Natural gas storage opening and closing inventories, injections, withdrawals and adjustments reported in gigajoules and cubic metres, monthly, January 2016 to present.
Note: Sample data provided. ・ These data identify and provide detailed information on underground natural gas storage in the United States as of December 2022. The attribute data for this point dataset come from EIA’s U.S. field level storage data, which is sourced from U.S. Energy Information Administration, Form EIA-191, Monthly Underground Gas Storage Report. It includes both active and inactive natural gas storage fields. EIA-191 collects information on working and base gas in reservoirs, injections, withdrawals, and location of reservoirs from operators of all underground natural gas storage fields on a monthly basis. The facility location data represent the approximate location based on research of publicly available information from sources such as Federal agencies, company websites, and satellite images on public websites.
In 2021, gas storage in Europe was lower than the average seen in the previous decade. As of *****************, gas storage reserves stood at ** percent compared to ** percent between 2011 and 2020. January was the only month in 2021 when the share of gas storage filled was above the average between 2011 and 2020.

UK Gas rose to 86.59 GBp/thm on July 31, 2025, up 0.30% from the previous day. Over the past month, UK Gas's price has risen 9.02%, but it is still 3.95% lower than a year ago, according to trading on a contract for difference (CFD) that tracks the benchmark market for this commodity. UK Natural Gas - values, historical data, forecasts and news - updated on August of 2025.
The average monthly price for natural gas in the United States amounted to **** nominal U.S. dollars per million British thermal units (Btu) in May 2025. By contrast, natural gas prices in Europe were about three times higher than those in the U.S. Prices in Europe tend to be notably higher than those in the U.S. as the latter benefits from being a major hydrocarbon producer. Europe's import reliance European prices for natural gas rose most notable throughout the second half of 2021 and much of 2022, peaking at over ** U.S. dollars per million Btu in August 2022. The sharp rise was due to supply chain issues and economic strain following the COVID-19 pandemic, which was further exacerbated by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. As a result of the war, many countries began looking for alternative sources, and Russian pipeline gas imports to the European Union declined as a result. Meanwhile, LNG was a great beneficiary, with LNG demand in Europe rising by more than ** percent between 2021 and 2023. How domestic natural gas production shapes prices As intimated, the United States’ position among the leaders of worldwide natural gas production is one of the main reasons for why prices for this commodity are so low across the country. In 2023, the U.S. produced more than ************ cubic meters of natural gas, which allays domestic demand and allows for far lower purchasing prices.

European Union (EU) countries imported no natural gas via the pipeline Nord Stream (also known as Nord Stream 1) from Russia to Germany from the week 36, 2022, to the week 36, 2023, or from September 5, 2022, to September 10, 2023. In the week 35, 2022, the volume amounted to 62 million cubic meters, which was nearly 20 times lower than the figure recorded in the week 21, 2022, or from May 23 to May 29, 2022.
Nord Stream 1 shutdown At the beginning of September 2022, the Russian energy company Gazprom, which holds the monopoly on the country's gas export market and operates Nord Stream, announced a shutdown of the pipeline for an indefinite time period allegedly due to a gas leak and required maintenance. The shutdown was expected to lead to a rise in gas prices, which have already seen a significant increase due to the war in Ukraine. The pipeline is one of the major gas import routes to the EU. In the first three months of 2022, over 60 percent of pipeline gas imports into the EU came via Nord Stream.
Key facts about Nord Stream 1 Nord Stream was put into operation in 2011 and 2012. The annual capacity of the 1,224-kilometer-long pipeline stands at 55 billion cubic meters. However, between 2018 and 2021, the volume of gas transported via the pipeline exceeded this figure. In 2021, it amounted to over 59 billion cubic meters. A twin pipeline Nord Stream 2 has been constructed in 2021, but its certification process was halted by the German government in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Significant leaks in Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 were discovered on September 27, 2022.
