The USGS National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) downloadable data collection from The National Map (TNM) is a comprehensive set of digital spatial data that encodes information about naturally occurring and constructed bodies of surface water (lakes, ponds, and reservoirs), paths through which water flows (canals, ditches, streams, and rivers), and related entities such as point features (springs, wells, stream gages, and dams). The information encoded about these features includes classification and other characteristics, delineation, geographic name, position and related measures, a "reach code" through which other information can be related to the NHD, and the direction of water flow. The network of reach codes delineating water and transported material flow allows users to trace movement in upstream and downstream directions. In addition to this geographic information, the dataset contains metadata that supports the exchange of future updates and improvements to the data. The NHD supports many applications, such as making maps, geocoding observations, flow modeling, data maintenance, and stewardship. For additional information on NHD, go to https://www.usgs.gov/core-science-systems/ngp/national-hydrography.
DWR was the steward for NHD and Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) in California. We worked with other organizations to edit and improve NHD and WBD, using the business rules for California. California's NHD improvements were sent to USGS for incorporation into the national database. The most up-to-date products are accessible from the USGS website. Please note that the California portion of the National Hydrography Dataset is appropriate for use at the 1:24,000 scale.
For additional derivative products and resources, including the major features in geopackage format, please go to this page: https://data.cnra.ca.gov/dataset/nhd-major-features Archives of previous statewide extracts of the NHD going back to 2018 may be found at https://data.cnra.ca.gov/dataset/nhd-archive.
In September 2022, USGS officially notified DWR that the NHD would become static as USGS resources will be devoted to the transition to the new 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP). 3DHP will consist of LiDAR-derived hydrography at a higher resolution than NHD. Upon completion, 3DHP data will be easier to maintain, based on a modern data model and architecture, and better meet the requirements of users that were documented in the Hydrography Requirements and Benefits Study (2016). The initial releases of 3DHP include NHD data cross-walked into the 3DHP data model. It will take several years for the 3DHP to be built out for California. Please refer to the resources on this page for more information.
The FINAL,STATIC version of the National Hydrography Dataset for California was published for download by USGS on December 27, 2023. This dataset can no longer be edited by the state stewards. The next generation of national hydrography data is the USGS 3D Hydrography Program (3DHP).
Questions about the California stewardship of these datasets may be directed to nhd_stewardship@water.ca.gov.
To create this layer, OCTO staff used ABCA's definition of “Full-Service Grocery Stores” (https://abca.dc.gov/page/full-service-grocery-store#gsc.tab=0)– pulled from the Food System Assessment below), and using those criteria, determined locations that fulfilled the categories in section 1 of the definition. Then, staff reviewed the Office of Planning’s Food System Assessment (https://dcfoodpolicycouncilorg.files.wordpress.com/2019/06/2018-food-system-assessment-final-6.13.pdf) list in Appendix D, comparing that to the created from the ABCA definition, which led to the addition of a additional examples that meet, or come very close to, the full-service grocery store criteria. The explanation from Office of Planning regarding how the agency created their list:“To determine the number of grocery stores in the District, we analyzed existing business licenses in the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (2018) Business License Verification system (located at https://eservices.dcra.dc.gov/BBLV/Default.aspx). To distinguish grocery stores from convenience stores, we applied the Alcohol Beverage and Cannabis Administration’s (ABCA) definition of a full-service grocery store. This definition requires a store to be licensed as a grocery store, sell at least six different food categories, dedicate either 50% of the store’s total square feet or 6,000 square feet to selling food, and dedicate at least 5% of the selling area to each food category. This definition can be found at https://abca.dc.gov/page/full-service-grocery-store#gsc.tab=0. To distinguish small grocery stores from large grocery stores, we categorized large grocery stores as those 10,000 square feet or more. This analysis was conducted using data from the WDCEP’s Retail and Restaurants webpage (located at https://wdcep.com/dc-industries/retail/) and using ARCGIS Spatial Analysis tools when existing data was not available. Our final numbers differ slightly from existing reports like the DC Hunger Solutions’ Closing the Grocery Store Gap and WDCEP’s Grocery Store Opportunities Map; this difference likely comes from differences in our methodology and our exclusion of stores that have closed.”Staff also conducted a visual analysis of locations and relied on personal experience of visits to locations to determine whether they should be included in the list.

Download .zipThis data set represents the GIS Version of the Public Land Survey System including both rectangular and non-rectangular surveys. The metadata describes the lineage, sources and production methods for the data content. The definitions and structure of this data is compliant with FGDC Cadastral Data Content Standards and Guidelines for publication. This coverage was originally created for the accurate location of the oil and gas wells in the state of Ohio. The original data set was developed as an ArcInfo coverage containing the original land subdivision boundaries for Ohio. Ohio has had a long and varied history of its land subdivisions that has led to the use of several subdivision strategies being applied. In general, these different schemes are composed of the Public Land Surveying System (PLSS) subdivisions and the irregular land subdivisions. The PLSS subdivisions contain townships, ranges, and sections. They are found in the following major land subdivisions: Old Seven Ranges, Between the Miamis (parts of which are known as the Symmes Purchase), Congress Lands East of Scioto River, Congress Lands North of Old Seven Ranges, Congress Lands West of Miami River, North and East of the First Principal Meridian, South and East of the First Principal Meridian, and the Michigan Meridian Survey. The irregular subdivisions include the Virginia Military District, the Ohio Company Purchase, the U.S. Military District, the Connecticut Western Reserve, the Twelve-Mile Square Reservation, the Two-Mile Square Reservation, the Refugee Lands, the French Grants, and the Donation Tract. This data set represents the GIS Version of the Public Land Survey System including both rectangular and non-rectangular surveys. The primary source for the data is local records and geographic control coordinates from states, counties as well as federal agencies such as the BLM, USGS and USFS. The data has been converted from source documents to digital form and transferred into a GIS format that is compliant with FGDC Cadastral Data Content Standards and Guidelines for publication. This data is optimized for data publication and sharing rather than for specific "production" or operation and maintenance. This data set includes the following: PLSS Fully Intersected (all of the PLSS feature at the atomic or smallest polygon level), PLSS Townships, First Divisions and Second Divisions (the hierarchical break down of the PLSS Rectangular surveys) PLSS Special surveys (non rectangular components of the PLSS) Meandered Water, Corners and Conflicted Areas (known areas of gaps or overlaps between Townships or state boundaries). The Entity-Attribute section of this metadata describes these components in greater detail. This data set is optimized for data publication and sharing rather than for specific "production" or operation and maintenance. ----------------------------------
Information describing the previously available dataset is provided in the rest of this metadata record for reference.
----------------------------------
The electric transmission network information consisted of transmission lines, with associated substations, designed to handle 60 Kilovolts or greater.
The Minnesota Electric Transmission Mapping Project developed two geographic information system datasets: transmission lines and substations. This metadata record describes both datasets.
In 2002, each electric utility company was mailed a request for their facility information which could be provided in either digital or paper form. The responses varied significantly in quality and quantity. In addition, the companies expressed concerns about providing the information because of security concerns. Data users were strongly encouraged to read the data quality section of this documentation.
Datasets were published in 2003, 2007, 2014, 2016, and 2021. In 2016 a few changes were made to improve the positional accuracy of lines and substations. The dataset was last updated in July 2021.
The Minnesota Electric Transmission Mapping Project was a collaborative effort between the Minnesota Department of Commerce and the Minnesota Geospatial Information Office.

Illinois is at the center of the nation’s rail network. It has a comprehensive rail network consisting of approximately 9,982 miles of railroad tracks, 7,792 of which are operated by Class I railroads – primarily BNSF Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad (UP). Class I railroads are large freight companies, Class II and Class III are small regional railroad companies. The remaining 2,190 miles of track are operated by Class III short line or regional railroads. A total of 41 railroads currently operate in Illinois. They range in size from a short one-mile interstate carrier to larger railroads extending from Illinois to the West and East Coasts, Gulf of Mexico, Canada, and Mexico. Seven are freight (Class I) carriers and 34 are regional, local, switching and terminal railroads. In all, 40 railroads are able to provide service from Illinois to every part of the United States. Chicago is the largest US rail gateway and there is another major rail center located in East St. Louis. Rail’s importance to both Chicago and the state is highlighted by the fact that over 1,300 freight, passenger and commuter trains pass through the Chicago region every day and, in 2011, Illinois ranked first in the nation in terms of rail freight volume at 490.4 million tons.Updated from IDOT Illinois Railroads MapBase source 9/19/2019
