The concept of urban unity is based on the continuity of the building and the number of inhabitants. An urban unit is a municipality or group of municipalities with a continuous building area (no cut-off of more than 200 metres between two buildings) with at least 2,000 inhabitants.

If the urban unit is located in a single municipality, it is referred to as an isolated city. Data set from the "table poléométrique" made in 1782 by Charles de Fourcroy. It is a data set where 109 towns in France territory are described from a morphology point of view (urban areas). Data set is based on annex of the article published by François de Dainville in Population (Grandeur et population des villes au XVIIIe siècle, Population, 1958, 13(3), pp. 459-480).

Indicator Definition:Urban land area in square kilometers, based on a combination of population counts (persons), settlement points, and the presence of Nighttime Lights. Areas are defined as urban where contiguous lighted cells from the Nighttime Lights or approximated urban extents based on buffered settlement points for which the total population is greater than 5,000 persons.

The purported spatial segregation of Muslim populations in Western Europe constitutes a longstanding policy and scholarly concern, yet little spatial data exists for purposes of empirical study. The MAPISLAM dataset is a research effort aimed at bridging this gap for the French empirical context. MAPISLAM is a spatial dataset built from publicly available, online repositories of addresses for places of interest destined to the Muslim communities of France’s major cities.
