    Description

Open access and open data are becoming more prominent on the global research agenda. Funders are increasingly requiring grantees to deposit their raw research data in appropriate public archives or stores in order to facilitate the validation of results and further work by other researchers.

While the rise of open access has fundamentally changed the academic publishing landscape, the policies around data are reigniting the conversation around what universities can and should be doing to protect the assets generated at their institution. The main difference between an open access and open data policy is that there is not already a precedent or status quo of how academia deals with the dissemination of research that is not in the form of a traditional ‘paper’ publication.

As governments and funders of research see the benefit of open content, the creation of recommendations, mandates and enforcement of mandates are coming thick and fast.

    Description

The stream corridor at the Big Spring Run restoration site has been identified as a substantial source of sediment and nutrients to streams due to streambank erosion and floodplain scour of legacy sediment. Three USGS streamgages were installed and water-quality monitoring began in water year 2009, prior to the legacy sediment removal from the restoration area. The legacy sediment was removed from approximately 4.6 acres within the Big Spring Run study area in the fall of 2011. Monitoring has continued in the post-restoration period. This study was conducted in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, Franklin and Marshall College, and the US Environmental Protection Agency and examines the effects of the legacy sediment removal on nutrients and sediment during the post-restoration monitoring period (Water Years 2012-2015) compared to the pre-restoration monitoring period (Water Years 2009-2011) in the Big Spring Run watershed. Description

The use of archival sources is understood to be an important tool research tool, but the problems involved have rarely been distinguished from the broader difficulties of interpreting qualitative sources. Attempts to use archival material for hypothesis testing, as opposed to description or theory development, are confounded by the large size and often opaque structure of archives; factors which lead to misinterpretations of evidence and a tendency to confirm the author's expectations. This paper discusses common features of archival materials, shows how they can compound traditional research design problems. It then proposes a set of best practices for avoiding these problems, most notably the use of strong and explicit sampling procedures. These practices are illustrated using a brief discussion of material from the National Archives of India on the 1975 Emergency.

    Description

This dataset contains data and software for the following paper: Hill, Benjamin Mako and Shaw, Aaron. (2015) “Page Protection: Another Missing Dimension of Wikipedia Research.” In Proceedings of the 11th International Symposium on Open Collaboration (OpenSym 2015). ACM Press. doi: 10.1145/2788993.2789846 This is an archival version of the data and software released with the paper. All of these data were (and, at the time of writing, continue to be) hosted at: https://communitydata.cc/wiki-proetection/ Page protection is a feature of MediaWiki software that allows administrators to restrict contributions to particular pages. For example, a page can be “protected” so that only administrators or logged-in editors with a history of good editing can edit, move, or create it. Protection might involve “full protection” where a page can only be edited by administrators (i.e., “sysops”) or “semi-protection” where a page can only be edited by accounts with a history of good edits (i.e., “autoconfirmed” users). Although largely hidden, page protection profoundly shapes activity on the site. For example, page protection is an important tool used to manage access and participation in situations where vandalism or interpersonal conflict can threaten to undermine content quality. While protection affects only a small portion of pages in English Wikipedia, many of the most highly viewed pages are protected. For example, the “Main Page” in English Wikipedia has been protected since February, 2006 and all Featured Articles are protected at the time they appear on the site’s main page. Millions of viewers may never edit Wikipedia because they never see an edit button. Despite it's widespread and influential nature, very little quantitative research on Wikipedia has taken page protection into account systematically. This page contains software and data to help Wikipedia researchers do exactly this in their work. Because a page's protection status can change over time, the snapshots of page protection data stored by Wikimedia and published by Wikimedia Foundation in as dumps is incomplete. As a result, taking protection into account involves looking at several different sources of data. Much more detail can be found in our paper Page Protection: Another Missing Dimension of Wikipedia Research. If you use this software or these data, we would appreciate if you cite the paper.

    Description

The service delivers information about lightning discharges in Sweden. Discharge data has been calculated by a lightning information computational server based on observations made by automatic lightning localisation sensors. The Lightning locating system records separate discharges (en.g. “stroke”). What we humans perceive as a lightning. “flash”) may consist of multiple discharges. Discharges with “chi square” >= 10.0 have been excluded from the data set for quality reasons. Note that these data contain some uncertainty and should therefore be used with caution for statistical processing. Data are not homogeneous over time as the lightning localisation system is constantly changing and improving. For example, sensors can be upgraded or system configuration changed. In 2014, SMHI changed the calculation server in the lightning localisation system. Archived discharge data are based on calculations with the previous calculation server (LP2000) up to and including 2014-03-25, then data is based on the current computational server (TLP). This means that, from this point in time, data are not directly comparable with older data. The information delivered is based on the UALF format (Universal ASCII Lightning Format). The 25 fields delivered for each discharge are described in tabular form in the API documentation here: https://opendata.smhi.se/apidocs/lightning/parameters.html
