    Description

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the evidence of content validity and reliability of the Brazilian version of the Nutritional Literacy Scale (NLS) after the cultural adaptation process. Methods: Psychometric study of 1,197 users of the National Health Service (Brazilian SUS). The NLS was culturally adapted to Brazilian Portuguese and six items of the original scale were modified to improve its understanding, giving rise to the Brazilian version of the scale named NLS-BR. The analysis of evidence of content validity of the NLS-BR was performed using the Item Response Theory (IRT). Results: The final version of the NLS-BR had 23 items and proved to be adequate to assess nutritional literacy in adults assisted by the Brazilian SUS. Final considerations: The NLS-BR proved to be of adequate understanding and demonstrated evidence of content validity and reliability for users of the Brazilian SUS.

    Description

Literacy in India has been increasing as more and more people receive a better education, but it is still far from all-encompassing. In 2023, the degree of literacy in India was about 77 percent, with the majority of literate Indians being men. It is estimated that the global literacy rate for people aged 15 and above is about 86 percent. How to read a literacy rateIn order to identify potential for intellectual and educational progress, the literacy rate of a country covers the level of education and skills acquired by a country’s inhabitants. Literacy is an important indicator of a country’s economic progress and the standard of living – it shows how many people have access to education. However, the standards to measure literacy cannot be universally applied. Measures to identify and define illiterate and literate inhabitants vary from country to country: In some, illiteracy is equated with no schooling at all, for example. Writings on the wallGlobally speaking, more men are able to read and write than women, and this disparity is also reflected in the literacy rate in India – with scarcity of schools and education in rural areas being one factor, and poverty another. Especially in rural areas, women and girls are often not given proper access to formal education, and even if they are, many drop out. Today, India is already being surpassed in this area by other emerging economies, like Brazil, China, and even by most other countries in the Asia-Pacific region. To catch up, India now has to offer more educational programs to its rural population, not only on how to read and write, but also on traditional gender roles and rights.

    Description

ABSTRACT. Individuals with low health literacy have less knowledge of their own health condition. Carers play a key role in older people’s activities of daily living. Objective: to evaluate the performance of carers of older people using the S-TOFHLA (Short Test of Functional Health Literacy in Adults) and to identify caregiver characteristics associated with low functional health literacy. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted. The S-TOFHLA, a sociodemographic instrument, the Mini-Mental State Exam and the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 were applied to 80 carers of older patients routinely followed by doctors from the Primary Health Care Sector of the City of Botucatu, São Paulo. The multivariate analysis used an ordinal logistic regression model with test (S-TOFHLA) scores as the dependent variable. The level of statistical significance adopted was 0.05. Results: the individuals had a mean age of 54.6 (± 11.7); 27% of the carers evaluated had inadequate levels of health literacy (S-TOFHLA ≥54). A higher proportion of individuals with low education had inadequate or marginal health literacy (p

    Description

Academic secretaries and faculty members of higher education institutions face a common problem: the abundance of questions sent by academics whose answers are found in available institutional documents. The official documents produced by Brazilian public universities are vast and disperse, which discourage students to further search for answers in such sources. In order to lessen this problem, we present FaQuAD: a novel machine reading comprehension dataset in the domain of Brazilian higher education institutions. FaQuAD follows the format of SQuAD (Stanford Question Answering Dataset) [Rajpurkar et al. 2016]. It comprises 900 questions about 249 reading passages (paragraphs), which were taken from 18 official documents of a computer science college from a Brazilian federal university and 21 Wikipedia articles related to Brazilian higher education system. As far as we know, this is the first Portuguese reading comprehension dataset in this format.

    Description

ABSTRACT Purpose: the study aims to obtain preliminary normative data for early reading and writing skills of 5-year-old children in a sample from the Northeast of Brazil. It also aims to investigate the effects of the type of school (public vs. private) and the time of assessment (beginning vs. end of the school year), and whether there were significant differences in performance, as compared to those of children from the Southeast of Brazil. Methods: 389 5-year-old children from 17 private and 12 public schools were assessed in the beginning and at the end of the school year, by using the Reading and Writing Test. Each student was individually assessed in the two times of the year. Appropriate statistical tests were applied, adopting a significance level lower than 0.05. Results: the progress in the performance of private school children was stronger than that of their peers from public schools, accentuating the existing learning gap. The comparison with normative data from the Southeast revealed that the public schools in the Northeast outperformed those in all topics of comparison. Private schools in the Southeast had a better performance at the beginning of the year, but were outperformed by those of the Northeast at the end of the year. Conclusion: the differences in performance identified in the samples suggest the need for specific norms by geographical regions of Brazil, and by type of school (public or private). The data presented in this study are preliminary and can be enlarged in future studies.
