    Description

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international network and data infrastructure funded by the world's governments providing global data that document the occurrence of species. GBIF currently integrates datasets documenting over 1.6 billion species occurrences, growing daily. The GBIF occurrence dataset combines data from a wide array of sources including specimen-related data from natural history museums, observations from citizen science networks and environment recording schemes. While these data are constantly changing at GBIF.org, periodic snapshots are taken and made available on AWS.

    Description

It is important to easily and efficiently obtain high quality species distribution data for predicting the potential distribution of species using species distribution models (SDMs). There is a need for a powerful software tool to automatically or semi-automatically assist in identifying and correcting errors. Here, we use Python to develop a web-based software tool (SDMdata) to easily collect occurrence data from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and check species names and the accuracy of coordinates (latitude and longitude). It is an open source software (GNU Affero General Public License/AGPL licensed) allowing anyone to access and manipulate the source code. SDMdata is available online free of charge from .

    Description

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) was established by governments in 2001 to encourage free and open access to biodiversity data, via the Internet. Through a global network of countries and organizations, GBIF promotes and facilitates the mobilization, access, discovery and use of information about the occurrence of organisms over time and across the planet. GBIF provides three core services and products: # An information infrastructure an Internet-based index of a globally distributed network of interoperable databases that contain primary biodiversity data information on museum specimens, field observations of plants and animals in nature, and results from experiments so that data holders across the world can access and share them # Community-developed tools, standards and protocols the tools data providers need to format and share their data # Capacity-building the training, access to international experts and mentoring programs that national and regional institutions need to become part of a decentralized network of biodiversity information facilities. GBIF and its many partners work to mobilize the data, and to improve search mechanisms, data and metadata standards, web services, and the other components of an Internet-based information infrastructure for biodiversity. GBIF makes available data that are shared by hundreds of data publishers from around the world. These data are shared according to the GBIF Data Use Agreement, which includes the provision that users of any data accessed through or retrieved via the GBIF Portal will always give credit to the original data publishers. * Explore Species: Find data for a species or other group of organisms. Information on species and other groups of plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms, including species occurrence records, as well as classifications and scientific and common names. * Explore Countries: Find data on the species recorded in a particular country, territory or island. Information on the species recorded in each country, including records shared by publishers from throughout the GBIF network. * Explore Datasets: Find data from a data publisher, dataset or data network. Information on the data publishers, datasets and data networks that share data through GBIF, including summary information on 10028 datasets from 419 data publishers.

    Description

The Validated red lists of Flanders, Belgium is a species checklist dataset published by the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO) and described (v1.3) in Maes et al. 2019b (https://doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.7.e34089). It includes 3.063 taxa from 19 Flemish red lists that are considered validated, i.e. which used quantitative criteria and a representative sample of occurrences across all ecological regions in Flanders (Maes et al. 2015) for red list assessment. Here this compilation is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes for each taxon: the scientific name, higher classification (provided by the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy, https://doi.org/10.15468/39omei), stable taxon identifier and Dutch vernacular name (in the taxon core), the red list category in Flanders as published, its IUCN equivalent and year of assessment (respectively in occurrenceRemarks, threatStatus and eventDate in the distribution extension), and the life-history traits biome, biotope, cuddliness, lifespan, mobility, nutrient level, and spine (in the description extension). Issues with the dataset can be reported at: https://github.com/inbo/rl-flanders-checklist

We have released this dataset to the public domain under a Creative Commons Zero waiver. We would appreciate it if you follow the INBO norms for data use (https://www.inbo.be/en/norms-data-use) when using the data. If you have any questions regarding this dataset, don't hesitate to contact us via the contact information provided in the metadata or via opendata@inbo.be.

    Description

The FLOTROP dataset contains numerous plant observations (around 340,000 occurrences) in northern tropical Africa (from the 5 th to 25th parallel north) in open ecosystems (savannah and steppe). They were collected by multiple collectors between 1920 and 2012 and were managed by Philippe Daget. These observations are probably the most important and unique source of plant distribution over the Sahel area. The data are now available in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), Tela Botanica website, and as maps in the African Plant Database. For the overall area involved, this dataset has increased by 40% the data available in the GBIF. For some countries between the 15th and 21st parallel north, the FLOTROP dataset has increased available occurrences 10-fold compared to the data existing in the GBIF.

Tropical northern Africa (herein defined as between the 5th and 25th parallel north) is mostly occupied by open ecosystems, such as steppe and savannah. The vegetation in these ecosystems is consumed by animals, either wildlife or livestock, and is also used by the local communities for food, energy or medicinal purposes. The open ecosystems in tropical northern Africa are of great importance to the economy, food security and human well-being. Plant diversity within these ecosystems is driven by many factors, such as the climate, soil, fire and grazing. Plant diversity in these regions is being greatly impacted by global change. Historical data are needed to understand species and diversity dynamics. The database presented in this work is the collection of numerous datasets gathered over the years. At the outset, the FLOTROP database was intended to store all the data recorded by IEMVT (French institute for tropical livestock production and veterinary medicine, now part of CIRAD) in the sixties. In 1993, CIRAD and CNRS set up a project to collect a maximum of botanical surveys within these regions. Two software packages were created by the team to manage the database. The first was created under DOS then a second was started under Windows using the APL DYALOG language. Data were collected and scanned between 1993 and 2016. We extracted the data from the software version. We shared the species occurrences recorded in the database on the Tela Botanica website (http://www.tela-botanica.org/) and on the GBIF database.

    Description

The VMM - Inland water macrophyte occurrences in Flanders, Belgium is a sampling event dataset published by the Flanders Environment Agency (VMM). The dataset originates from the macrophyte monitoring network of the VMM and was developed to meet the requirements of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). It includes information on more than 4000 sampling events, associated with more than 40 thousand occurrences of inland water macrophytes in Flanders, sampled from 2006 onwards. Here it is published as a standardized Darwin Core Archive and includes for each sampling event: an stable identifier, the sampling location, date and protocol (in the event core), linked to multiple occurrences of macrophytes (in the occurrence core). Sampling events in water bodies are linked to multiple (a)biotic measurements or facts (in the measurement or facts extension). Issues with the dataset can be reported at https://github.com/riparias/vmm-macrophytes-occurrences/issues

    Description

This database contains information on the so far registered specimens in the Herpetology Collection of the Swedish Museum of Natural History. The database is managed with The Artedian collection management system in MS-Access. The main tables describe collecting events and collection objects which are related on a one to many relationships. The database is Darwin Core compatible but uses alternative table names and includes also loan routines, document management and other components of collection management. Principal items managed are objects (catalog number, identification, number of specimens, sex size, location in collection, collection space, preservative, identifier, etc.); localities (collecting events with date, collector, geographic information including co-ordinates, and more), collecting site habitat; loans (with extensive metadata), accession information (date of accession, donors, acquisition conditions etc., specimen preservation progress). DNA samples are managed as subsamples of objects. Specimen and collecting site images are managed with extensive metadata. The database has a web presentation at http://artedi.nrm.se/nrmfish.
