UK daily newspapers during 2006-2015. Most Science (95%) and Social Science (94%) journals were never cited by these newspapers. Half of the cited Science journals covered medical or health-related topics, whereas 43% of the Social Sciences journals were related to psychiatry or psychology. There was no general trend for news coverage to increase or decrease over time. A content analysis of the citing news stories found that 94% mentioned journals to report research findings. From these, 60% described research extensively and 53% used more than one source. There were variations in the extent to which newspapers reported good or bad news and most news stories had no comments about the quality of the reported research. Finally, a small number of prestigious British journals were cited particularly often. In conclusion, whilst it is challenging to attract press coverage for non-health research, it is less difficult than previously thought for the social sciences and researchers should be encouraged to promote health-related studies and those in prestigious journals.

    Description

    Background: Ferroptosis is a novel mechanism of programmed cell death coined in 2012, which has been found to play important roles in human health and disease. In the past decade, ferroptosis research has seen booming growth worldwide. The aim of this study was to visualize the scientific outputs and research trends of ferroptosis in the field of cancer.Methods: The raw data of publications were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection on 19 December 2021. The information on the impact factor (IF) and Journal Citation Reports (JCR) division were obtained from the website of Web of Science. Two kinds of software (CiteSpace and VOSviewer) were used to perform visualized analysis.Results: From 2012 to 2021, a total of 1833 publications related to ferroptosis in cancer were identified for final analysis. The annual number of citations and publications grew exponentially over the past decade. China (1,092) and United States (489) had the highest number of publications; Central South University and Guangzhou Medical University were the most productive institutions. Daolin Tang and Scott J Dixon were the most active authors ranked by most productive and co-cited, respectively. The journals with the highest output and co-citation frequency were Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications and Cell, respectively. Among the 1833 publications, four were identified with citations more than 1000 times. Six co-cited references had a citation burst duration until 2021. Analysis of keywords suggested the current research of ferroptosis in cancer clusters in 9 hotspots and newly emerging frontier may be “multidrug resistance”.Conclusion: Cancer research is the major area of active research in ferroptosis. Our results provide a global landscape of the ferroptosis research in cancer from 2012 to 2021, which serves as a reference for future studies in this field.

    Description

    Dataset from a study aiming to analyze the coverage of Latin American and Caribbean journals in Google Scholar Metrics (GSM). Data from 8,205 journals from 24 countries of the region were downloaded from Latindex database. A Python script was used for automated title search and data extraction (titles, h5-index, h5-median, URLs) in GSM. For the journals not found, a manual search was carried out, with attempts by variations of the title. It was found 3,070 journals indexed in GSM, which corresponds to 37.42% of the Latindex list. The search was performed on the 2021 edition of GSM, which considers articles published between 2016 and 2020 and citations registered until July 2021. The number of all types of documents published (productivity) in the h5-index period (2016-2020) in Scopus, Journal Citation Reports, and SciELO of 1,314 journals was also identified.

    The present dataset is the result of this study, which is under peer-review in a scientific journal.

    The dataset comprises titles, h5-index; h5-median, URLs of 3,070 publications from Latin America and the Caribbean identified in Google Scholar Metrics, and the respective editorial information of the publications was extracted from Latindex

    The original language of the content was kept, mainly Spanish in the case of editorial data from Latindex. The columns descriptors are also shown in English.

    The productivity data refer to the number of all types of documents published by the journals in the period 2016-2020. Data were extracted from the InCities Journal Citation Reports, Scopus, and SciELO Citation Index (Web of Science database).

    In this version 2, only the productivity data were changed, covering a larger number of journals (1,314) and including all types of documents. Other data are the same as in the first version (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5572873).

Journal Ethics The Indian Journal of Pharmacy started in 1939 as "a quarterly journal devoted to the Science and practice of Pharmacy in all its branches". The Chief Editor and the main guiding force behind the 'Journal' was Prof. M. L. Schroff, Head of the Department of Pharmaceutics, Benaras Hindu University, Benaras. Owing to various difficulties experienced in publishing the 'Journal" at Benaras, the Council of IPA decided in 1946 to entrust the task to its Bombay Branch, and to transfer the editorial and publication offices to Bombay. Prof. M. L. Khorana, Head of the Pharmaceuticals Section, Department of Chemical Technology, Bombay University was requested to take the Editorship. In 1949 it was decided to publish this journal bi-monthly instead of quarterly. Soon after from January 1950 this journal started coming out as a monthly periodical. While Mr. S. P. Mukherji worked as Assistant Editor from 1946 to 1952, in May 1950 Mr. N. S. Bhunvara joined as the second Assistant Editor. The Headquarters of the IPA was shifted to Bombay with effect from 1st January 1953 and this helped considerably the publication of this journal and its circulation to members. Prof. Khorana resigned as Editor of the journal with effect from 1 January 1954 and Dr. G. B. Ramasarma succeeded him as the Editor and Mr. A. I. Mehta and Dr. R. S. Baichwal joined as Assistant Editors. In 1955 July, the journal’s office together with those of the Association and the Bombay State Branch was shifted from U. D. C.     Description

    Background: We identify the most cited articles that have influenced the clinical practices of neurologists. Methods: We first analyzed the top 100 cited articles published in 50 neurology journals with high impact factors. We collected all of the original articles on clinical neurology published in all 554 medical journals. The Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science search tools were used to identify the top 100 cited articles in the database of Journal Citation Reports since 1950, which were then manually reviewed to discover their contents. Results: In the first part of analysis, the top 100 cited articles were all published in 17 journals, with 26 articles published in Neurology. The most frequent topic subject of neurodegeneration appeared in 40 articles. The second part of the analysis revealed that the top 100 cited articles were also all published in 17 journals, with 30 articles published in New England Journal of Medicine. In contrast to the first part of the analysis, stroke was the most frequent topic subject (in 38 articles). Conclusions: Our bibliometric analysis has yielded 2 detailed lists of the top 100 cited articles that were listed separately using different methods. This approach can provide information about the trends and academic achievements in the field of clinical neurology.

    Description

    Fundamental changes in the way scientific research is disseminated have inspired the concept of altmetrics, most prominently the Altmetric Attention Score (AAS). The exact relation between the latter and traditional measures of science reception (e.g. citation count) is unknown. In this study, we determined citation counts and AAS as well as the ratio between the two (AAS-to-citation ratio) in 138,339 original research and review articles from 86 neurological journals between 2012 and 2021. The journal impact factor was closely correlated with both citation count (rs = 0.73) and AAS (rs = 0.64), whereas it showed a negative association with the AAS-to-citation ratio (rs = −0.26). Reviews accumulated more citations and a higher AAS than original research, while their AAS-to-citation ratio was significantly lower. Citation count was the only metric significantly associated with the number of publications by country (rs = 0.65). There were notable differences between major neurological subspecialties, with Alzheimer’s disease the article topic having the highest average citation count, AAS, and AAS-to-citation ratio. Our findings suggest that the career of a neurological paper in the academic and public sphere is determined by various and sometimes specific factors. Methods To gain a representative overview of the research in neurology during the decade of interest, we took the top 20 neurology journals by h5 index11 listed on Google Scholar and combined them with the top 50 neurology and clinical neurology journals according to the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) (https://www.scimagojr.com). Only journals with at least 100 citable documents (i.e. original research or reviews) over the period of interest were considered to avoid potential bias by outliers. Any duplicates were removed. In total, 86 journals were chosen for further analyses. The Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection was used for the identification of articles to be included. Every document from the 86 journals listed as either ‘Article’ or ‘Review’ with a final publication year between 2012 and 2021 was included in the analysis. This timeframe was selected with two reasons in mind: First, the company Altmetric (and with it the AAS) was founded in 2011, so 2012 constitutes the earliest year with full coverage. Second, since the data collection took place in late 2022, the year 2021 was fully covered in the databases and article citations/online dissemination had already been given some time to accumulate. Citation counts and other metadata for each document were retrieved from the WoS Core Collection database. Impact factors for each journal were retrieved through Clarivate’s Journal Citation Reports (2021 being the most recent data available).AAS data were obtained through the Altmetric API using the documents’ unique Digital Object Identifier. All data were collected between the 13th and 15th of November, 2022.

    On the report:

    Research into publication cultures commissioned by VSNU and carried out by Utrecht University Library has detailed university output beyond just journal articles, as well as the possibilities to assess open access levels of these other output types. For all four main fields reported on, the use of publication types other than journal articles is indeed substantial. For Social Sciences and Arts & Humanities in particular (with over 40% and over 60% of output respectively not being regular journal articles) looking at journal articles only ignores a significant share of their contribution to research and society. This is not only about books and book chapters, either: book reviews, conference papers, reports, case notes (in law) and all kinds of web publications are also significant parts of university output.

    Analyzing all these publication forms and especially determining to what extent they are open access is currently not easy. Even combining some the largest citation databases (Web of Science, Scopus and Dimensions) leaves out a lot of non-article content and in some fields even journal articles are only partly covered. Lacking metadata like affiliations and DOIs (either in the original documents or in the scholarly search engines) makes it even harder to analyze open access levels by institution and field. Using repository-harvesting databases like BASE and NARCIS in addition to the main citation databases improves understanding of open access of non-article output, but these routes also have limitations. The report has recommendations for stakeholders, mostly to improve metadata and coverage and apply persistent identifiers.

    This is dataset about Serbian papers published in journals indexed in Web of Science collections in the period 2003-2021
    We used as "serbian" countries: Serbia, Serbia and Montenegro, Yugoslavia

    The terms Serbian researcher and Serbian paper used in this dataset are defined as follows:
    Serbian researcher is a researcher affiliated with a Serbian institution,
    Serbian paper is a paper with at least one Serbian researcher in the list of authors.
    This means that a paper published by a researcher with non-Serbian nationality (i.e. German) working at a Serbian institution is taken into account in the analysis of Serbian papers described in this paper.

    Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science (WoS) database was used for data acquisition. We searched Serbian papers in two WoS collections - Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). The search query executed over those collections on 18th of January, 2022.

    We also analyzed the number of articles of Serbian researchers published in journals with an unstable impact factor (IF), i.e. journals which didn’t have an IF before 2008, and had one in some subperiod of 2008-2015, i.e. lost their IF until 2015. The majority of those journals stopped being indexed in Web of Science as a ban for losing the quality or having predatory journal behavior. We found 143 such journals and their ISSNs by using the JCR (Journal citation reports in the period 2007 - 2015).

    Description

    Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) estimate fixed and random effects and are especially useful when the dependent variable is binary, ordinal, count or quantitative but not normally distributed. They are also useful when the dependent variable involves repeated measures, since GLMMs can model autocorrelation. This study aimed to determine how and how often GLMMs are used in psychology and to summarize how the information about them is presented in published articles. Our focus in this respect was mainly on frequentist models. In order to review studies applying GLMMs in psychology we searched the Web of Science for articles published over the period 2014–2018. A total of 316 empirical articles were selected for trend study from 2014 to 2018. We then conducted a systematic review of 118 GLMM analyses from 80 empirical articles indexed in Journal Citation Reports during 2018 in order to evaluate report quality. Results showed that the use of GLMMs increased over time and that 86.4% of articles were published in first- or second-quartile journals. Although GLMMs have, in recent years, been increasingly used in psychology, most of the important information about them was not stated in the majority of articles. Report quality needs to be improved in line with current recommendations for the use of GLMMs.

    Description

    This dataset is part of EC Horizon 2020 project ALLINTERACT Widening and diversifying citizen engagement in science (872396).
    It contains the raw data obtained from the fieldwork, which consists of: 1) Literature Review, 2) Social Media Analytics, 3) Focus Groups, 4) Survey and 5) Social Media Communicative Observation.
    1) Literature Review
    The objective of the literature review was to address the following topics in gender and education: a) How citizens’ benefit from scientific research, b) Citizen awareness of the impact of scientific research, c) Awareness-raising initiatives succeeding at engaging citizens in scientific participation, including the Open Access movement and citizen science initiatives, d) Awareness-raising actions that foster the recruitment of new talent in sciences and e) Policies that promote awareness-raising actions and citizen engagement in science.
    In order to do so, the searches were carried out in the top scientific databases, namely Web of Science (mainly in those journals indexed in Journal Citation Reports) and Scopus. The articles were published between 2010-2021 in journals indexed Q1 or Q2 in JCR or in Q1 journals indexed in Scopus. Relevant reports from EU-funded research projects and official EU documents were also included.
    We provide one word file with the following information of each topic (a-e) in gender and education.

    - Identified sources
    - Outcomes
    - Annexes: Grids with the details of the identified socurces

    2) Social Media Analytic
    It is the raw data obtained from social media interactions (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Reddit) among citizens about citizen participation in science and research with social impact related to two Sustainable Development Goals: Quality Education and Gender Equality.
    The data collection followed a twofold strategy 1) Top-Down, in which researchers identified and selected relevant Twitter and Instagram hashtags and Facebook and Reddit pages and 2) Bottom-Up, in which Twitter hashtags were selected based on daily Trending Topics.
    The data was collected between March 9th and March 16th 2021 and has been obtained, cleaned and anonymized following Allinteract - Social Media Analytics Protocol (Flecha & Pulido, 2021).
    We provide five Excel files (one for each social network explored). Each file contains the main information of the extracted messages, however the information extracted in each case is slightly different.
    -Twitter: Tweet ID, Time, Tweet Type, Retweeted By, Number of Retweets, Hashtags
    -Facebook: Post ID, Video, Type, Likes, Created Time, Updated Time, Comment ID, Comment Likes, Comment Time, Page Likes
    -Instagram: Likes, comments, date
    -Reddit: Row ID, sub_id, sub_title, sub_score, sub_date, comment_id, comment_score, comment_date

    3) Focus Groups
    This data file contains the pseudonymized transcription of a total of 6 focus groups in gender and 6 in education, which were conducted between October 2021 and February 2022. These focus groups are the pre-test and therefore, the groups are distributed in control group or experimental group. The participants of the gender focus groups were women (including vulnerable women) from a women’s group, members of an LGBTQI group and women (including young women) from a women’s group. The participants of the education focus groups were parents, teachers and students.
    We provide a word file with the literal transcriptions of the focus groups in the language in which the focus groups were conducted (English, Spanish or Portuguese).

    4) Survey
    This data file contains the anonym answers of the survey conducted with participants from 12 countries, through a CATI/CAWI method. The survey was conducted between November 2021 and February 2022 and consists of 59 questions. The exploitation of this data has been carried out with the SPSS software.
    We provide an excel file with the 59 questions and the answers of 7507 participants.

    5) Social Media Communicative Observation
    The Social Media Communicative Observation aims to explore the effects of introducing scientific pieces of evidence in social media interactions as an initiative to increase participation through awareness. In order to do so, scientific evidence on gender and education were introduced in 10 Facebook groups (5 related to gender and 5 to education), 10 Reddit communities (5 related to gender and 5 to education) and 2 Social Impact Platforms (Sappho and Adhyayana).
    We provide an excel file with the anonymized interactions among users around the introduced piece of evidence. This Excel file contains the following information: Group of documents, document name, code, start, final, weight, segment, changed by, changed, created, comment, area and percentage (%).

    6) Focus Group – Post test

    This data file contains the pseudonymized transcription of a total of 6 focus groups post test

Research data to accommodate the article "Overlay journals: a study of the current landscape" (https://doi.org/10.1177/09610006221125208)

Identifying the sample of overlay journals was an explorative process (occurring during April 2021 to February 2022). The sample of investigated overlay journals were identified by using the websites of Episciences.org (2021), Scholastica (2021), Free Journal Network (2021), Open Journals (2021), PubPub (2022), and Wikipedia (2021). In total, this study identified 34 overlay journals. Please see the paper for more details about the excluded journal types.

The journal ISSN numbers, manuscript source repositories, first overlay volumes, article volumes, publication languages, peer-review type, licence for published articles, author costs, publisher types, submission policy, and preprint availability policy were observed by inspecting journal editorial policies and submission guidelines found from journal websites. The overlay journals’ ISSN numbers were identified by examining journal websites and cross-checking this information with the Ulrich’s periodicals database (Ulrichsweb, 2021). Journals that published review reports, either with reviewers’ names or anonymously, were classified as operating with open peer-review. Publisher types defined by Laakso and Björk (2013) were used to categorise the findings concerning the publishers. If the journal website did not include publisher information, the editorial board was interpreted to publish the journal.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) field of science classification was used to categorise the journals into different domains of science. The journals’ primary OECD field of sciences were defined by the authors through examining the journal websites.

Whether the journals were indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Scopus, or Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science Core collection’s journal master list was examined by searching the services with journal ISSN numbers and journal titles.

The identified overlay journals were examined from the viewpoint of both qualitative and quantitative journal metrics. The qualitative metrics comprised the Nordic expert panel rankings of scientific journals, namely the Finnish Publication Forum, the Danish Bibliometric Research Indicator and the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals, Series and Publishers. Searches were conducted from the web portals of the above services with both ISSN numbers and journal titles. Clarivate Analytics’ Journal Citation Reports database was searched with the use of both ISSN numbers and journal titles to identify whether the journals had a Journal Citation Indicator (JCI), Two-Year Impact Factor (IF) and an Impact Factor ranking (IF rank). The examined Journal Impact Factors and Impact Factor rankings were for the year 2020 (as released in 2021).
