    Description

FlowMapper.org is a web-based framework for automated production and design of origin-destination flow maps. FlowMapper has four major features that contribute to the advancement of existing flow mapping systems. First, users can upload and process their own data to design and share customized flow maps. The ability to save data, cartographic design and map elements in a project file allows users to easily share their data and/or cartographic design with others. Second, users can generate customized flow symbols to support different flow map reading tasks such as comparing flow magnitudes and directions and identifying flow and location clusters that are strongly connected with each other. Third, FlowMapper supports supplementary layers such as node symbols, choropleth, and base maps to contextualize flow patterns with location references and characteristics. Finally, the web-based architecture of FlowMapper supports server-side computational capabilities to process and normalize large flow data and reveal natural patterns of flows.

[Note 02/2024: this resource is now decomissioned, link provides related maps, tools, and GIS layers.]The Dynamic Mapping Tool provides a spatial index to over 5,500 sites on streams and rivers in the U.S. and Canada where full year stream temperatures are currently being monitored by numerous agencies. You can filter stream temperature sites by state, agency, year and contact. The primary goal is to portray a comprehensive set of sites across all agencies to facilitate data sharing and avoid redundancies, as new monitoring sites are added to the regional network. Raw temperature data are not downloadable through this site, but typically reside with the local data stewards, whose contact information is displayed by clicking on a point in the map. In some instances, RMRS may have copies of the raw data and permission to distribute it, so we ask that you contact us before contacting the local data stewards. The map will be updated once each winter to maintain an accurate description of current monitoring locations. Description

Interactive map service (http://ims.sea.gov.ua:8081/website/Atlas_forAll_en/viewer.htm), based on GIS database ATLAS has been created by UkrSCES to provide an integrated picture of the modern state of the Black Sea coastal zone. It provides information on the geography of NWBS coastal zone and coastal water areas, as well as data on demography, natural resources, economy and pollution. The work is financed under the auspices of the Ministry for Environmental Protection of Ukraine. ATLAS is organised around several themes and elements, comprising interactive maps, statistical data, and descriptions. The cartography is based on the digital topographic chart of Ukraine (scale 1:500,000) and includes the following thematic layers: * Natural resources, * Protected territories, * Pollution resources, * Recreational potential, * Coastal zone. The main part of the descriptive text of ATLAS is drawn from the results of various studies that were undertaken by UkrSCES from 1993 to 2006. ATLAS allows users to select and display information on the resources, state and condition оf the NWBS coastal zone. This interactive service can be employed not only by experts and those responsible for decision-making, but also by the general public. It represents a major contribution to Ukraine's responsibilities under the Aarhus Convention for access to environmental information.

    Description

This study focuses on the use of citizen science and GIS tools for collecting and analyzing data on Rose Swanson Mountain in British Columbia, Canada. While several organizations collect data on wildlife habitats, trail mapping, and fire documentation on the mountain, there are few studies conducted on the area and citizen science is not being addressed. The study aims to aggregate various data sources and involve citizens in the data collection process using ArcGIS Dashboard and ArcGIS Survey 123. These GIS tools allow for the integration and analysis of different kinds of data, as well as the creation of interactive maps and surveys that can facilitate citizen engagement and data collection. The data used in the dashboard was sourced from BC Data Catalogue, Explore the Map, and iNaturalist. Results show effective citizen participation, with 1073 wildlife observations and 3043 plant observations. The dashboard provides a user-friendly interface for citizens to tailor their map extent and layers, access surveys, and obtain information on each attribute included in the pop-up by clicking. Analysis on classification of fuel types, ecological communities, endangered wildlife species presence and critical habitat, and scope of human activities can be conducted based on the distribution of data. The dashboard can provide direction for researchers to develop research or contribute to other projects in progress, as well as advocate for natural resource managers to use citizen science data. The study demonstrates the potential for GIS and citizen science to contribute to meaningful discoveries and advancements in areas.

    Description

The dataset presents a list of laboratories set up in the humanities, digital humanities, and media studies within universities across the world in 1983-2018. The data are collected and organized in an interactive map designed in the digital StoryMapJS tool, creating a valuable visible representation of the laboratory concept from a geographical and historical perspective. Based on the interactive map, I analyze the history of the laboratory in the humanities within a global context from the 1980s to 2018. The dataset includes 214 laboratories.

    Data collection

I identified laboratories by using different resources such as universities’ websites, articles, and research projects. Besides, I sent a questionnaire to the most relevant networks in October 2018 to identify even more labs created in (digital) humanities and media studies at universities.

    Data organization

I collected data about each lab based on its website and other resources. I extracted the following data: year established, year ended (if applicable), lab’s name, university, city, country, affiliation and location (if provided), disciplines and keywords (based on labs’ statements and projects and aiming to situate a lab), selected projects (if provided), purpose (a short quotation of a lab’s statement published on its website), website, and geographical latitude and longitude. I organized all the data in chronological order according to year established in Google Sheets. Next, I used StoryMapJS, a free tool designed by the Northwestern University’s Knight Lab, to map my data.

    Description

Cartographic display of cross-scale phenomena and user-centered design are considered through a discussion of the development of an interactive web map depicting local-to-national economic impacts of hurricane storm surge events in Galveston Bay, Texas. Map development and design (as informed by stakeholder focus groups) is described, including approaches to presenting complex, cross-scale impacts of surge events across multiple years and scenarios. Particular consideration is given to how designs may communicate complexity without overly taxing users’ mental and perceptual resources (measured via NASA task-load index) or outstripping their mapping/domain expertise. The map produced uses linked map views to communicate multiple, cross-scale storm surge impacts. The production process and associated user testing highlighted the importance of matching tool complexity to users’ needs and levels of expertise, including through the use of tiered interface design. Optimizing the design of such maps to meet users’ needs is essential to fostering public hazard literacy.

    Description

NDS is an interactive, web-based system, for the visualization of multidimensional neighborhood dynamics across the 50 largest US Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) from 1980 to 2010 (http://neighborhooddynamics.dreamhosters.com). Four different visualization tools are developed: (1) an interactive time slider to show neighborhood classification changes for different years; (2) multiple interactive bar charts for each variables of each neighborhood; (3) an animated neighborhood’s trajectory and sequence cluster on a self-organizing map (SOM) output space; and (4) a synchronized visualization tool showing maps for four time stamps at once. The development of this interactive online platform for visualizing dynamics overcomes many of the challenges associated with communicating changes for multiple variables, across multiple time stamps, and for a large geographic area when relying upon static maps. The system enables users to select and dive into details on particular neighborhoods and explore their changes over time.
