    Description

The collection of geolocated placenames in Canada represents a consistent and comprehensive distribution of named places across Canada. Named places include large and small cities, villages, First Nations Communities, Small Hamlets etc. This data draws from public information maintained by Natural Resources Canada as part of the Canadian Geographical Names Database and public information maintained by Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada. The set of geolocated placenames is currently used for the administration of rural broadband Internet contribution programs, but is equally applicable for other mapping or modelling purposes where a comprehensive set of geolocated placenames across Canada is required.

    Description

Note: To visualize the data in the viewer, zoom into the area of interest. The National Air Photo Library (NAPL) of Natural Resources Canada archives over 6 million aerial photographs covering all of Canada, some of which date back to the 1920s. This collection includes Time Series of aerial orthophoto mosaics over a selection of major cities or targeted areas that allow the observation of various changes that occur over time in those selected regions. These mosaics are disseminated through the Data Cube Platform implemented by NRCan using geospatial big data management technologies. These technologies enable the rapid and efficient visualization of high-resolution geospatial data and allow for the rapid generation of dynamically derived products. The data is available as Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) files for direct access and as Web Map Services (WMS) or Web Coverage Services (WCS) with a temporal dimension for consumption in Web or GIS applications. The NAPL mosaics are made from the best spatial resolution available for each time period, which means that the orthophotos composing a NAPL Time Series are not necessarily coregistered. For this dataset, the spatial resolutions are: 100 cm for the year 1947 and 50 cm for the year 1977. The NAPL indexes and stores federal aerial photography for Canada, and maintains a comprehensive historical archive and public reference centre. The Earth Observation Data Management System (EODMS) online application allows clients to search and retrieve metadata for over 3 million out of 6 million air photos. The EODMS online application enables public and government users to search and order raw Government of Canada Earth Observation images and archived products managed by NRCan such as aerial photos and satellite imagery. To access air photos, you can visit the EODMS web site: https://eodms-sgdot.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/index-en.html

    Description

This dataset contains spatial and temporal data on urban parks and their usage in Toronto, Canada. It was used to examine how anonymized mobility data from Mapbox can help identify and reduce inequality in the availability and use of green spaces. The dataset consists of four files:Toronto 2021 Census.shp: A shapefile that contains census data for the park catchments in Toronto, including variables such as housing density and car ownership.greenSpaceActivityWithWeather.csv: A spreadsheet that contains the daily Mapbox activity value for each park, as well as the average temperature and total precipitation from local weather stations.Simplified Large Parks.shp: A shapefile that contains the polygons of the target parks used in the study, which are larger than 10 hectares and have more than 1000 visits per year.Park amenities.csv: A spreadsheet that contains the amenities available in each park, such as sports fields, transportation options, gardens, and playgrounds. The dataset supports a manuscript published in People and Nature titled: “Using anonymized mobility data to reduce inequality in the availability and use of urban parks”. The manuscript presents the methods and results of the analysis, as well as the implications and recommendations for urban planning and policy.

    Description

Contained within the 3rd Edition (1957) of the Atlas of Canada is a plate that shows the distribution of population in what is now Canada circa 1851, 1871, 1901, 1921 and 1941. The five maps display the boundaries of the various colonies, provinces and territories for each date. Also shown on these five maps are the locations of principal cities and settlements. These places are shown on all of the maps for reference purposes even though they may not have been in existence in the earlier years. Each map is accompanied by a pie chart providing the percentage distribution of Canadian population by province and territory corresponding to the date the map is based on. It should be noted that the pie chart entitled Percentage Distribution of Total Population, 1851, refers to the whole of what was then British North America. The name Canada in this chart refers to the province of Canada which entered confederation in 1867 as Ontario and Quebec. The other pie charts, however, show only percentage distribution of population in what was Canada at the date indicated. Three additional graphs are included on this plate and show changes in the distribution of the population of Canada from 1867 to 1951, changes in the percentage distribution of the population of Canada by provinces and territories from 1867 to 1951 and elements in the growth of the population of Canada for each ten-year period from 1891 to 1951.

    Description

Statistics Canada (StatCan) and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) have collaborated on the implementation of a set of proximity measures to services and amenities. The database contains 10 measures of proximity and a composite indicator that combines some of the proximity measures. All measures are at the dissemination block level (a block in urban areas or an area bounded by roads in rural areas), which provides the highest level of geographic resolution currently possible. Proximity measures are based on a simple gravity model that accounts for the distance between a reference dissemination block (DB) and all the DBs in which the service is located (within a given distance) and the size of the services. The measure accounts also for the presence of services within the DB of reference. In this dataset, the Proximity Measures Database has been joined to the 2016 dissemination-block polygons from Statistics Canada. A subset of the data was made for eight major cities, and the data were aggregated to the dissemination-area level to allow for the use of the ArcGIS Online enrichment tool. For all blocks in each dissemination area, the presence/absence (1 or 0) fields were aggregated using the maximum value. The proximity-index fields and "amenity dense" field were aggregated using a weighted average, using the area of each block as the weight.---Adapted from Statistics Canada, Proximity Measures Database, 2020, and Boundary Files, 2016 Census, Statistics Canada Catalogue no. 92-160-X. This does not constitute an endorsement by Statistics Canada of this product.
