This data set is no longer compiled by the Ministry of the Solicitor General. Data from the Police Reported Crime Severity Index. Measures changes in the level of severity of crime in Canada from year to year. In the index, all crimes are assigned a weight based on their seriousness, based on actual sentences handed down in all provinces and territories. Serious crimes are assigned high weights while less serious offences have lower weights. As a result, serious offences have a greater impact on changes in the index. The non-violent crime severity index includes traffic violations, drug violations and all Federal Statutes. Data is compared to the 2006 baseline. The data can be accessed from Statistics Canada.

The rate of incidents of violent criminal code violations in Canada increased by 51.1 incidents (+3.71 percent) in 2023 in comparison to the previous year. In total, the rate of incidents amounted to 1,427.94 incidents in 2023.

Data also includes crime rates per 100,000 people by neighbourhood based on each year's Projected Population by Environics Analytics.This data does not include occurrences that have been deemed unfounded. The definition of unfounded according to Statistics Canada is: “It has been determined through police investigation that the offence reported did not occur, nor was it attempted” (Statistics Canada, 2020).**The dataset is intended to provide communities with information regarding public safety and awareness. The data supplied to the Toronto Police Service by the reporting parties is preliminary and may not have been fully verified at the time of publishing the dataset. The location of crime occurrences have been deliberately offset to the nearest road intersection node to protect the privacy of parties involved in the occurrence. All location data must be considered as an approximate location of the occurrence and users are advised not to interpret any of these locations as related to a specific address or individual.NOTE: Due to the offset of occurrence location, the numbers by Division and Neighbourhood may not reflect the exact count of occurrences reported within these geographies. This paper examines three questions – what is an “honour killing”, in order to establish the definition used in the paper; where does it occur, looking at reported incidents in Canada; and why does it occur, examining the psychopathology involved in such criminal acts committed in the present day. Many studies have documented a perception among some families in communities outside of Canada that, in order to restore the family’s honour, a family member must kill the person who allegedly brought shame or dishonour to the family vis-à-vis the larger community. Although the term “honour-based killing” is widely recognized, it should be noted at the outset that the term is also controversial. This paper will provide a preliminary overview of the apparent incidence of honour-related killings in Canada through a summary of reported case law and media reports. Honour killings are not associated with particular religions or religious practice: they have been recorded across Christian, Jewish, Sikh, Hindu and Muslim communities. Often, honour killings are not a religiously motivated crime, but are based on personal agendas, personal ego and personal mindset. In some cases, there are psychological connotations, as studies have shown that some perpetrators have undiagnosed mental illness and psychopathic traits or disorders. Gaining a better understanding of the individual, familial, community and cultural factors at play in honour killings is important for Canadian professionals who come into contact with potential victims, accomplices or offenders. From the literature review and media reports, it is evident that honour killings do occasionally occur in Canada. So far, over the past decade in Canada there have been at least a dozen reported homicides which appear to have been honour killings.

Belleville and Lethbridge became CMAs as of the 2016 Census. In 2022, coverage for each CMA was virtually 100%, except in Toronto (90%) and Hamilton (75%).
